Nationwide points leader Bowyer not planning to scale back focus anytime soon

DOVER, Del. – Richard Childress Racing's Clint Bowyer is pleased with the opening to his NASCAR season. And why wouldn't he be?
Bowyer is off to a stellar start. He's won a Sprint Cup Series race and is fifth in those points standings. He's won a race and leads the standings in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
So he admits that things are going pretty well at this point.
"Yeah, absolutely. You always want to be better and you look to be better, but a lead in the Nationwide Series and fifth in points in the Cup series, inside the Chase [For The NASCAR Sprint Cup], life could be a lot worse," he said Friday at Dover International Speedway. "So far, so good. We've had the consistency. Hopefully, we can keep that through the stretch here on in to the Chase. We all know the Chase is the main goal."
Bowyer, in his third full season of Cup competition, is preparing to hit a stretch of the season where the Cup and Nationwide races are run at different tracks. He'll be traveling a little more, but he's done this double duty before and knows what he faces. This time, he has more of an advantage because he's off to such a strong start in the Cup ranks and isn't trying to gain ground on the competition.
Still, he's not taking his points position for granted, nor is he counting on just easing into the Chase field.
"I know how this sport can change on you and how fast it can change, and we've got to stay focused, 100 percent, on both cars," he said.
Part of that involves a significant amount of testing, perhaps too much, by Bowyer's standards.
The Cup teams spent two days testing at Pocono Raceway earlier this week, a session sandwiched between the late-night Coca-Cola 600 last Sunday and this weekend's Best Buy 400 at Dover.
Still, while Bowyer may not be a huge fan of the recent schedule, he certainly understands the importance of keeping pace with the competition – especially when there are still 14 races to go before the Chase field is set.
"It's been a long month. It's been a long season already through this testing, for everybody, not only the drivers but the pit crews and things," he said. "It's probably got us all stretched a little too thin right now, but it is what it is, and you've got to keep up with the Joneses, so to speak, and that's what we're doing right now."
