« Don’t move banquet Harvick enjoys celebration of season
by Lee Montgomery
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Kevin Harvick’s nickname is “Happy,” and that description was perfect for Friday night’s NASCAR Busch Series Awards Banquet.
For one night, there was no talk about Buschwackers, only a celebration for Harvick’s spectacular season. The rest of the drivers in the top 10 were there, too – minus Greg Bifle and Reed Sorenson – and they all thrived in the loose atmosphere.
Johnny Sauter joked about posing with a Dunkin Donut, in a mock comparison to Carl Edwards’ shirtless “ESPN The Magazine” cover earlier this year. Kyle Busch took some more ribbing for flubbing his girlfriend’s name at the Nextel Cup awards ceremony last week, and he insisted Erica Dewey was fine with the goof. Uh, huh.
Paul Menard talked about ice racing in Wisconsin, saying he brought Robby Gordon to race one time. And Menard waved at Gordon as he lapped Gordon. J.J. Yeley noted that Harvick’s worst finish of the season was “because of me,” when Harvick finished 19th at Milwaukee – off Yeley’s bumper. Denny Hamlin said he learned his road-racing skills “running from the cops” in his hometown of Chesterfield, Va.
Clint Bowyer stopped in mid-sentence when he noticed a clip of his post-race celebration at Dover. Bowyer’s car was sliding down the bank with Bowyer standing on the drivers door. “I promise it was in gear,” he said. “It wasn’t in the right gear.”
Carl Edwards played with the night’s musical entertainment, Robert Randolph and The Family Band. “This is for you, Kevin,” Edwards said. Harvick simply relished the entire night, humbly accepting all the adulation while rightfully citing all the people who helped him have one of the greatest seasons in Busch Series history.
A Happy night, indeed.
