"Why it took me 20 years to win the Daytona 500"

"Reasons It Took Earnhardt 20 Years To Win The Daytona 500" - From Dale himself on Letterman

10. It took me 19 years to realize I had the emergency brake on.
9. Finally rotated and balanced my mustache.
8. Quit training with the Canadian snowboarding team.
7.Stopped letting my 300-pound cousin Ricky ride shotgun.
6. New strategy: pretend I'm Dave driving home on the Merritt Parkway.
5. Who cares that it took me 20 years -- at least my name isn't Dick Trickle.
4. Just figured out that if you mash the gas pedal all the way down, the car takes off like a son-of-a-bitch.
3. My new pit crew -- The Spice Girls.
2. This year whenever I passed somebody I gave them the finger.

1. My secret to success: one can of motor oil in my engine, one can of motor oil in my pants!

I like it, but surely this is in the wrong forum as it is about the great man himself, Dale Earnhardt senior. God rest his soul.

If this was the 1950's, Jeff Gordon would be Pat Boone and Dale Jr. would be Elvis....both were great singers, but we know who had the most fans.

Wink Q&A with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Fingerprint Inc., For Budweiser Racing, Press Release

Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet, met with media following Friday's practice at New Hampshire International Speedway. Dale Jr. enters the race weekend third in the Nextel Cup point standings:

What do you think about Juan Montoya’s jump to NASCAR?

“It’s pretty cool. It’ll be cool to see how he does.
How difficult do you think it will be for him adjusting to these cars?

“I’ve never been in a Formula 1 car, so I don’t know what he’s up against really.”
There’s a good chance that Jeff Gordon could tie your father in victories this week. What would that mean to you if that happened?

“That’s a pretty good accomplishment for anybody. I’d have to shake Jeff’s hand, because any time you tie my daddy in anything, it’s something to be proud of.”
The fan base for you and Jeff is kind of like the Yankees and Red Sox. How do you think the fans will react?

“I really don’t know.”
Saw a lot of springs coming out of the trailer in the first practice. How’s your car today?

“Ahhh, it’s alright. I mean, it’s OK. It’s sort of frustrating trying to get it to where it will run in practice.”
What’s the challenge of this race track? What’s the key to having success here?”

“Turning in the middle… about like everywhere else.”
You’ve run against Jeff Gordon your entire career. How do you compare (Jeff and your dad) as race car drivers?

Well, dad was really aggressive, and Jeff wasn’t very aggressive. It seems like he’s getting more aggressive as he’s getting older. Jeff is really, really smooth, where dad was sort of barbaric with the race car. They were very different in their driving styles.”
Are you going to watch the Busch race from your pit box tomorrow?

“I don’t know, I haven’t decided.”
I know you’ve done it in the past. What do you like about being on top of the pit box?

“I don’t like it up there. I get mad, get angry, I want to drive. I want to tell people what to do, so I try not to put myself in that situation. (Pause) I usually watch it from the bus or somewhere. When you’re on the pitbox, man, you either want to be driving the car or tell everybody what to do, and it’s hard to sit there and maintain your position, know what I mean? It’s hard to stay in your place as the owner, so it’s sort of frustrating to be out there. It pumps the guys up to be out there, but at the same time they gotta know it’s frustrating at times.”
There was so much retaliation at this track last fall. Do you think that will happen again?

“I can’t remember what happened here last year.”
Robby Gordon throwing his helmet… Michael Waltrip…

“Oh yeah, that seems like two or three years ago.”
Do you think we’ll see that again?

“I don’t know. That sort of stuff ain’t really characteristic with this race track, so I don’t know. We’ll just have to see.”
What’s going on with the race car right now?

“I’m just hot as hell, man. I mean, I don’t know, they got this air cooler box that ain’t worth a damn. It won’t work. When we qualify, they take all the stuff that dissipates the heat in between the exhaust and the chassis off the car, so it’s just frustrating. We’re not real fast, and it’s just frustrating as hell. I just want to run better. (I’m not frustrated) at any one person… just at the race car.”
Did you guys get all you want out of the Indy test? You guys left after a day…

“Well it was raining real hard, and I told (Tony Eury) Junior when we got up in the morning that if it was raining that I would come pick him up, but I was going home. We had a pretty good day on Monday. Junior felt good enough about that to cut the test short, but (the weather) didn’t look great for Wednesday either.”
There’s been a big rumor about Danica Patrick might be considering running here. You know what it’s like being a media star. What do you think it would be like for her if she came over?

“It would be tough for her, but that probably has no bearing on her decision with whatever she wants to do with her life. If she wants to drive stock cars, if that’s what she wants to do, no media pressure or anything like that is going to deter her decision. Obviously, she’s got a good idea of what it would be like, because she’s probably had a lot of pressure on her so far from the media. Ya know, she probably would have a tough time with the schedule because their schedule is so short. I believe she’s already commented on the schedule as being a turn-off, and it is to pretty much everybody else. I think she’d have fun, and she’d probably have a better time or an easier learning curve than Juan (Montoya) would, but Juan with his experience and his draft-knowledge of race cars over the years and his success, he’s not going to have any trouble. He’s been in a different world. I think the biggest thing Juan is going to face is the change in the culture itself.”
What did your dad think of Jeff Gordon?

“They had a great respect for each other, and had a few business deals together. They worked together off the race track. They had a great relationship. They were really good friends actually.”
Do you think he would be pleased to see Jeff move in on his win mark right now?

“Yeah, sure he would, but it still ain’t first. Y’all act like it’s the big 200. How many did Dad have, 71 wins? Something like that?”
Seventy-six wins.

“Seventy-six. Yeah, well, when you look at the success Jeff has had, it’s really no surprise.”
