Track History
Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959, but the history of auto racing at Daytona goes back much farther than that. In 1936, the precursor to today's Daytona 500 was born on a course that went down 1.5 miles of highway then turned and came the same distance back up the beach.

NASA rocket launch to coincide with Pepsi 400 festivities:

Whoever sings "and the rockets red glare," on Saturday, July 7, the day of the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, will really mean it. Sometime between 4:09 and 4:36pm/et, NASA is scheduled to launch a Delta II Rocket from the Astrotech Space Operations Facility Launch Pad at Kennedy Space Center in nearby Titusville, FL. Weather permitting, those attending the Nextel Series Pepsi 400 race or in the area of the Speedway should be able to see the rocket churn toward space. The Dawn spacecraft is being prepared for launch and has gone through a series of tests including the loading on xenon for the ion propulsion system and the loading of Hydrazine, used for spacecraft control and maneuvering.(DIS PR)(6-25-2007)

Drivers differ on bump drafting strategy
By Brett Borden
Special to ESPN.com

Updated: July 4, 2007, 7:30 PM ET

As the Nextel Cup series makes its second swing through Daytona, Fla., with Saturday's Pepsi 400, get ready to hear the term bump drafting. Depending on whom you believe, bump drafting is either A) a dangerous practice that shows a lack of respect and could get someone killed, B) a positive thing that allows frustrated drivers to pass when they otherwise would be unable to, or C) something you won't have to worry about much longer either way.

Greg Biffle bumps the back of Jon Wood's car at Texas Motor Speedway last year before Wood managed to recover without wrecking.
What is this practice that elicits praise from one driver and cursing from the guy in the next garage stall?

Simply put, bump drafting is a byproduct of regular drafting, which is as much a part of Daytona as seagulls and old men with metal detectors wearing black socks on the beach. Drafting allows slower cars to stay close to faster cars because the faster cars (presumably at the front of the pack) battle the wind resistance while the slower cars are pulled forward in the ensuing vacuum. Thus you have two long lines of traffic that can only go as fast as the two front cars. Passing becomes almost impossible.

While fans in the stands love watching and hearing the freight train roar by them every minute or so, the drivers start to feel like they're merely riding a train. And drivers don't like that. So somewhere along the line, someone figured out that by tapping the rear bumper of the car in front of the pack, it gave that car a little boost, which in turn pulled the rest of the line along with him. Voila. Instant passing.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always benefit the driver being bumped. If you have seen police car chases on TV, you have probably seen a police car put the car it is chasing into a spin with a mere tap on the bumper. At the speeds cars carry around Daytona International Speedway, it doesn't take much to get someone sideways.

"I think it is positively, absolutely idiotic, period," said Kyle Petty of bump drafting a couple of years ago. "At 180 miles per hour, whether you're running in a straight line or in the corner, you shouldn't be running into people. We should be better drivers. Let's go back 10, 15, 20 years. Who heard of bump drafting? People raced each other clean."

Ricky Rudd, a contemporary of Petty's, says he saw the "need" for bump drafting develop in another series several years ago at Daytona.

"You had to bump each other to get ahead in the IROC cars," Rudd said. It's nothing but line racing. One line racing the other."

Relative newcomer Jamie McMurray actually welcomes the occasional tap from behind.

"That's the highlight of the day for the drivers because it's very boring racing," he said. "There's guys you trust, and you see them coming, and you know it's not going to be a big deal. And then there are other guys where you just hold on and hope they hit you square."

It's a fine line, one that makes such drivers as Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon demand NASCAR's intervention just as other competitors such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Elliott Sadler ask them to stay out.

"We are all going to blame it on restrictor plate racing," Sadler said. "But we have all got brake pedals in the car."

Eventually, NASCAR did get involved, first through warnings in pre-race drivers' meetings, then through the rulebook. They created No Bump Zones on the track, and limited the bracing that teams were putting on the noses of the car, making them softer so that any attempt to bump draft could cause the nose to get bent out of shape, which in an aerodynamic race can send you to the back pretty quickly. But bump drafting still exists, for now. Next year, perhaps not.

The Car of Tomorrow was designed to level the playing field in many areas. It was also designed with bump drafting in mind. The front and rear bumpers are the same height. While the COT will not be used this Saturday, it will be used full time, including all races at Daytona and Talladega, next season. Until then, get ready to hear the term bump drafting used several times. Sometimes with a smile. Sometimes in disgust.

Former 500 winners gather for special Daytona reunion
Legends promoting next year's 50th Great American Race
By Raygan Swan, NASCAR.COM
July 5, 2007
09:03 PM EDT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, Buddy Baker, David Pearson and Junior Johnson in one room ...

The legendary stories and memories exchanged between those names alone is enough to fill hundreds of pages in racing's history books.

And at least a few chapters were filled Thursday when the elite group of NASCAR's past Daytona 500 champions converged at Daytona International Speedway to celebrate next season's 50th running of the Great American Race.

"This is like one very special class reunion," said Andretti, who won the Daytona 500 in 1967. "You cherish moments like these to visit with a lot of your buddies that you've shared some time with over the years and that you looked up to and respected. I don't think we've ever really assembled together like this before. It's a special opportunity."

Longtime rivals on the track and now competing team owners in the Indy Racing League, Andretti and Foyt, sat at the same table and fielded questions about records they broke and marks they made in racing series worldwide.

Darrell Waltrip answered questions relative to past and present as the driver has gone from winning championships in the 1980s to weighing in on NASCAR news as a television commentator today.

The event was an opportunity for new-school NASCAR to meet old-school NASCAR as past Daytona 500 champions Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and most recently Kevin Harvick were also in attendance swapping stories with some of the greats.

Harvick, who in February edged Mark Martin by .020 seconds to mark the closest finish in Daytona 500 history since the advent of computer scoring, said he was overwhelmed to see so many iconic drivers in one room that span so many different eras.

"You walk up and you see Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt ... just knowing the history that you get to be around when you've won the Daytona 500 is something pretty special," he said. "And to know it is pretty special to them still is something neat."

Earnhardt, who won his Daytona 500 in 2004 in only his fifth start, said the event was an opportunity to see his favorite: Junior Johnson, a moonshine runner turned racer who ultimately became a successful car owner. He won the 1960 Daytona 500 by a margin of 23 seconds.

Johnson's mystique is a trait Earnhardt said he is drawn to.

"You just want to know more and more about him, because he don't always tell everyone the whole story, so there's a little bit of mystery about him," Earnhardt said. "But really all of them impress me, but I just like to look at them. I'm not much on walking up and talking to them. I just like shaking everyone's hands."

Though the drivers today are separated and spread out across the country and have moved on to different racing ventures, they share a common bond held only by a select group who have raced to victory off the high banks of Daytona and stood in Victory Lane of NASCAR's most famed race.

The pomp and circumstance for the past champions will continue Friday when Harvick, 1960 winner Johnson, 1970 winner Pete Hamilton, 1980 winner Buddy Baker and 1990 winner Derrike Cope participate in an honorary ceremony at Daytona USA.

Harvick will have his hands, right foot and signature immortalized in cement for the Daytona 500 Champion's Walk of Fame while former Daytona 500 champions Baker, Johnson, Cope and Hamilton will have their right foot immortalized in cement for the Goodyear Heritage of Daytona exhibit.

On Saturday, seven-time 500 winner Petty, three-time winner Allison, 1989 winner Waltrip, along with Johnson and Hamilton, will all participate in question-and-answer sessions with race fans.

"We hope our race fans enjoy these 50th Daytona 500 special activities during the Pepsi 400 weekend and make their plans to return next February for the most anticipated racing event in history," said Robin Braig, Daytona International Speedway president "These unique opportunities with these legendary drivers will give race fans a chance to look back on many of the great moments in the Great American Race."
