Cool All-Star Challenge

All-Star race is this week! This one isn't about the points it's all about the money and the sheer thrill of racing that our men love so much! Another night race and I know I sure do hope that we do get to go racing at night this week. The past 2 weeks of rain outs for a night race has got me wantin' one all the more!

Wink Statistically Speaking: Hooligans

By Dan Beaver, Yahoo! Sports
May 17, 2007

Dirt track fans know this type of event by a few different names: A "Last Chance Race," the "B Main" or a "Hooligan Race," with the last probably being the most descriptive. It evokes an image of a desperate man with grit in his eyes and a chin set in determination to do whatever is necessary to make the main event.

Often a take-no-prisoners attitude is precisely what is needed to advance from the preliminary event to the big show – in this weekend's case, from the Nextel Open into the All-Star Challenge. And with more than $1 million going to the winner of the main event for the past four years, it has been well worth the while to do whatever it takes to be a part of it.

The all-star race was first run in 1985 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, and Darrell Waltrip won the caution-free exhibition by .3 seconds and blew his engine just as he crossed the finish line. The next was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where Bill Elliott led every lap but one in another caution-free event that saw him take a three-second win over Dale Earnhardt.

Only 12 cars were entered the first year and 10 in 1986, which showed a clear need to change the rules – and they've been changing ever since.

Beginning in 1987, the field was established at 20 cars and it has more or less remained the same for the past two decades. The race extends an invitation to the most recent winners who currently are active in NASCAR, with only one or two exceptions for winning car owners with new drivers.

However, a twist was added in 1987.

In the third season of the event, a last-chance hooligan race was added to allow one more driver to advance to the big show. The number of drivers allowed to advance has varied from one to five over the years, and for the most part they have not been a huge factor in determining who would win the big money. In 1987, Buddy Baker advanced to the show from the Winston Open but could only manage an 18th-place finish in the 20-car field.

The next year, Sterling Marlin came much closer when he won the Open before finishing second in the all-star race. In 1989, he qualified for his second all-star event by winning that last-chance race before finishing sixth in the big show, which was about as strong as any Open win ran in the all-star race over the next six seasons.

Michael Waltrip changed all that in 1996. Five drivers advanced into the big show that year, with Waltrip barely sneaking into the race as the fifth-place finisher in the Open. He crossed under the checkers behind Jimmy Spencer, Lake Speed, Hut Stricklin and Jeff Burton. No one paid much attention to him at the start of the all-star race, but at the end he held off two of the toughest drivers in the sport when he beat Rusty Wallace and Earnhardt to the line.

Waltrip not only was the first driver to ever win the all-star race after advancing from the Open, he was the first of the Open winners to finish better than fourth in the all-star event since Marlin crossed second in 1988. Waltrip's feat remained unparalleled until 2002 when Ryan Newman won the big show after advancing from the hooligan race. Newman's accomplishment was notable for another reason, as he became only the second rookie in to capture this all-star race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulled it off in 2000.

For his effort, Newman pocketed $785,000 and raised the hopes of every aspiring driver in the Open since. That also raised the stakes of advancing, making the final laps of these last-chance races wild affairs.

In 2005, the dollar signs dancing in Brian Vickers head clouded his judgment. Mike Bliss led most of the final laps until the flagman reached for the checkered flag. Aware that there was no way to get around Bliss, Vickers tried to go through him instead and dumped the leader less than 100 yards from the finish line to win the qualifier.

Vickers then finished third behind Mark Martin and Elliott Sadler in the all-star race, and he earned a payday of $191,950. That controversial finish was also prophetic of his first points-paying Nextel Cup victory, when he wrecked both his teammate Jimmie Johnson and Earnhardt Jr. on the final lap of last fall's Talladega race to claim his invitation to this year's all-star event.

Drivers are told to check their emotions at the gate for short-track events, but the same needs to be said before the start of the all-star race. If they bring their feelings onto the track, they are going to get hurt.

Cool Kenseth Captures All-Star Pole

Trackside Report
RacingOne
Posted Friday, May 18, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. - Matt Kenseth captured the pole for Saturday night's NEXTEL All-Star Challenge thanks in part to a lightning-quick 11.6 pit stop by his No. 17 Dewalt team.

With a mandatory four-tire, pit stop during the 3-lap qualifying run, the pit crew team know as the "Killer Bees" shined on Friday night to help Kenseth win his second career All-Star pole.

Kenseth averaged a speed of 133.442 mph, which was almost 2 mph faster than second place Jimmie Johnson's run of 131.490 mph, to win the $50,000 team prize.

Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton rounded out the top five qualifiers.

Mark Martin spun coming off pit road on his attempt, but was already going to start in the back anyways after losing an engine in practice.

In qualifying for the NEXTEL Open, Carl Edwards and David Ragan made it a Roush Racing front row after the two qualified 1-2 for the 40-lap, two segment race.

Edwards took the top spot with a lap of 28.802 seconds, 187.487 mph.

"I think it's really going to be important to start up front since it's a short race," Edwards said. "We really want to be in the All-Star race."

If Edwards can race his way into the main event and win it, he will donate his portion of the $1 million to Speedway Childrens Charities and the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Dave Blaney, David Gilliland and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top-five qualifiers.

Both David Stremme and Aric Almirola crashed in just about the same spot after both cars spun on their respective laps and backed into the Turn 2 wall.

Michael Waltrip's season woes continued as he crashed his No. 55 Toyota in Turn 4 on his up-to-speed lap.

Both Stremme and Waltrip will start at the rear of the Open field in backup cars, while Aric Almirola and Joe Gibbs Racing has opted to withdraw the No. 80 Chevrolet from the race.

The NEXTEL Open will consist of two 20-lap segments. Between segment 1 and segment 2, there will be a yellow flag during which teams can pit and may elect to change tires, add fuel and make normal chassis adjustments. Teams pitting will not retain their position on the track and will start segment 2 at the rear of the field in the order they leave pit road.

Saturday night’s pre-race festivities will begin at 7 p.m. (ET) live on SPEED.
