Cool Biffle Back to Basics

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - No driver wanted to see the calendar change from 2006 to 2007 more than Greg Biffle.

After missing the "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup" last year in a season that could only be referred to as disappointing, Biffle is ready to start fresh.

That new beginning means a new crew chief in Pat Tryson, and a new wife, as Biffle and girlfriend Nicole Lunders were engaged over the holiday break.

And the other good news for Biffle is his health. He's on the mend from the dislocated shoulder he suffered in a tire testing crash at Las Vegas, which didn't bother him during last week's testing at Daytona.

"My shoulder is doing fairly well," Biffle said. "I was a little nervous coming down here about how it was gonna be inside the car – not driving the car but reaching everything – reaching over and getting the helmet off the helmet hook and trying to hook up the things behind your head that are hard to get to, and getting the seatbelts that are behind you. The reach is the biggest thing that hurts your shoulder – the range of motion – but, actually, I’m doing really well. I’m pretty happy about that, I think I’m ready to go."

Physically fit, Biffle is hoping for the same mentally as he tries to put last year's problems behind. Team owner Jack Roush has tried to give Biffle's No. 16 a new outlook with new crew chief Tryson, who comes over after working so well with the departed Mark Martin the last few seasons.

"It’s a real momentum builder for a team," Biffle said. "I hate to talk about our crash at Las Vegas, but that really, really was a big event. It was a really big crash and it was our first test together. It was our first time together as a team. It was our first time together as a group. Everybody is excited about being there and our test was going extremely well, and I feel like that really set us back a bunch – that unfortunate incident. So we’re definitely coming back from that incident, but we’re really working well together."

Tryson wasn't the only change with the No. 16 , which will carry a new primary sponsor this year in Ameriquest. Other new team members have come on board, but Biffle likes the way things are progressing.

"I like all the guys.," Biffle said. "We're finding out a lot of stuff here and when we get to some of these other places – Bristol will certainly be a place that we get scrambling in these first couple of races – California and our Vegas test. I think the team is coming together well and I like Pat and the way he executes things."

Biffle hopes Tryson will be executing a return to victory lane several times this season as well as an appearance in the "Chase."

Biffle doesn't remember LVMS pre-crash details

Biffle doesn't remember LVMS pre-crash details
Driver plans to meet with track officials during next week's test
By Ryan Smithson, NASCAR.COM

04:57 PM EST (21:57 GMT)

CONCORD, N.C. -- Greg Biffle says he doesn't remember anything that happened immediately before his vicious testing accident at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Dec. 7.

The crash, which occurred when Biffle spun his Ford in Turn 2 and hit the wall at 200 mph, dislocated Biffle's right shoulder.

The hit left Biffle with temporary blurred vision.

"I don't remember anything prior to being knocked out. I don't remember the weekend at all," Biffle said. "I don't remember going to Las Vegas, I don't remember the test, and I don't remember anything. I remember a vague picture of it."

A Jan. 10 Associated Press story said that Biffle was critical of the response time of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway medical staff, but Biffle said on Wednesday that the medical team reached him sufficiently.

"The statement of they were slow to respond or whatever, I never said that," Biffle said. "They were there and they had pulled up. I didn't say that. I remember everything that took place after that. I don't remember a lot before that."

In response to the AP story, LVMS general manager Chris Powell fired off a statement saying that Biffle's "recollection of the event is in gross error."

"Our safety team was positioned on the inside of the speedway across from the point at which Mr. Biffle's car made contact with the wall," Powell said. "The safety truck rolled toward Mr. Biffle's car, which came to a halt in the middle of the backstretch.

"When the speedway's safety truck reached Mr. Biffle's car, he already had removed his head-and-neck restraint and was attempting to exit his car. The speedway paramedic rushed to Mr. Biffle's aid, but Mr. Biffle assured the paramedic that he [Biffle] was fine and wanted only to be returned to his team's hauler in the infield."

Powell's version of events was corroborated by Kyle Busch, who was running a quarter-mile behind when Biffle crashed. Busch slowed his car to check on Biffle but headed to the garage when Biffle indicated he was OK.

"I was at the start/finish line when he wrecked," Busch said. "When I rolled behind him, it was on fire and it didn't look like he was controlling it. I started slowing down with him, and [he] finally came to a stop.

"I had already unbuckled my seat belt and was about to climb out and I saw him out. We just hand-signaled to each other whether he was OK. He was standing fine."

Biffle said he would meet with LVMS officials during the open Nextel Cup test there the week of Jan. 29.

"You know, I really wanted to tell the whole story, my side of the story, how it all played out, but I have elected not to discuss everything that happened," Biffle said. "We are going to meet there with some people and discuss what we can do different next time, I think, and leave it at that."

In its official statement, LVMS officials stated that Biffle refused to be transported to a local hospital after the crash.

"Mr. Biffle signed a form saying that he refused being transported and he himself wrote, 'I feel fine' on a release document," the statement said. "Mr. Biffle himself completed that document at 1:25 p.m., several minutes after he had been returned to the team's hauler.

"Mr. Biffle's statement was written as a response to a demand on the document that requested a reason for his refusing to be transported."

Biffle said on Wednesday that he regretted not going to an off-track hospital for observation. He said that he thinks he should have been required to receive medical clearance before he boarded an airplane and returned home.

"You need a basic 'How you feeling, did you hit your head, what day is it?'" Biffle said. "That is probably the only thing I have to say about the whole scenario.

"I probably should have handled it differently, and I was a little upset at what [Powell] said because it is not the whole story."

On the market
Although he could follow Dale Earnhardt Jr. into free agency, Greg Biffle says he is in preliminary discussions with Roush Fenway Racing about a deal through 2012 and is "pretty sure" he'll stay.

New Crew Chief Announced for Roush Fenway No. 16 Nextel Cup Team

Concord, N.C. (May 23, 2007) – It was announced today at Roush Fenway Racing that Greg Erwin will take over as crew chief of the team’s No. 16 Nextel Cup entry with driver Greg Biffle.

“We obviously weren’t performing at a level at which Jack expected and a change was made,” said Biffle.

Erwin was most recently the crew chief at Robby Gordon Motorsports for the No. 7 Nextel Cup entry. Prior to the two years at Robby Gordon Motorsports, Erwin accumulated seven years of experience as an engineer at Richard Childress Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing.

“I feel that this is one of the top crew chief opportunities in the Nextel Cup garage,” said Erwin. “If you could paint a picture of where you would like to go as a crew chief to give it a shot to win and compete for a championship, this is it. I am also excited about the backing of the engineering department at Roush and the resources they offer.

The fact that Greg Biffle is the driver was a factor that weighed heavily on my decision. He is a straight forward kind of guy and I look forward to working with him.”

Chris Andrews, current Engineering Manager at Roush Fenway Racing, will serve as interim crew chief for Greg Biffle and the No. 16 Dish Network Nextel Cup entry this weekend. Erwin will serve as an advisor on the pit box during Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 before officially taking over crew chief duties on Tuesday, May 29th.
