Martin, Harvick say trucks too much fun to pass up

All-Star weekend for the Cup Series is a chance for guys to relax. No worrying about points, no worrying about finishes, just a chance to relax for two weeks at home and try to win a million bucks in the All-Star Challenge.
So why do Cup guys, who rarely get a break during the season, race the Truck Series race on Friday night?
"Variety is the spice of life," according to Nextel Cup veteran Mark Martin.
Five Cup drivers -- Martin, A.J. Allmendinger, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Ken Schrader -- will drive in Friday's Quaker Steak and Lube 200 at Lowe's Motor Speedway (8:30 p.m. ET, SPEED) in the sixth Craftsman Truck Series race of the season.
Martin will race in his second NCTS race this season when he gets behind the wheel of the No. 21 Ford. His first race went well at California when he led 45 laps and had the lead with six laps remaining. But on a restart, Ron Hornaday bumped Martin and he spun into the infield, losing the lead and ultimately finishing a disappointing 23rd.
But for a guy who said he was slowing down in 2007, he's certainly not showing it.
"I am carrying out that plan to cut back," Martin said. "I'm not interested in chasing that [Nextel Cup Series] championship. I had a great career, but 2007 isn't the year to do that anymore. There are portions of my life that have been passing me by. I hope to pick up a few pieces of that at age 48."
While a championship isn't in the cards for Martin anymore, getting his priorities back in order is -- and that begins at home.
"In my whole life, racing has always come first and then family. I have the opportunity to change that," Martin said.
Harvick, on the other hand, has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon. After running away with the Busch Series championship in 2006, he has cut some Busch races out of his schedule. But he has added some NCTS events to take their place.
Charlotte will mark the third time this season Harvick had piloted his own KHI-owned No. 2 Chevrolet. At California, Harvick brought home an eighth-place finish and in Martinsville he finished fourth.
If recent history is any indication, Harvick should finish in the top five once again. His last two races at Lowe's Motor Speedway in a truck -- a fourth and a fifth.
Still, it's been a couple years since Harvick cruised the 1.5-mile track in a truck and he knows it's different than what he is accustomed to.
"The trucks are almost wide open all the way around because they have so much more downforce," Harvick said. "With the cars, you have to lift off the throttle in the corners.
"With the trucks, you arc it in a lot more and roll out of the gas a lot slower in the corners. [The trucks] draft a lot more like a car would at Daytona or Talladega because they are so much boxier and punch such a bigger hole in the air."
Even with a chance to take a well-deserved break, Harvick saw too many positives to keep him on the racetrack.
"I really enjoy racing the trucks because they are so much fun," he said. "I like racing at Charlotte, under the lights on the All-Star weekend. I think it gets everybody excited."
Martin agrees, and even though he has cut down to a part-time schedule, he couldn't resist driving a truck for the Wood Brothers this weekend.
"I've always loved the Craftsman Truck Series," Martin said. "It's a lot of fun and, I think, it's some of the most competitive racing we have."

Kyle Busch doesn't dabble in the Craftsman Truck Series very often, but when he does he makes the most of it.
Busch will make his 2007 Truck Series debut in the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Friday (8:30 p.m. ET, SPEED) where he will try to win the race for the third consecutive year.
Last year, Busch also made his NCTS debut at Charlotte posting his only victory. In seven races he finished in the top 10 in all seven, including three top-fives.
"You come over here wanting to have some fun and race hard and do a good job," Busch said. "That is what we're going to do."
Busch will again pay homage to one of his favorite movies, Days of Thunder, by driving the No. 51 Chevrolet and have "Rowdy Busch" above the window. "Rowdy Burns," the character played by Michael Rooker, drove the No. 51 in the 1990 movie starring Tom Cruise.
Interesting Fact
3 Only three drivers have won three consecutive races at the same track. Jack Sprague did it at Phoenix from 1996-97, Ted Musgrave did it at California from 2001-03 and the record for most consecutive wins at one track belongs to Brendan Gaughan who won four in a row at Texas Motor Speedway from 2001-03.
Fun Fact
1 Believe it or not, "Days of Thunder" is actually an Academy Award nominee. In 1991, the stock-car flick was nominated for Best Sound along with "Dick Tracy", "The Hunt for Red October", "Total Recall" and winner "Dances with Wolves".
All the Facts

Veteran Hornaday races to Quaker Steak and Lube win
By Jenna Fryer
The Associated Press

11:36 PM EDT
CONCORD, N.C. -- Ron Hornaday Jr. passed A.J. Allmendinger with 36 laps to go, then held on for two restarts to win the Craftsman Truck Series race at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Friday night.
Hornaday was driving toward the win when Johnny Benson lost a tire and hit the wall to bring out a caution with 11 laps to go. It set up a restart with five to go, and Hornaday got a decent jump on Allmendinger at the line.
Allmendinger was closing when Eric Darnell crashed to bring out the seventh caution. It sent the race into overtime for a two-lap sprint to the finish.
Hornaday was the leader, with Allmendinger in second and series champion Todd Bodine in third. Hornaday again got a good start, and Allmendinger briefly closed in on his bumper. But he couldn't get close enough to attempt a pass, Hornaday pulled out and Allmendinger never challenged over the final lap.
"I thought he had us, but I ran him down low and blocked him," Hornaday said. "Made sure I took some air off his nose. Man, I am so excited."
It was Hornaday's 30th career Truck Series victory, but the first at LMS. Hornaday, driving for Kevin Harvick Inc., also scored the first win of the season for Chevrolet after Toyotas won four of the first five events.
Allmendinger, the former Champ Car star, had a career-best second-place finish.
"Ron was just a touch better," Allmendinger said. "If he made a mistake, I was going to be all over him."
But after crashing his truck during an afternoon practice session, Allmendinger was thrilled to even compete. In the midst of a trying first season in NASCAR, Allmendinger has struggled to make Nextel Cup races -- he's been in only four of 11 -- and hasn't contended for a victory since the end of his open-wheel career.
"It's obviously an adjustment," Allmendinger said. "At the end of the Champ Car season, last October, that really was the last time I was in contention. But I knew coming into this that it was going to be a challenge. You've got to reset your goals.
"Making Cup races right now, that's a victory to me. I was going to be pleased with a top-10, so second, it feels great."
Bodine was third, followed by Mark Martin, Ted Musgrave, Mike Bliss, Matt Crafton, Mike Skinner, T.J. Bell and Rick Crawford.
