taking a year off is a bad idea unless you are independently wealthy or planning to live with mom and dad for the rest of your life... going back to school is tough and the later you wait the harder it is!!!! been there done that... I went to a community college right out of high school for the summer... taking two classes that were gonna transfer... what they called university studies classes... then right into the 4 yr program.. and dummy me.. could not get along with one of the professors ... imagine that...lol anyhow.. had to have his class to get degree.. so I changed majors... so enter the 5 yr plan.. well after changing from puter programming to biology... then the deeper in chemistry I got... the more I wanted to go into chemistry... chemistry led to physics.. sooooooo figure out what You want to do.. and stick with it! before my last year I got a phone call, and doctors told my mom that my dad had 6 months to 3 yrs to live.. so I did not finish the degree... went back home.. got a job.. and the doctors were wrong! my dad still is alive today... soooo My mistake... pissed it away.. after a few yrs working in a factory, getting married getting 2 kids.. I took a apprenticeship... and with it ...back to school.. not easy, but I got back into it and got the 2 yr degree... thought why not finish the 4 yr degree now... lemme tell ya.. it is not easy to go back to a 4 yr program ( I only needed 2 credit hours of B work) the professor, well he did not want me there, and I did not have boobs... so I ended up dropping out of his class, disgusted with it all... I have spent 18 yrs as a tool and die maker.. not regretting that, I have learned much at this trade.. But I would not trade it for the yrs I spent in college, there is much to learn about yourself there, not just the classwork, or the beer parties, you are on your own and learn how to do that.. make mistakes, and hopefully learn from them. If you wait... the saying is " he who hesitates is lost." today YOU will need at least a 2 yr degree to get any job work having... employers don't care what your degree is in, just that you have what it takes to finish it! I work at a tire manufacturer, not goodyear ... we have several guys with 4 yr degrees building tires, and one with a masters... do they need it to build tires...no... but they have it. jobs are gonna get hard to find, credit will be hard to get, you need to get into school and get that degree!!!!! asap! go back for continued education throughout life... do it for yourself! nothing wrong with trade schools, but you typecast yourself, say a plumber ... you will be a plumber your whole life.. just hard to change trades.. I make pretty good money doing tool and die, but I am trapped at it.. If I change jobs, I have to take a pretty substantial pay cut... got divorced, paying child support... with how the court systems work, if I changed jobs, and took a pay cut... It could be 8 months before they would reduce the support ... so making less, paying out the same... a no win situation.. trapped.. and advancement to say engineering? nah, they hire kids fresh out of school for that.. and I gotta train them ??? lol just don't seem right... the thing is... they don't want me out of my job... they would have to replace me... and that is hard to do when you have that much job experience... I really encourage all younger, fresh out of high schoolers.. get into college, trade schools, something, apprenticeships, anything ... If you wait, someone fresh out of school will get it over you! they want go getters... You can start college in general studies til you find something you want to do.. well off the soapbox choose wisely!!!!! life don't hand out redos!!!
