Awesome Bill A Hall Of Famer
Bill Elliott was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame last Wednesday during a ceremony in Detroit, ahead of this weekend's race at Michigan International Speedway.
"It would have to be way up there," said Elliott of the honor. "Everything, to me is a building block. You go through your career and you do different things, and now I look back and it just seemed like yesterday you were starting all of this building, and now you look back at all the things that you accomplished and all the things you did and, really, how hard it was to do at that point in time.
"In some ways it was easy and in some ways it was very difficult, but it's still a special part. It's time to reflect back on all the people that supported you, helped you and did all the things that they sacrificed to help you, and that's what it means to you today."
Elliott won 44 Cup races, including the 1985 and 1987 Daytona 500s. He was the 1988 Nextel Cup champion.
This year, he is competing for The Wood Brothers.
"I just wish my mother and dad, and Harry Melling were there," Elliott said. "A lot of people that were instrumental in helping me get to the point that I was at to be inducted, because it's not all about me. It's all about everyone that was involved, that helped, that made a contribution to put me in there.
"It isn't all about me, but it is a very special honor to be in that Hall of Fame."
