Wood Brothers Racing officials say NASCAR legend Bill Elliott will be inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.
The hall of fame honors Atlanta's sports heroes. Prior inductees include baseball player Hank Aaron, boxer Evander Holyfield and gymnast Dominique Wilkins.
Elliott, a native of Dawsonville, Ga., whose nickname is "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville," will fly to Atlanta from Dover after completing the final Sprint Cup Series practice for Sunday's Best Buy 400 at Dover International Speedway. He'll attend the induction ceremony in Atlanta and then return to Dover to compete in Sunday's race for Wood Brothers Racing.
"Bill is a true champion and a true family friend," Wood Brothers Racing co-owner Eddie Wood said in a news release. "It's no wonder he has been inducted to multiple halls of fame and voted NASCAR's most popular driver 16 times. We are blessed to have a person like Bill working with us."
Elliott has won 44 Cup races and was the 1988 series champion.
