Thumbs up Cook to start 250th Truck Series race at Michigan

By Sporting News Wire Service
June 15, 2007
01:00 PM EDT

The 10th stop in the Craftsman Truck Series just happens to be where Terry Cook came to watch the legends of NASCAR -- Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and others -- do battle as he grew up.

Saturday, Michigan International Speedway will become special to Cook for another reason: He will become the third driver to make his 250th start, seven behind Jack Sprague and Rick Crawford who share the series mark. Cook has the current record for consecutive starts, up to 232 when he takes the green flag in Saturday's Michigan 200.

"I truly hope I'm around for another 250-plus," Cook said, a native of Sylvania, Ohio. "Truly, Michigan is my home track. I grew up about 45 minutes from there near Toledo, Ohio, which is a stone's throw from the Michigan-Ohio state line."

Cook's career started just across the line in Ohio. He won a handful of track championships at small tracks such as Sandusky and Flat Rock Speedway before teaming with Duke Thorson to get into truck racing in 1996.

"He came to work here ... and part of that whole process was we thought we'd buy a truck and try our hand at the Truck Series," Thorson said. "When we started the team it was one truck and Terry. It was really a barebones deal when we started.

"We probably didn't know at the time what we had accomplished vs. today. Since then, I've seen him mature."

Together they won their first pole (1997) and race (1998), both at the defunct Flemington (N.J.) Speedway. In Cook's 11 seasons, he has six wins, eight poles and four top-10 points finishes, including eighth last year. But statistics don't tell the whole story of what the Truck Series has meant to Cook.

"I found my wife in the Truck Series," said Cook, who is married to former ESPN pit reporter Amy East. "Actually, our first date was at Michigan, and I proposed to her at Michigan."

Cook, 36, has had opportunities to move up to the Busch and Cup series but passed. He opted to drive good trucks, run up front and race for wins rather than run in the back of the pack in NASCAR's top two series.

"I would still like to get an opportunity to race in the Nextel Cup Series," Cook said. "(But) obviously, the crowning achievement in anybody's career is a championship. Nothing would make me happier than to raise that championship trophy in the Truck Series."

If he never does, it still would have been a great ride.

"It means I had a lot of fun and I got paid to do what I love to do," he said. "It's truly a dream come true."

Cool Kvapil Finally Gets Win!

Kvapil passes Busch with lap to go to win at Michigan
Martin dominates early but engine failure ends his day

By Jenna Fryer
The Associated Press
June 16, 2007
06:17 PM EDT

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Travis Kvapil patiently stalked Kyle Busch around Michigan International Speedway, finally passing him with one lap to go Saturday to score his first Craftsman Truck Series win since 2004.

Busch led four times for 38 laps, but was struggling to control his Chevrolet when Kvapil closed in on him in the final 10 laps. Kvapil, the 2003 series champion, made several peeks around him, only to scoot back in line behind Busch.

He finally attempted a pass in the fourth turn, sliding ahead of Busch as they closed in on the start / finish line with the white flag waving above them. Kvapil then pulled away on the final lap to win for the first time since Sept. 18, 2004.

"I knew I was a little better than Kyle, but I just didn't want to get out there too soon,'' said Kvapil, who started from the pole.

It was Kvapil's second win at Michigan, sixth of his career, but first since he joined Roush Fenway Racing at the start of this season. He replaced Mark Martin, who won six times in the truck last season.

"It feels like it's been forever,'' Kvapil said. "There were big shoes to fill after Mark Martin left this team.''

Crew chief Mike Beam said the team had been feeling the heat to get back to Victory Lane. They took pride in finally doing it at MIS, which is team owner Jack Roush's home track.

"We've struggled all year, we felt we've really let Travis down,'' Beam said. "I knew Travis could do this, we've got all the confidence in him. And it's good to win here for Jack in Michigan, they've been putting the heat on us -- this is our Daytona 500.''

Busch said his truck was too loose to hold off Kvapil's charge.

"I was all over the place, the middle, the bottom, the top,'' Busch said. "I just could never find a place that would let me get a good run off the corner. Our truck was good enough, solid enough to win the race, but just not quite good enough to get where I needed to be off the corner.''

Brendan Gaughan finished third and was followed by Mike Skinner, Ted Musgrave, Rick Crawford and Todd Bodine. Kevin Harvick, Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday rounded out the top 10.

Skinner extended his lead in the standings to 113 points over Hornaday.

The race opened up after Martin lost the engine on his Ford. He led four times for 35 laps before the failure, and finished 33rd.

"Mark was the class of the field today,'' Busch said. "He was gone. Nobody could touch that thing. But thankfully we could make a race out of it when his motor went.''
