Cool Clint Bowyer Subway 500 NNCS Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing, Press Release

NOTES:

This Week’s Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet at Martinsville Speedway …
Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 207 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) NASCAR Cup Series stable. This is a brand new Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet Impala SS.

Peaking at the Right Time …

In the five races since the Chase for the NASCAR Cup began (New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas, Talladega and Charlotte), Bowyer has earned one pole, one win, two second-place finishes, one 11th and one 12th-place effort. With the exception of Dover, Bowyer recorded career-best finishes at four of the five stops. Of the 12 drivers in the Chase, Bowyer ranks first in the Driver Rating (109.1) and Average Running Position (11.482) categories. He has led 21 percent of the laps contested over that period. Over those same five races, Bowyer has logged a compelling 5.6 average finish and is second only to point leader Jeff Gordon (4.0) in that category.

Hoping to Bring up the Average …

In three NASCAR Cup Series starts at Martinsville Speedway, Bowyer has an 11th-place finish to call a career best. The Emporia, Kan., native has a 33.3 starting average and an 18.7 average finish at the .526-mile paper clip-shaped oval. In his lone NASCAR Busch Series start at the south-central Virginia track last July, Bowyer won the pole and finished second to teammate Kevin Harvick.

What a Difference a Year Makes …

Over the season’s first 31 races, Bowyer has recorded one win, two poles, five top-five and 15 top-10 finishes. He has a 16.4 starting average and, following his runner-up finish last weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, improved his finishing average to 13.4. He has completed 8,716 of 8,834 total laps contested (98.66 percent) and sits third in the NASCAR Cup Series championship point standings, just 10 points behind second-place Jimmie Johnson. Heading into the division’s second stop at Martinsville last season, Bowyer had a 20.4 starting average, a 19.7 average finish and was 17th in points. He had three top fives and nine top 10s at this point last year.
Speaking of Stats …

Bowyer is the NASCAR Cup Series’ fifth-best Closer – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved over the last 10 percent of each race. Bowyer has gained an average of 1.484 spots over the season’s first 31 races and has improved a total of 46 positions over the closing 10 percent of those same races. The Emporia, Kan., native has also logged 5,277 of the 8,834 laps completed this season (59.7 percent) running in the top 15. Bowyer is ranked 11th in NASCAR’s Average Running Position category (15.13) and is also 10th in the Driver Rating category (88.4). The Driver Rating is a formula that combines the following categories: wins, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The Driver Rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.

RCR at Martinsville …

In 97 previous NASCAR Cup Series starts at Martinsville, RCR has earned three poles and posted six wins between Ricky Rudd and Dale Earnhardt. Additionally, team owner Richard Childress has earned 22 top-five and 37 top-10 finishes dating back to April 10, 1972. Childress, a former driver in NASCAR’s top division, contributed four of those top 10s from 1976-1978.

Testing One, Two, Three, Testing …

On Wednesday, October 17, Bowyer and the Jack Daniel’s racing team will test at Gateway International Raceway, near St. Louis, in preparation for next month’s Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Keep on Rolling …

Bowyer has yet to record a DNF (did not finish) in 2007. He and fellow RCR teammate Kevin Harvick are the only two Chase drivers to have finished every race this season. Bowyer has been running at the end of every race dating back to Bristol last August, a streak of 44 races.

More Reps …

In addition to his duties in the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet, Bowyer will also race the Kevin Harvick Inc.-owned No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado in this weekend’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race. In six previous NCTS starts, Bowyer has one win, two top-five and three top-10 finishes. In his most recent NCTS race driving for KHI, Bowyer started 32nd, was collected in a multi-truck incident and ultimately credited with a 35th-place finish in the New Hampshire 200. The Kroger 200 from Martinsville Speedway will be televised on SPEED Saturday, October 20 beginning at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and broadcast worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying will be televised live on SPEED the same day at 11 a.m. EDT.

Catch the Action …

The Subway 500 from Martinsville Speedway will take the green flag Sunday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m. EDT. The race will be televised live on ABC beginning at 1 p.m. EDT. The race will also be broadcast worldwide on MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for round six of NASCAR’s 10-race playoffs will be televised live on ESPN2 Friday, October 19 at 3:30 p.m. EDT. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will provide qualifying updates live.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTES

Did the Car of Tomorrow change the race at Martinsville?

“You still see the same guys who have won or run well at Martinsville do the same thing. We’ve picked up our Car of Tomorrow program big time so I think we have the potential to be a threat. A lot of people struggled with the handling of the car in April but everyone has picked up a bunch since then. Tension is going to be high when we get to Martinsville with the Chase as close as it is. Anything can happen so we’re going to have to be careful. Martinsville is still going to be the same so you’ll have some beating and banging and a little bit of rubbing.”

With the way the bumpers line up on the new car, it doesn’t seem like it’s as easy to move someone out of the way anymore.

“That’s what I like about the new car. With the old car, when you’d get into the back of someone, it would lift their rear tires off the ground. That’s why you’d see people spin out a lot of times. Now, you just kind of shove them forward and push them through the corner.”

Everyone talked about Talladega being the wild card in the Chase. Do you think Martinsville is another one?

“It could be. It’s so small that if something happens in front of you there’s just no getting around it. We finished 11th at Martinsville in the spring and we need to get more out of it this time. We knew we’d have to pick up our program and finish better at all these race tracks and I think we can go there this weekend and do better than we’ve done in the past.”

DMF Communications For Checkers®/Rally’s® Double Drive-Thru Challenge, Press Release

Clint Bowyer’s No. 07 over-the-wall crew claimed the Checkers®/Rally’s® Double Drive-Thru Challenge win in Saturday night’s Bank of America® 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
Bowyer’s crew spent 345.178 seconds on pit road on its way to a runner-up finish in the Nextel Cup event.

“We’re all excited to win the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive Thru Challenge,” said crew chief Gil Martin. “Mr. Jack’s Crew has been the model of consistency this year and we had another good night at Charlotte. We knew when the Chase started that our entire team would have to step up in a big way and this award definitely illustrates this team’s ability to answer that call.”

Checkers/Rally’s will award the Richard Childress Racing team with an $11,000 check for winning the weekly competition. An additional $111,150 prize will be presented to the over-the-wall crew with the most wins at the completion of the 36-race Nextel Cup schedule.

Bowyer’s No. 07 over-the-wall crew consists of: Carey Wimbish (jackman), Dail Long (front-tire carrier), Shane Westerberg (front-tire changer), Dustin Long (rear-tire carrier), Jake Lind (rear-tire changer), Mike Morrison (gasman), Clint "Ratto" Almquist (catch can) and Troy Welty (eighth man).

With just five races remaining in the Nextel Cup season, Mark Martin’s No. 01 crew and Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 crew are currently tied for the lead in the season-long competition with four wins each.

To win, teams are required to finish on the lead lap while spending the least amount of time on pit road. Checkers/Rally’s is in its third season as title sponsor for the Pit Crew Challenge.

Cool Clint Bowyer Pep Boys Auto 500 NNCS Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing, Press Release

NOTES:

This Week’s Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet at Atlanta Motor Speedway …
Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 166 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. This is the same Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Bowyer drove to a second-place finish two races ago at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Peaking at the Right Time …

In the six races since the Chase for the NASCAR Cup began (New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas, Talladega, Charlotte and Martinsville), Bowyer has earned one pole, one win, three top-five and four top-10 finishes. Over the course of those same six races, Bowyer has yet to finish worse than 12th. With the exception of Dover, Bowyer recorded career-best finishes at five of the six stops. Of the 12 drivers in the Chase, Bowyer ranks first in the Percentage of Laps Led category (15.6). He is third in the Driver Rating (103.7) and fourth in the Average Running Position (12.453) categories. Over those same six races, Bowyer has logged a compelling 6.2 average finish and is second only to points leader Jeff Gordon (3.8) in that category.

Tale of the Tape …

In three NASCAR Cup Series starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS), Bowyer has a sixth-place finish to call a career best. The Emporia, Kan., native has a 16.3 starting average and a 19.3 average finish at the suburban Atlanta race course. In four NASCAR Busch Series starts at AMS, Bowyer also calls a sixth-place effort (3/18/07) a career best.

What a Difference a Year Makes …

Over the season’s first 32 races, Bowyer has recorded one win, two poles, five top-five and 16 top-10 finishes. He has a 16.6 starting average and, following his ninth-place run last weekend at Martinsville, improved his finishing average to 13.2. He has completed 9,222 of 9,340 total laps contested (98.74 percent) and sits third in the NASCAR Cup Series championship point standings, 53 points behind second-place Jimmie Johnson and 115 behind Gordon. Heading into the division’s second stop at AMS last season, Bowyer had a 20.9 starting average, a 19.8 average finish and was 18th in points. He had three top fives and nine top 10s at this point last year.

Speaking of Stats …

Bowyer is the NASCAR Cup Series’ fifth-best Closer – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved over the last 10 percent of each race. Bowyer has gained an average of 1.563 spots over the season’s first 32 races and has improved a total of 50 positions over the closing 10 percent of those same races. The Emporia, Kan., native has also logged 5,471 of the 9,340 laps completed this season (58.6 percent) running in the top 15. Bowyer is ranked 11th in NASCAR’s Average Running Position category (15.19) and is also 10th in the Driver Rating category (88.0).

Keep on Rolling …

Bowyer has yet to record a DNF (did not finish) in 2007. He and fellow RCR teammate Kevin Harvick are the only two Chase drivers to have finished every race this season. Bowyer has been running at the end of every race dating back to Bristol last August, a streak of 45 races.

Staying After School …

Bowyer and the Jack Daniel’s racing team will stay in Atlanta on Monday and Tuesday following the Pep Boys Auto 500 to participate in the final NASCAR Cup Series test of the season. The Atlanta test replaces the two-day Car of Tomorrow (COT) test that was originally scheduled for May 14-15 at Dover International Speedway.

RCR in the ATL …

In 96 races at AMS, RCR has earned four poles and nine wins including Harvick’s emotional victory in the Cracker Barrel 500 on March 11, 2001. Prior to that, Dale Earnhardt won eight times at the ultra-fast Hampton, Ga., track. Additionally, RCR boasts 24 top-five and 40 top-10 finishes at AMS. Childress, a former driver on NASCAR’s senior circuit, recorded his best finish at Atlanta with a ninth-place effort in the Atlanta Journal 500 on Nov. 2, 1980.
A Little Taste of Lynchburg …

Bowyer will appear at the Jack Daniel’s Experience Sunday, October 28 from 10:50 a.m. – 11:05 a.m. The Jack Daniel’s Experience is a 42-foot tractor- trailer filled with artifacts, state-of-the art video monitors, sound system and graphics to give race fans a taste of Lynchburg and the Distillery. The Jack Daniel’s Experience will be located in the display area, outside the front straightaway, and will be open on Friday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Catch the Action …

Live coverage of the Pep Boys Auto 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway will take the green flag Sunday, October 28 beginning at 1 p.m. EDT. The race will also be broadcast worldwide on the Performance Racing Network (PRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for round seven of NASCAR’s 10-race playoffs will be televised live on ESPN2 Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m. EDT. PRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will provide qualifying updates live.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTES

Would you be happy if you could duplicate the sixth-place run you had at Atlanta in the spring?

“Atlanta has been a good track for us. We’ve run well there in the past. I’ve been saying all along that I think we can pick up on all of our finishes from the spring races at these tracks. Hopefully, we’ll get out of there with a top five and stay in the hunt for this thing.”

Do you enjoy that sort of speed sensation that Atlanta gives?

“I might be a little more comfortable than some having a car sideways, driving it off the right-rear tire and being loose. Atlanta is certainly a track where you have to do that. You have to dirt track it a little bit. It’s not dirt – don’t get me wrong but it’s a lot closer to what I grew up doing than maybe my teammate Kevin Harvick or someone like Matt Kenseth who came up racing on asphalt short tracks and were able to pull hard on the wheel.”
Do you feel like your dirt background gives you a competitive advantage at Atlanta?

“Atlanta is a slick race track. You have to be able to run the car free. I’m not singling those guys out like they can’t do it because they’ve outrun me at Atlanta before. Harvick got his first win at Atlanta and Kenseth can win anywhere. I just think Atlanta is a place where my background lends itself to being competitive maybe more so than some other race tracks.”
Where do you like to run at Atlanta?

“I’m kind of a catfish. I like to run on the bottom but that’s what’s neat about Atlanta. If it’s not working on the bottom you can move up to the top. I’ve run in the middle, on the bottom and the top. I’ve run all over the place at Atlanta.”

Cool Clint Bowyer Dickies 500 NNCS Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing, Press Release

NOTES:

This Week’s Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet at Texas Motor Speedway …
Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 166 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. This is the same Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Bowyer drove to a sixth-place finish last weekend in Atlanta and to a second-place finish three races ago at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Keep on Plugging …

In the seven races since the Chase for the NASCAR Cup began (New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas, Talladega, Charlotte, Martinsville and Atlanta), Bowyer has earned one pole, his first career win, three top-five and five top-10 finishes. Over the course of those same seven events, Bowyer has yet to finish worse than 12th. With the exception of Dover, the sophomore driver has either tied or recorded career-best finishes at six of the seven stops. Of the 12 drivers in the Chase, Bowyer ranks first in the Percentage of Laps Led category (13.1). He is third in the Driver Rating (103.7) and fourth in the Average Running Position (12.453) categories. Bowyer has logged a compelling 6.1 average finish in the seven Chase races, and only trails to leader Jeff Gordon (4.3) and Jimmie Johnson (5.9) in that category.

Texas Tale …

In three NASCAR Cup Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS), Bowyer has a fifth-place finish to call a career best. The Emporia, Kan., native has an 11th-place starting average and a 13.3 average finish at the ultra-fast Fort Worth race course. Bowyer’s best NASCAR Busch Series finish came in his second start at TMS (4/15/05) when he logged a sixth-place effort behind the wheel of RCR’s No. 2 entry.

What a Difference a Year Makes …

Over the season’s first 33 races, Bowyer has recorded one win, two poles, five top-five and 17 top-10 finishes. He has a 16.8 starting average and, following his sixth-place run last weekend at Atlanta, improved his finishing average to 13.0. He has completed 9,551 of 9,669 total laps contested (98.77 percent) and sits third in the NASCAR Cup Series championship point standings, 102 points behind Johnson and 111 behind Gordon. Heading into the division’s second stop at TMS last season, Bowyer had a 20.8 starting average, a 20th-place average finish and was 18th in points. He had three top fives and nine top 10s at this point during his rookie year.

Speaking of Stats …

Bowyer is the NASCAR Cup Series’ second-best Closer – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved over the last 10 percent of each race. Bowyer has gained an average of 1.758 spots over the season’s first 33 races and has improved a total of 58 positions over the closing 10 percent of those same races. He has also logged 5,618 of the 9,669 laps completed this season (58.1 percent) running in the top 15. Bowyer is ranked 11th in NASCAR’s Average Running Position category (15.31) and is also 10th in the Driver Rating category (87.8).

Keep on Rolling …

Bowyer has yet to record a DNF (did not finish) in 2007. He and fellow RCR teammate Kevin Harvick are the only two Chase drivers to have finished every race this season. Bowyer has been running at the end of every race dating back to Bristol last August, a streak of 46 races.
RCR at TMS …

In 34 starts at TMS, dating back to 1997, RCR has recorded one win, four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes with drivers Jeff Burton, Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt, Harvick and Jeff Green. Prior to TMS’s inaugural season, Childress, a former driver in NASCAR’s top division, earned a pair of top 10s while he was still behind the wheel at the now defunct Texas World Speedway in College Station.

A Little Taste of Lynchburg …

Bowyer will appear at the Jack Daniel’s Experience Sunday, November 4 from 11:20 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. The Jack Daniel’s Experience is a 42-foot tractor- trailer filled with artifacts, state-of-the art video monitors, sound system and graphics to give race fans a taste of Lynchburg and the Distillery. The Jack Daniel’s Experience will be located in the speedway’s display area, outside the front straightaway, and will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Texas Two-Step …

In addition to his duties behind the wheel of the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet, Bowyer returns to the seat of the No. 2 BB&T Chevy for this weekend’s NASCAR Busch Series event at TMS. Live coverage of the O’Reilly Challenge will be televised live on ESPN2 Saturday, November 3 beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The race will also be broadcast live on the Performance Racing Network (PRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 33rd of 35 races on the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series schedule will be televised live on SPEED Friday, November 2 at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

Catch the Action …

Live coverage of the Dickies 500 from Texas Motor Speedway begins Sunday, November 4 at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The event will also be broadcast live on PRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the eighth round in the Chase for the NASCAR Cup will take the green-flag on Friday, November 2 at 4:40 p.m. EDT and will be telecast live on ESPN2. There are three races to go, you’re 111 points out of the lead but you made up a little bit of ground last week in Atlanta. Are you still in the mix for the championship?

“Absolutely. If Jeff (Gordon) or Jimmie (Johnson) have one bad race, we could be right there. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing. I’m really proud of everyone on the Jack Daniel’s team and things have definitely been going our way. We gained a few points on those guys in Atlanta but we struggled the whole race. We got lucky and ended up with a decent finish and that’s something that we’ve gotten a lot better at. Historically, we’ll run good and end up with a bad finish. This time, we ran poorly and had a good finish and that’s been the biggest difference in our program. I was really proud of our effort last weekend in Atlanta.”

You just keep hanging around the top two guys while everyone else seems to be fading. Do you feel like something good has to happen over the next three weeks?

“I sure hope so. We just have to race as hard as we can. I’m really looking forward to Phoenix coming up next week. We’re going to take the same car that we won with at New Hampshire so I’ve got a lot of confidence in that car and I usually run well at Phoenix. We run pretty well at all three of these tracks so there’s no reason not to be optimistic.”
How do you feel about Texas in particular? A top-five finish would keep things interesting.

“A top five is the number one goal but it seems like we need to win to compete with the guys we’re racing for a championship. We’re improving on our best finishes at just about all of these tracks since the Chase started so if we can do that in Texas this weekend, that’ll be a good day for us.”
What kind of unique challenges does Texas present?

“We’ll see a lot of long green-flag runs. We’ll have to focus on keeping the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet freed up enough so it will stay consistent over the course of a long run. Pit strategy usually comes into play too so it takes a total team effort to win at a place like Texas.”
