Harvick started seventh for the AMD at The Glen and ran in the top-10 during the early stages of the 90-lap event until he took over the lead on lap 58. The Bakersfield, Calif. native led the next 23 laps before a hard charging Tony Stewart completed a pass with nine laps-to-go. The event's 10th and final caution came out one lap later, allowing Harvick to relay a message to his crew before the restart on lap 85. "There is no way I can drive it into the corner like that," said Harvick referring to Stewart's impressive pass. "But if we can go green for more than a couple laps I believe I can pass him back."
Harvick was true to his words. With only three laps remaining, "Happy" reeled in Stewart and drove away for the finish. This victory is Harvick's second of the year and fifth top-five finish in a row. It moves him up one more position in the points standings to third, where he now sits 323 markers out of the lead.
"He (Stewart) had passed me going into the inner loop," Harvick said after the race, referring to a chicane requiring a quick right turn and then a left at the end of the backstretch. "I went to the inside to block him and he just flat out drove around me. Tony drove 200 feet further in there than I'd ever thought about. He was in the dirt smoking his tires and I said, 'Obviously, I am going to have to pick it up here.
"I knew my only shot to get him back was getting into (Turn) 1. I knew I was only going to have a couple of chances, so I took my chance, it stuck, and I went on by. It's great when you get to race your buddy for the win."

"Immediately following the race, NASCAR deemed it necessary to penalize Newman 30 seconds for running through the inner loop, putting him back to the 31st position. NASCAR's reasoning was that Newman had missed a portion of the track when he spun and then returned to the race. Since officials couldn't give Newman a normal pass-through penalty, they added 30 seconds onto his time.
Newman, Borland and other team officials argued their case to NASCAR for nearly two hours with good results. After reviewing the film, NASCAR gave Newman an eighth-place finish. "
WOW!! Ryan gets spun on the last lap and Nascar wants to penalize him for getting spun?!?!?!?!? Oh come on!!! Boris runs into the back of Ryan and then they want to penalize Ryan!!! How unfair is that? Well kids, justice was served and they gave Ryan back his finish plus one from Boris! Now Boris gets the 31st place finish that they tried to hang Ryan with. Not that I am partial or anything!~LOL~
It would seem that Nascar had an in for the Penske boys Sunday. How was Kurt suppose to not enter the pit road when the light turns red when he is 5 feet from then commit line? Make a Uee? That was so unfair, no matter who it happened to! Kurt had the strongest car of the race! Y'all would be outraged if either of these 2 incidents had happened to your driver too!

Bud Car Spins Late, Gains 16 Spots in Last 8 Laps To Finish 18th
Bud Car Spins Late, Gains 16 Spots in Last 8 Laps To Finish 18th
Fingerprint Inc., For Budweiser Racing, Press Release
Kevin Harvick passed Tony Stewart in the waning laps to win the AMD at the Glen Sunday afternoon at Watkins Glen Raceway. Stewart was second while Jamie McMurray finished third. It was an eventful day for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 8 Budweiser team, as they used pit strategy to lead a lap (gaining five bonus points) early in the race, then dropping back to 29th place with a pit stop on lap 56. Pushing hard to gain ground, Dale Jr. suffered from wheel hop under heavy braking, causing the Bud car to spin off the track on lap 74. This dropped to Dale Jr. to 36th place, the last car on the lead lap, but after restarting in 34th place with eight laps remaining, the Bud car passed a long line of cars and then avoided a series of crashes and spins on the final lap to finish 18th. The late race recovery (including passing 10 cars in the final 5 laps) allowed Dale Jr. to retain the 10th place position in points with four races remaining before the Chase for the Nextel Cup. He is now 54 points ahead of 11th place driver Kasey Kahne.
Key Moments:
Dale Jr., starting 11th, ran among the top-15 for the first 20 laps, then began gaining positions as many cars pitted. The Bud team led lap 25, then pitted for fuel and tires. A similar strategy mid-race hurt the team as a yellow flag flew before they pitted again on lap 56. Fighting to regain positions, Dale Jr. suffered from wheel-hop under heavy braking (when the tires shake violently and make braking and turning much more difficult), and spun off the track in turn one on lap 74 (of 90). The spin dropped the red No. 8 car to 36th position. The team used a late-race yellow flag to make a final stop for fresh tires on lap 81, and then climbed from 34th place to 18th in the final eight laps of the race.
Dale Jr. Quotes:
“We're lucky to get a top-20, but that's what happens when you don't give up and you fight all the way to the checkered flag. I wasn't happy with the car - I don't know what it was because we were great yesterday in practice - but we fought all day with wheel hop whenever I got hard on the brakes. I wasn't happy with our pit strategy either - we got bit by the yellow flag. But, once we spun out, the whole field was in front of me so I had to get what I could every lap. We passed a lot of cars in the last 10 laps, and then when everybody started crashing on that last lap, I just stayed out of trouble.
“I'm happy we're in the top-10. There are a lot of guys that wish they were in our position right now. I saw Kasey (Kahne, now 11th place) go off on the last lap, and I feel bad for him, but we had our own problems that we were able to come back from. I think we're in good shape in the points right now, but anything can happen, so we have to stay up on the wheel each week.”
Best Radio Chatter:
Dale Jr.'s hands were full during much of the day, traversing heavy traffic, shifting and steering on the twisting road course. After pitting under yellow, the Bud car was deep in heavy traffic when a multi-car crash took out a long list of cars on a lap 63 restart.
Tony Eury Jr. (crew chief): “We OK there?”
Steve Hmiel (spotter): “We're in good shape. Junior just made an incredible move in the 'esses' and they all wrecked behind us.”
On the ensuing restart, Dale Jr. gained several additional spots while the 24 car (J. Gordon) spun in turn one.
Hmiel: “Clear! Pretty move, June! Pretty move!”
Eury Jr: “Way to get up on the wheel there! Keep it going!”
After a spin on lap 74, Dale Jr. dropped to 36th place. Under a yellow flag with less than 10-laps to go, he asked for his status.
Dale Jr: “Where was I running when I spun out?”
Hmiel: “You were 26th or 27th.” (actually 24th)
Dale Jr: “Where am I now?”
Hmiel: “30th.”
Dale Jr.: (dejected) “Alright.
Today's Stats

Finished: 18th
Points: 10th place (no change)

Second at The Glen Sends Stewart to Seventh in Points
True Speed Communication For Joe Gibbs Racing, Press Release
Date: Aug. 13, 2006
Event: AMD at The Glen (Round 22 of 36)
Series: NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
Location: Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International (2.45-mile road course)
Start/Finish: 8th/2nd (Running, completed 90 of 90 laps)
Winner: Kevin Harvick of Richard Childress Racing
Tony Stewart drove his No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet to a solid second-place finish in Sunday's AMD at The Glen NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.
Stewart, a winner of the past two races at the 2.45-mile road course, was poised to capture his third straight victory at The Glen. He was leading Kevin Harvick with four laps to go in the 90-lap race, but Harvick, whose No. 29 Chevrolet had proven strong all day, passed Stewart on lap 87 as the two drag-raced down the frontstretch and into turn one. Harvick held onto the lead despite Stewart's presence in his rearview mirror, beating Stewart to the finish by .892 of a second.
"That was a lot of fun. We just overdrove it a little bit there and smoked the tires on the last corner and opened up the door for Kevin," said Stewart. "He did an awesome job. He hit his marks every lap. He's a good friend of mine, and it's fun racing guys you trust like that.
"Second-place is okay for us because it was a good day for our Home Depot team. We're leaving here with a smile on our face."
Stewart started eighth but quickly made his presence known, climbing to second following a restart on lap 30. Leading at the time was Kurt Busch, who appeared to have a dominant car.
Said Stewart to crew chief Greg Zipadelli on lap 39, "We're not terrible. Kurt's just really good right now."
But as fast as Busch was, he couldn't outrun bad luck.
With teams making green flag pit stops, Busch came to pit road on lap 55 just as the caution flag waved for Joe Nemechek's spin in the outer loop. NASCAR closed pit road, but Busch had already committed to driving down pit lane. The result wasn't good.
After leading twice for a race-high 38 laps, Busch was penalized by NASCAR officials for pitting too soon. He went from first to the tail end of the longest line, never to factor in the race again. He finished 19th.
"You feel for Kurt Busch today," said Stewart. "He had, if not the strongest car, one of the strongest cars, for sure. I don't know where his car and Kevin's would have stacked up there at the end, but he definitely had a car that was capable of winning the race today if it didn't get caught at the wrong time in the pits with the caution coming out right before he hit the line. That's absolutely rotten, terrible luck right there and nothing that him or his team could have done anything about."
With Busch out of the picture, the race turned into a battle between Stewart and Harvick.
"Our only shot at getting by Kevin was at the end of the backstretch," said Stewart in regard to the one and only time he got past Harvick on lap 81. "On the restart he got a little bit loose going up the hill through the esses, and that let us get a run on him. He pulled down to the inside to block. I was alright with that. I wanted to be on the outside anyway going into that corner. We got in there really good. My brakes were really good when they were cold, but as soon as we got by we were really loose and he was able to stay with us.
"I couldn't keep the rear end of the car underneath me under braking or acceleration after that. I got loose coming into (turn) seven, but didn't let him get underneath me until we got into (turn) one. About the only thing I could do was let him go and then try to get back under him, but he was really good up off the corner. As soon as he went by, our car got fairly decent again. We were just too loose to be leading the race."
The top-10 effort - Stewart's 12th of the season - bumped the two-time and reigning Nextel Cup champion up two spots in the series point standings to seventh, 21 points behind sixth-place Mark Martin and 447 markers behind series leader Jimmie Johnson.
"We went up to seventh, so that's somewhat encouraging," said Stewart, who was out of the top-10 in points just three races ago. "Any time you can move up in the points, it's a good thing. This is a race we've looked forward to. We felt like if we had a day like we did today, then we could gain points and hopefully help ourselves out. It worked according to plan."
Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammates - Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley - finished 10th and 33rd, respectively. Hamlin's finish was his best Nextel Cup road course finish, his tenth top-10 of the year and his fourth straight. Yeley finished 33rd after suffering a tire problem on the last lap.
Hamlin and Yeley now sit eighth and 27th, respectively, in points. Hamlin dropped one spot in the standings, as did Yeley.
Harvick's win in the AMD at The Glen was the seventh of his Nextel Cup career and his second this season. Finishing behind Stewart in third was Jamie McMurray, while Robby Gordon and Carl Edwards rounded-out the top-five. Boris Said, Scott Pruett, Elliott Sadler, Kyle Busch and Hamlin comprised the remainder of the top-10.
The next event on the Nextel Cup schedule is the Aug. 20 GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. The race begins at 2:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by TNT.

Reason: add title
JAMIE MCMURRAY - No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion (Finished 3rd) -
"I had to worry about Robby behind me because he was really good on restarts and when I was on the outside my car just didn't have any grip. We had brake problems yesterday and all the guys did a great job getting the brakes to work. I had good brake balance all day and that's important when you come to Watkins Glen."
STRATEGY WAS BIG FOR YOU TODAY?
"Yeah. Bob Osborne earned his keep today for sure. He made a great decision to pit there and he felt confident that we could make it on fuel. I tell you, Jack and all the guys at Yates have done a great an incredible job of getting us good fuel mileage and my motor today was unreal. When I would go up through the esses, I could out-brake guys into the inner-loop because I had a huge run on them. I had huge power today."
WHAT WOULD SALVAGE THIS YEAR FOR YOU?
"Winning for sure and, really, I thought I was better than Kevin. When I restarted second or third and I saw Kevin was leading, I really thought I could get by him and Tony was so far back, but Tony's car was better on the short runs it seemed like, but it was a good day for us."
IT WAS A GOOD DAY OVERALL.
"We certainly needed a good run and we didn't tear anything up. The guys had great pit strategy and we had a great pit stop when we came in and that's so important here."

"It was a good run for all the guys at Jim Beam. DEI guys have been doing us a good job on our engines. I know they went a little conservative with our motor, because they thought if they gave me something that ran all day, we could win the deal. It wasn't the case. We just got yarded on the straightaways. They have given us good engines all year. Good run for all the boys on the Jim Beam crew, and all of our sponsors. It was a good points day for us; definitely helped us.
"On that last restart, we just couldn't get close enough to out brake them. We a little bit of an opportunity there, tried them outside but then didn't have anything for them."
"I'm pretty happy with it. We just didn't have any brakes there at the end. We made a couple of changes from where we were a year ago and we probably needed to go. We boiled the brake fluid and just had to ride around."
