All-Star Race delivers what fans want: The unexpected
Exhibition event has led to several memorable moments
By Sporting News Wire Service
May 16, 2008
Expect the unexpected Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway. History tends to repeat itself in the Sprint Cup Series' annual all-star event.
At the first running of what is now called the Sprint All-Star Race, Darrell Waltrip won the race as the engine in his Junior Johnson-prepared Chevrolet expired in a huge plume of smoke. To this day, some believe Waltrip purposely detonated the engine to prevent being caught with something outside of the rules.
That unexpected moment was the first of many and include:
• The famed "Pass in the Grass," when Dale Earnhardt went to the infield racing with Bill Elliott in 1987. That may be the most defining moment in the race's 23-year history.
• Waltrip's hoping Rusty Wallace "chokes on that $200,000" after Wallace nudged Waltrip out of the lead in 1989. That changed history: Waltrip went from one of the sport's most loathed to its most popular driver overnight.
• The 1992 winner never making it to Victory Lane. The first night all-star race was punctuated by the Victory Lane celebration that didn't happen because the winner of the race, Davey Allison, spent the night in the hospital after crashing at the finish line.
Jeff Gordon, a three-time winner, has been involved in his share of bizarre moments.
He ran out of fuel just after taking the white flag in 1998 and handed the win to Mark Martin. In 2001, Gordon won the race in his backup car after a sudden downpour drenched the track on the first lap and more than a dozen cars were damaged in a massive crash.
The All-Star Race is different from other races in that it is made up of four 25-lap segments. The arrangement is a caldron for drama. Which is fine with Gordon.
"We all look forward to it because of the excitement, the prestige, the bragging rights and the million dollars that goes to the winner," Gordon said. "There are no points on the line, which means there is less pressure on the teams. But it seems there is more excitement surrounding the event. You just have fun and race hard."
Last year's race, one of the calmest, wasn't without controversy, either.
On Lap 62, brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch crashed hard in Turn 1 while racing for the lead. Older brother Kurt's comments about changing his breakfast cereal preferences -- Kellogg's was Kyle's sponsor -- are more memorable than anything winner Kevin Harvick said in Victory Lane.
The race also has a unique qualifying format: The drivers make a pit stop during their three-lap run, which puts added emphasis on the team aspect of the sport. Qualifying is Friday night.
"If we win the race," Harvick said, "we'll take all the money and split it up between the guys because they are really part of the reason why you win. They've worked just as hard for this race, if not harder, than they have at any other race. It means a lot to them, too."
The million-dollar payday for the winner always has the drivers' attention. Mix in the fact no points are on the line, and it leads to a lot of moves that drivers normally wouldn't make. Jimmie Johnson, a two-time winner, would expect nothing less.
"If you are in the right position, absolutely," he said. "If you're running around seventh or eighth, there is no need to take chances and tear up a racecar. But if you're up there racing for a million bucks, absolutely."

Busch takes All-Star pole; Sadler tops in Showdown
By Sporting News Wire Service
May 16, 2008
09:56 PM EDT
CONCORD, N.C. -- Kyle Busch found something else to win.
In a unique qualifying format that featured three laps and a green-flag pit stop, Busch outpaced Jeff Gordon by .54 seconds to win the pole for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Busch's average speed of 132.835 mph gave him a solid edge over Gordon's 132.251 mph. Busch is seeking his first victory in the annual non-points event, which will be contested in four segments of 25 laps each; Gordon hopes to win the race for a record fourth time.
Busch's No. 18 Toyota was the final car to attempt qualifying on Friday, long after Gordon had established the time to beat. Busch managed to hold his entry speed under the speed limit (45 mph) and thereby avoided a 20-second penalty (watch video).
"Being able to go out last definitely helped out," said Busch, who earlier in the day had won the pole for Friday night's Craftsman Truck Series race. "I thought I got busted speeding there. If it wasn't, it was that close -- very close."
Kurt Busch (131.539 mph) will start third, followed by Martin Truex Jr. (131.357 mph) and Greg Biffle (131.274 mph). All told, 21 cars that are guaranteed starting spots in the race made qualifying attempts; the top-two finishers from Saturday's Sprint Showdown will be added to the field, as will one driver voted in by race fans.
"I felt like I gave up a little bit getting into the pits," Gordon said. "The car felt really good on the track. We felt like Kyle would be faster than us on the track, and we knew he'd be aggressive getting to pit road."
In an earlier conventional qualifying session for the Sprint Showdown, Elliott Sadler (185.014 mph) put his No. 19 Dodge on the pole for the 40-lap event, edging Brian Vickers (184.786 mph).
"Track position is everything," said Sadler, who finished second in the 2005 All-Star race but is not locked into the field this year. "We definitely want to race our way in. That would mean a lot to me, and it's something the team really needs."
Notes:Jimmie Johnson's qualifying run for the All-Star Race was disallowed, because the crew secured the fifth lug nut (which had been missing) to the left-front wheel when the No. 48 Chevy was outside the pit box. He'll start 21st. ... A 5-second penalty for a loose lug nut negated an otherwise excellent run by Kevin Harvick. ... Two other top cars will start near the rear of the field, including the No. 99 Ford of Carl Edwards (penalized for entering pit road too fast) and the No. 11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin (who compounded a too-fast entry by spinning the car on pit road). ... Dale Jarrett qualified 18th after suffering a 5-second penalty for a loose lug nut.

Bowyer, Montoya on their first quest for the million
Drivers split on whether money is inspiration for victory
By Bill Kimm, NASCAR.COM
May 16, 2008
CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR's annual All-Star event is an opportunity for the best drivers in the sport to show their stuff and put it all on the line for a million bucks. This year's race features elite names like Earnhardt, Gordon, Johnson, Stewart and 17 other familiar faces in Saturday's exhibition.
There are two drivers -- Clint Bowyer and Juan Montoya -- making their All-Star debut, and both come in running the best they have in their short Cup Series careers.
Bowyer, currently fifth in the point standings, is riding a streak of seven top-10s in the last eight races, including a second at Phoenix and a win at Richmond. Red-hot behind the wheel, Bowyer is ready to strap in and run for a million.
"No points, go for broke -- it's all about the drive, the trophy and the cash," Bowyer said with a smile. "It's a fun way of racing. This is something we don't get a chance to do very often and I'm excited about it."
Montoya is an all-star in just his second season behind the wheel due to his win at Sonoma last season. But 2008 has been one of consistency thanks to eight top-20 finishes in the last 10 races, including a strong second-place run at Talladega. Montoya isn't looking to change what's working and will head into the All-Star Race just like any other Cup event.
"We'll just take it like any other weekend," Montoya said. "Make the car as fast as we can and run and see what happens."
While he is thrilled to be in the big show, Bowyer recognizes this is an opportunity for the entire team to shine. He wants to give his No. 07 Richard Childress Racing team an All-Star victory.
"This is a big week, it's a neat week coming back home for everybody," Bowyer said. "[The team] gets the Pit Crew Challenge and it puts those guys in the spotlight. People at home, they see us drivers all the time, they don't see those guys and what they go through, what they do, and I was really glad that they were a part of that.
"It's really a neat week. The All-Star event, we get to bring all the crew out during the driver intros, everybody gets a little place in the spotlight this week. Obviously [there's] a big prize at the end of the day and hopefully we'll be on top."
Neither Bowyer nor Montoya have had success in the Sprint Showdown event that allows the top two drivers to transfer into the All-Star Race. In 2006, Bowyer finished 13th, and last season, he finished a distant sixth while Montoya crashed on the first lap. Needless to say, Bowyer is ecstatic he is avoiding the Sprint Showdown this season.
"That qualifying race is always a wild one and it's nice to not be a part of it," he said with a laugh.
Believe it or not, Montoya might not mind racing in both races Saturday. His focus isn't on the money -- he's won big paydays before. It's on the competition.
"I didn't have a lot of culture about the Daytona 500 and I have none for this, but its cool, it's still a race for a million bucks," Montoya said. "It's like when I went to Indy and I won there, I won like $1.5-1.7 million dollars and that wasn't even for the championship so that was pretty sweet. I don't think you do it for the million bucks, I think you do it to beat everybody else."
Bowyer might disagree with Montoya on that one. When asked whether he would race differently on Saturday night knowing no points were involved in the four-segment, 100-lap event, he was very blunt: "A million bucks bub, that's a lot of cash."

Fans' vote puts Kahne into Sprint All-Star Race at LMS
By NASCAR.COM
May 17, 2008

The votes are in and the ballots have been counted: It's Kasey Kahne.
Kahne was voted into Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race by the fans. He will start 24th.
This is the fifth year the fans voted in the final driver in the All-Star Race, and the first year Kahne received the popular vote.
~LOL~ I bet it was our own kkfan who voted Kasey Kahne in!
