Dave Blaney on Atlanta Motor Speedway…

"We just can’t seem to finish a race this year, which is obviously a problem. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. But our Cat Racing Toyota is always running well when it happens, which is one way to look on the bright side of things, I guess. Our overall program is so much better than it was last year, and it’s frustrating to be able to get in a good qualifying lap and run up front and then have something go wrong. We’ve shown how we’re capable of running and now we have to work on showing how we’re capable of finishing. This team has overcome a lot worse than this, and the big picture is that we’ve got our Toyotas running well, so things are bound to turn around.”

Wink Dave Blaney Post-Coca-Cola 600 Recap

Bill Davis Racing, Press Release

CONCORD, N.C. (May 29, 2007) – After a successful run last weekend in the NASCAR Nextel Open, Dave Blaney and the Caterpillar Racing team returned to Lowe’s Motor Speedway looking for more of the same result. After qualifying in the eighth position for the Coca-Cola 600, Blaney rebounded from early misfortune to take the checkered flag in 18th place.

Thursday evening was a bit of a nail-biter, with the No. 22 team still standing just outside the top 35 in owners’ points and needing the make the show based on speed. Once again, Blaney was up for the challenge. After running a speed of 183.861 mph on his first lap and posting the fastest speed of the seven Toyotas that made qualifying attempts, he earned the eighth spot on the starting grid.

Blaney took the green flag for the start of the event, and there was an almost immediate cause for concern in the pits. A large piece of paper lodged itself on the grille of the Cat Camry during the opening laps, and Blaney could do nothing but sit back and watch the engine temperature rise while hoping the paper would fly off. When that didn’t happen, Blaney took matters into his own hands and gave up his eighth-place spot to let the car behind him pass. Once that car was past, Blaney did his best to get as close as possible to the rear bumper of the car, hoping to disturb the air on the front of the Cat car and dislodge the debris. The plan worked, and by lap 14, the engine temperature began to fall, much to the relief of the driver and crew.

Blaney communicated to crew chief Kevin Hamlin that the handling of the car was very tight in the center of the corners, and a yellow flag on lap 47 enabled the team to make a pit stop for adjustments several laps later. Hamlin called for four fresh tires, fuel, a wedge adjustment and the removal of a spring rubber from the left rear during that stop. Blaney returned to the track in 20th place. It’s a well-proven fact in racing that cautions breed cautions, and Sunday evening was no exception. With the entire field bunched up for the lap 53 restart, there was no place for Blaney to go but into the back of someone else when the No. 48 car lost a tire tread on the frontstretch. A multi-car incident ensued, and Blaney was stuck in the middle of it, bouncing off cars and spinning several times down the frontstretch. He was able to drive the car into the pits to the attention of this team without losing a lap, and the crew repaired the damage to the front end. Luckily the damage appeared mostly cosmetic, but the team made several pit stops to repair the car well enough to run another 350 laps.

Blaney lined up 24th on the lap 61 restart and continued to fight a tight handling condition for the first 150 laps. Hamlin made air pressure or chassis adjustments during every pit stop in an effort to free up the car. The team went a lap down to the leader on lap 117, but remained in the top 25 for much of that time. As the sun went behind the grandstands and the air temperature at the 1.5-mile speedway cooled, the handling of the Caterpillar Toyota went from tight to loose and then back to tight. The team worked hard to find the balance Blaney needed and made gains throughout the night. Despite the damage to the car and losing a lap early, Blaney held a spot in the top 20 for most of the remainder of the event. The No. 22 Bill Davis Racing team took the checkered flag in the 18th spot, posting its second-highest finish of the season in the process. The team still stands in 36th place in the owners’ point standings, 92 markers behind the No. 70 car in 35th.

The Nextel Cup Series next travels to “The Monster Mile” in Dover, Del., for the Autism Speaks 400 Sunday afternoon. Qualifying for the event will be held Friday, and Sunday’s race is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. ET start. The race will broadcast on FOX, MRN Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio.

Arrow Blaney crew chief Hamlin released

Lee Spencer
FOXSports.com
Posted: 5 hours ago

DOVER, Del. - Bill Davis Racing released veteran crew chief Kevin Hamlin on Saturday.

Hamlin, 47, oversaw the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge with driver Dave Blaney for the last two seasons. Of all the Toyota teams, Blaney has qualified for the most races in 2007, but on Friday he missed his second race of the season. Blaney is 36th in points and had to make the race on time.

"With the competition as strong as it is, we just didn't feel like we were moving forward," said BDR's competition director Tommy Baldwin. "We had to do something, had to find that spark that would get the 22 moving in the right direction. We need to get both cars up to speed and we'll keep digging until we get there."

Baldwin, who was interim crew chief on the No. 36 BDR Camry before David Hyder came on board this weekend, will fill the same role on the No. 22 until a replacement can be found. Baldwin also hired Mike Cooper as the car chief on the No. 36 to work under Hyder. Cooper worked at Robert Yates Racing and Ginn Racing before joining BDR.

Hamlin began his crew chief career with Jimmy Spencer in 1991, but enjoyed his greatest success with the late Dale Earnhardt. The pair won their first of five races together at the 1999 Talladega spring race and posted 23 top fives and 54 top 10s in two-and-a-half seasons before Earnhardt's death.

Unhappy another one bites the dust!

It happens again! Yet another CC bites the dust, possibally prematurely? Dave Blaney was one of the best running Toyotas this season, and is the top ranking Toyota in the standings at 36. But when Blaney failed to make the 2nd race of the season, they got rid of the CC! If MWR did this he would've gone through 6-7 CC's by now! It is becoming a common place occurrence to get rid of the CC when things go wrong with a team. Teams use to stick it out and work through problems with the key members of the team in tact, but that is not how it is now. Please see the related thread "Endangered Species" :

I couldn't agree with you more Mrs12. This firing CC's left and right is getting a bit ridiculous! Talk about teams/owners wanting instant gratification! Geez !

It isn't the crew cheif's fault in my opinion, Toyota just doesn't have the best equipment.

· Blaney at California Speedway…

Blaney has made nine starts on the Fontana-area track during his Cup Series career, starting as high as 15th and finishing as high as ninth. He has scored two top-15 finishes in Cup Series competition at California Speedway and has qualified in the top 15 on two occasions. Blaney’s Cat Camry was running near the front of the field during the spring race at this track when engine problems forced him to retire from the event early. · BDR at California…Competitors driving Bill Davis Racing-owned cars have been racing at California Speedway since 1997 and have made 19 starts. Those drivers have posted two top-10 finishes in Cup Series competition.

· Moving on up…

The Caterpillar Racing team continues to hold the coveted 35th place in the owners’ point standings and is looking ahead to chase down both the No. 45 and No. 70 teams. The No. 22 entry stands only 21 points outside of 34th place (No. 45 team) and 27 points behind the 33rd place No. 70 team.

Dave Blaney’s Thoughts on Fontana…

“Our Cat Racing Toyota ran really well in Michigan, and because of that, we’ve really been looking forward to getting to California. We’re bringing the Michigan car this weekend to Fontana, so we’re looking for really good things this weekend. On top of that, we had a really strong run going at California Speedway in the spring before we ran into some engine issues, so hopefully we can kind of pick up where we left off. I can’t say enough about the job [crew chief] Tommy Baldwin and all of the guys at the shop have done lately. Our qualifying program has been pretty good all year, but it has really come on strong in the last month or two, and we’re getting much better come raceday as well. We weren’t happy with the way the car handled early in Bristol last week, but Tommy made some major changes, and by the second half of the race we were as fast as anyone out there. The difference between the start of the season and now is like night and day, especially since we have a better idea of how to fix problems when we run into them. We’ve got a solid team right now, and we’re really looking forward to the remainder of the season.”

Dave Blaney on Lowe’s Motor Speedway…

“We’re definitely excited about racing at Charlotte, and even more so now that we’ve got ourselves back into the top 35. That’s a big deal for this Caterpillar team. Our goal going into Talladega last weekend was to maintain our position and make sure we didn’t lose any points to the No. 21 car, so to be able to do so much more than that is really great. We’ll do everything we can to make sure that we don’t fall out again, because it sure is tough to get back in once you fall out. We shouldn’t have any problems if we can just keep running like we have been the past couple of weeks. I’ve always like racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. I like the 1.5-mile tracks like Lowe’s, and we’ve run pretty well there in the past. If we can keep ourselves out of trouble, I think it will be another pretty good weekend for us.”

Dave Blaney on the Top-35 Points Battle…

“It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for this Caterpillar Racing team. We’ve made some good progress in the top 35 fight and can breathe a little easier now. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going throughout the rest of the season and can stay in that top 35. We ran well in the beginning of the season, but for one reason or another couldn’t keep it together until the end. We knew as soon as we started doing that on a consistent basis, the finishes would come and the points would start to take care of themselves. That’s exactly what has happened, and we’re happy things are finally going our way. We felt like it was just a matter of time. It’s interesting, though, that people just seem to be starting to notice the tight battle for the top 35, because pretty much the same people that are fighting for it now have been fighting each other like crazy since halfway through the season.”
