The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series has been nothing if not eclectic this season, from the blinding speed of young Kyle "Rowdy" Busch and the relentless pursuit of another championship by Ron Hornaday Jr. to surprise first-time winners two weeks in a row in Matt Crafton and Donny Lia.
Put bluntly, the Trucks — and their drivers — have continued to deliver exciting racing this season. And there's sure to be plenty more hard racing on tap Friday during the AAA 200 at Dover International Speedway, round No. 8 of the 25-race 2008 NCTS schedule. With a concrete racing surface and 24 degree banking in the corners, the Monster Mile has been accurately described as "Bristol on steroids," a fast, action-filled track where trouble is never far away.
And Bristol is a place where Hornaday and his all-conquering No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado never seem to be far from the front. Hornaday, the defending series champ, is also the defending Dover winner, having led 91 laps to capture the victory here last season. Two years earlier, he led 134 laps in his Kevin Harvick Inc.-owned entry before finishing fourth.
If anyone else wants to win the AAA 200, he'll have to race the track and he'll have to race Hornaday, too.
"Dover can be tough on a driver," says Hornaday, who has led more laps at Dover than any other driver in the race and has the best finishing average as well. "Last year, we were able to get out in front and win the race. We have some good trucks here at KHI and I think we'll be good again this year at Dover."
Hornaday's toughest competition at Dover may well be Busch, who'll be back behind the wheel of Billy Ballew's No. 51 Miccosukee Resorts Toyota Tundra as part of a triple-header NASCAR Sprint Cup/Nationwide/Truck weekend at Dover. Busch won this race in 2005 and led 78 laps last year and 85 in 2006. Without question, he'll be tough for Hornaday to come to grips with.
"I've won at Dover before in the Truck Series but they didn't have the monster trophy there yet, so I didn't get to take home that one," says Busch. "But it'd be pretty cool. I think we've got a great shot in all three series to try and take home one and we'll see how it goes. … The trucks are definitely going to be a good show."
The show, of course, is likely to be much more than just a Hornaday-Busch or Busch-Hornaday parade. David Starr comes into the AAA 200 as a man on a mission, having been punted out of the lead on the last lap of the Ohio 250 last week after leading 170 laps in his Red Horse Racing Toyota. Starr has finished sixth or better in three of the first seven NCTS races this season, and at Dover, he has two top-five finishes and five finishes of 11th or better in six starts. He'll be looking to make a statement on Friday. "Last week at Mansfield was disappointing from the standpoint that we had an awesome truck and led so many laps and just came up a little short at the end of the day," says Starr. "But that performance also was very positive for me and this team - I think we can look to it as a turning point and help us build some momentum up for the rest of the season."
Johnny Benson, pilot of the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra out of the Bill Davis Racing stable, has finished fourth and sixth in this race during the last two seasons.
"Dover is a really neat place to race," says Benson. "You can definitely make your truck get up and go there, but you also have to be careful at The Monster Mile. A driver really has to pay attention the entire race, because it is a track where you can wreck before you even realize it. I really do like racing at Dover though and we seem to run pretty well there too, so hopefully we can keep running good and move up some more in the points this weekend."
On possible wild-card is Rick Crawford, driver of the Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford F-150. Crawford has one pole, one runner-up finish and two third-place runs here over eight starts. Crawford, who is second in points, has quietly put together a great season so far, completing all but one lap run and never finishing outside the top 15.
Points leader Todd Bodine has won three NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Dover, but has never finished higher than third in a Truck race here. Could this be the weekend he breaks through in his Lumber Liquidators Toyota? It just might be.
Third-place points man Matt Crafton, driver of the No. 88 Menard's Chevrolet Silverado, won two weeks ago at Lowe's Motor Speedway, but he's never had much luck at Dover, where in seven starts, his best finish is ninth and he's only led a total of three laps.
As for the rest of the field, there are still plenty of good drivers out there - past champions Mike Skinner, Jack Sprague, Ted Musgrave and Brendan Gaughan, as well as guys like Terry Cook, Erik Darnell and Chad McCumbee, who've had great seasons so far and even last week's rookie winner, Donny Lia. But given the history involved in prior races, the favorites remain Ronnie and Rowdy.

Mike Skinner captured the pole for Friday's AAA Insurance 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Dover International Speedway. The No.5 Toyota Tundra circled the "Monster Mile" in 23.165 seconds (155.407 mph).
The pole victory was Skinner's first of the season and series-record 44th of his truck career. Last season, Skinner broke the single-season mark for pole wins with 11, but his best start in 2008 was a pair of second-places at California and last week at Mansfield.
"Anything can happen here at Dover, I just hope we're at the right place at the right time today," said Skinner.
Starting on the front row with Skinner will be teammate Johnny Benson who posted a time of 23.195 seconds.
Sprint Cup points leader Kyle "Rowdy" Busch (23.201) and former Formula One driver Scott Speed (23.247) will make up row two. Busch has made five starts in the series collecting two wins and a second place.
Defending series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. (23.451) will start fifth.
When we last left the Craftsman Truck Series at the tiny Mansfield Motorsports Park in Ohio, we saw a first-time winner, Donny Lia, head to Victory Lane despite leading just one lap.
David Starr dominated the 250-lap event leading 170 circuits, but Lia led the most important lap - the final one. In just his eighth truck series start, Lia out-drove 2006 series champion Todd Bodine and veteran David Starr for the win. Lia won the 2007 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship and with the victory climbed to 20th in the Craftsman standings.
"We're just riding with a little momentum," said Lia, who qualified eighth.
Lia was the second straight "first-time winner" as Matt Crafton won the previous week at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
When Hornaday Jr. got involved in an early race incident which resulted in a 35th-place finish, Bodine inherited the lead in the standings, by just eight markers over Rick Crawford, 45 over Crafton, 58 over Benson and 64 over Hornaday Jr. in the best of NASCAR's championship races.
Today's event is set to drop the green flag at 5 p.m. (et).

Reason: official race results

DOVER, Del. (AP)—Scott Speed celebrated his win as if he was ready to paint the town red. Should work out fine for a driver who already had painted his toenails blue.
Speed made it three straight first-time winners in the Craftsman Truck Series, pulling away to win his first career race Friday night at Dover International Speedway. Speed won in only his sixth career start.
“We had good strategy and an awesome truck,” Speed said. “We got everything we could out of it.”
Speed had nearly as much fun celebrating the victory as he did driving in the AAA Insurance 200.
When told there was never a repeat winner at Dover, he quipped, “I haven’t been back yet.” Then he plopped his cap on the head of the Monster trophy.
Later, Speed revealed he had his toenails painted blue on the plane ride to Delaware.
“You’ve obviously never experienced the joy of having someone take care of your feet,” he said, laughing. “My feet were very, very soft, very beautiful for my standards.”
Speed followed Donny Lia at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park and Matt Crafton at Lowe’s Motor Speedway as first-time winners in the series. Speed, the former Formula One driver, and Lia are Truck Series rookies.
“Whether we win or not, it doesn’t affect my confidence,” Speed said. “I don’t let results control how I feel about myself.”
Of course, a trip to the spa helps him feel good, too.
Kyle Busch looked like he was going to dominate another series race, holding a 5.5-second lead at one point until transmission trouble sent him to the garage. The transmission was changed and the No. 51 returned to the track. Busch led a race-high 96 laps, but finished 27th.
Jack Sprague was second and Ron Hornaday Jr. third. Travis Kvapil and Crafton rounded out the top five.
Hornaday said Speed’s quirky personality made him a unique fit in the garage.
“He is a winner now, so he’s going to fit in very well,” Hornaday said.
Speed was the best-known American in F-1 until he returned to the United States this year to drive stock cars. He competes in the ARCA and Truck Series and knows he might soon be racing in the Sprint Cup Series.
“The learning curve I’ve had is amazing,” he said. “I’m looking forward to continuing on and looking forward to my first Cup race. I’m not in any rush. I’m having the time of my life just coming over here and trying to learn the sport. It’s awesome.”
Speed’s pit crew made a two-tire stop on the No. 22 Toyota late in the race that put him in position to pass Todd Bodine for the lead. He led the final 51 laps and beat Sprague by 3.379 seconds.
“He outsmarted us in the pit stops,” Hornaday said.
Hornaday leads the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings by one point over Crafton
