Didn't see this one coming

KERNERSVILLE, North Carolina (Ticker)—Jack Sprague has been released from Kevin Harvick Inc., the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team announced Monday.

A three-time NCTS champion, Sprague has struggled this season, recording just five top-five finishes in 20 starts. The 13-year veteran currently is eighth in the series points standings, 489 points behind leader Ron Hornaday Jr.

“The performance of the No. 2 team was not up to either Jack or KHI’s standards,” Harvick said. “My main goal now is to prepare the team to run for a championship in 2009.”

Harvick announced that he will replace Sprague in the No. 2 Chevrolet Silverado for the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway.

“I am looking forward to getting behind the wheel in Martinsville,” Harvick said. “It should be a lot of fun.”

Sprague, 44, ranks second on the all-time NCTS list with 28 victories and 32 poles. He is the all-time series leader with 136 top-five finishes and 203 top-10s.

Sprague replaces Cook in No. 60 Wyler Racing truck
By Team Release
October 8, 2008
10:28 AM EDT

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Wyler Racing announced Tuesday that three time Truck Series champion Jack Sprague will pilot the No. 60 Wyler Racing Toyota for the remainder of the 2008 season, beginning with the race at Martinsville on Oct. 18. Sprague, who currently sits eighth in the Truck Series standings, replaces Terry Cook who has been released after competing in the first 20 races of the season for the team.

"This has been a crazy last few days," Sprague said. "This has been a very tough year and I welcome the opportunity to be back in the 60 truck for the rest of the season. I have the utmost respect for Kevin Harvick and his race organization and was in total support of the change he made yesterday in the No. 2 truck. This is a nice opportunity for Wyler Racing and me to get back together. Really KHI and Wyler Racing are making the same moves and all of this is the tough part of this business. I hate it for Terry [Cook] as he has done a great job for Wyler Racing this year."

This marks a reunion of Sprague and Wyler Racing as they competed together for 55 races starting late in the 2005 season through the end of last year. Ironically, their first race together was in Martinsville at the end of the '05 season and that will be the site of their first race back together here in '08. Together Sprague and Wyler Racing formed a potent combination as they visited Victory Lane three times -- including Daytona in the 2007 season opener -- earned four poles, 18 top-five and 27 top-10 finishes.

"We appreciate the effort that Terry Cook put forth for us this season and we have nothing but positive things to say about him. He's truly a class act," team president David Wyler said. "However, we are not totally pleased with how our team has performed this season and as we look forward to growth in 2009 we needed to do something to help us evaluate what we need to do to get better. It is no secret about our relationship with Jack and when he became available it seemed very logical for us to put him in the truck for the remaining five races. I do not enjoy this part of the business but at the end of the day it is a business and we need to do what we think will help this race organization in the long run."

While this reunion is currently only for the remaining races in the '08 season, efforts are under way to secure sponsorship for the '09 season that would allow this combination to remain intact.
