NASCAR Champion Rusty Wallace Gives Insight to the ESPN Full Circle: NASCAR Busch Ser
First Road Course of 2007 to Present New Challenges
ESPN, Inc. Press Release
After racing on the west coast at California Speedway last weekend, NASCAR teams head south to Mexico City for the NASCAR Busch Series event at Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez -- the third NASCAR event in the track’s history.
ESPN, Inc. will present ESPN Full Circle: NASCAR Busch Series from Mexico City Sunday, March 4, beginning with the pre-race NASCAR Countdown show at 1:30 p.m. ET. ESPN Full Circle will carry the race telecast live on various ESPN outlets using different coverage approaches, in addition to extensive content surrounding the race across ESPN platforms such as TV, radio, internet, and more. ESPN2, the home of the NASCAR Busch Series in 2007, will present a traditional race telecast (also available on ESPN2 HD), while ESPN will simulcast ESPN Deportes’ U.S. Hispanic Spanish-language flag-to-flag coverage. Additionally, ESPN360 will feature a live stream of the ESPN2 telecast. Friday’s one hour practice session will be aired on ESPN2 from 5-6 p.m. ET. Qualifying for the 200-mile race will be televised Saturday from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Rusty Wallace, booth analyst for ESPN’s NASCAR coverage and 1989 NASCAR Champion, who finished sixth in the inaugural NASCAR Busch Series race in Mexico City in 2005, said that NASCAR teams will experience new challenges at the track as they make adjustments for road course racing.
“This year, the challenges are simpler,” said Wallace. “The chicane at the front straightaway of the track has been removed which will make things easier on the drivers.” A chicane – which is a turn inserted into the track to slow cars down, acts as “speedbump”, Wallace explained. “A lot of guys used to get on the throttle and wreck in that area. It caused a lot of problems and now they’ve taken that out.
“The track isn’t more difficult to drive, it’s just different from Watkins Glen and Infineon Raceway,” Wallace said. “It’s not at all like any of the courses we run on. It’s totally different and takes a unique set up. The biggest factor is how you take the car and adjust the chassis. Also, different air pressure settings and shock absorbers will need to be watched because the track is so flat.”
Mexico City has an elevation of more than 7,000 feet and Wallace said that the change in altitude will also play a factor in engine and pit crew performance.
“Does it affect pit crew performance before they get out of breath? – absolutely,” said Wallace. “The engines will have less horsepower because of the high altitude and it will be tougher on crew members. Those are two factors that really stick out.
“Overall, the race has been received very well,” said Wallace. “The people in Mexico love us coming to their track.”
Wallace’s early prediction for drivers to watch include 2006 Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez race winner Denny Hamlin and popular road-course driver and ESPN NASCAR Now analyst Boris Said, who won the pole and finished second in last year’s race.
“Denny Hamlin did well last year, and I expect him to be strong again,” said Wallace. “Boris Said just completed a test session at Richmond and did extremely well there and, he’s one of the best road racers in the country. Those are the two to watch for.”
