Jeff Burton will pilot chassis No. 155 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. Most recently, Burton raced this car to a fifth-place finish at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October. Additionally, this is the same AT&T Chevrolet Burton raced to Victory Lane at Texas Motor Speedway in April. This car also saw action at California Speedway in February, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway in March, Michigan International Speedway in June, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and California Speedway in September. (Average Start – 13.13, Average Finish – 8.13)

· Stat Facts …

In 13 starts at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS), Burton boasts two wins, three top-five and five top-10 finishes.

· Inaugural Winner …

Jeff Burton won the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race held at TMS on April 6, 1997, crossing the finish line four seconds ahead of Dale Jarrett.

· Last Time Around …

The South Boston, Va., native became the first-ever repeat winner at TMS on April 15, 2007. Burton also captured RCR’s first NASCAR Cup Series win at the Fort Worth race track.

· Double Duty …

In addition to his driving duties with the No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet, Burton, a 26-time race winner in the NASCAR Busch Series, will drive RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in the O’Reilly Challenge Saturday, November 3. Live coverage of the event begins at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on ESPN2. The race will also be broadcast on the Performance Racing Network (PRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio.

· RCR at Texas …

Dating back to 1997, RCR owns one win, four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes with drivers Burton, Dale Earnhardt, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Green. The victory came earlier this year when Burton passed Matt Kenseth on the final lap to capture his 19th career Cup Series win. Additionally, Childress, a former driver in NASCAR’s top division, earned a pair of top 10s while he was still behind the wheel at Texas World Speedway in College Station.

· Points Check …

Burton’s fifth-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway advanced the NASCAR Cup Series Chase contender one spot to eighth in the point standings. The 19-time Cup Series winner is 400 markers out of the lead and just 78 behind Tony Stewart’s fifth-place tally.

· Chat with Burton:

The Dallas Morning News (DMN) is offering fans a chance to chat with Jeff Burton. The web chat will take place on Thursday, November 1 at 12 Noon EDT for 30 minutes. The inaugural and first repeat winner at TMS will discuss the Chase for the Championship, along with his day-to-day activities from the track as he competes in both the Busch and Cup Series events this weekend. His column can be read in the motorsports section at Star-Telegram.com: Fort Worth, Dallas, News, Cowboys, Sports, Weather, Blogs, Video, RSS, XML, Northeast, Texas, Help Wanted, Jobs, Careers, Employment, Real Estate, Cars, Auto, Automotive, Classifieds, Advertising, Sales, Business Development, Searc.

· Photo Opportunity …

· Up to Speed …

The Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway will be televised live Sunday, November 4 beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on ABC and will be broadcast live on PRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 34th of 36 points-paying races will take the green-flag on Friday, November 2 at 4:40 p.m. EDT and will be telecast live on ESPN2. PRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will also provide live qualifying updates.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

Talk about your win at Texas earlier this season.

“Things went our way for that race. We needed a long green-flag run and that’s what we got. We were good when we needed to be good. Racing (Matt) Kenseth for the lead is something I will never forget. I have a lot of respect for Matt and his whole team. He’s a great racer, a smart racer and a clean racer. Drivers dream about winning a race on the last lap and that was cool – not only for me, but for the whole team as well. That’s what drivers do – we strive to win races – and we were able to do that there.”
What is it like to win a race on the last lap?

“That’s what driver’s dream of. They dream of winning on the last lap and passing a guy that you respect a lot. Basketball players dream of making a shot with no time left on the clock and race car drivers dream of turn-four last lap passes. I passed Kyle Busch in the last corner on the last lap in the Busch Series race at Vegas too. Those are the races that drivers remember.”
How tough is Texas Motor Speedway?

“Texas is an interesting race track. As the track gets older, the grooves change. As the track continues to make changes, obviously the groove will change too. Some people run the high groove and some run on the bottom. It’s a very fast race track. Texas is a very physically demanding track and the drivers are exposed to a lot of G-forces. Texas is a high-speed race track but more narrow than some of the other 1.5-mile tracks. It’s easy to get caught up in a wreck at Texas and easy to slip up just a little and get into the wall. It’s a really fun race track, but it is difficult.”

Smile Jeff Burton Checker Auto Parts 500(k) NNCS Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing, Press Release

NOTES:

· This Week’s AT&T Chevrolet at Phoenix International Raceway …
Jeff Burton will pilot chassis No. 204 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. Built new for 2007, Burton raced this car earlier this season at New Hampshire International Speedway in September where he started 23rd and finished 18th.

· Stat Facts …

In 16 starts at PIR, Jeff Burton boasts two wins, five top-five and eight top-10 finishes to go along with his Busch Series victory in 2000 at the track. In addition, Burton has finished on the lead lap in all but one of his 16 starts at the one-mile desert oval and has led a total of 215 laps.

· Right Mix at Phoenix …

Since joining RCR in August 2004, Burton has run six races at PIR, garnering a 10.2 average finish with one top-five, three top-10 and six top-15 finishes.

· RCR at PIR …

In 45 races at Phoenix, RCR has earned three wins including Kevin Harvick’s sweep of both races at PIR last season. Prior to that, Dale Earnhardt won the Checker 500 on November 4, 1990. Additionally, RCR boasts 10 top-five and 18 top-10 finishes at the one-mile desert oval.

· Movin’ On Up …

Burton’s sixth-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway advanced the NASCAR Cup Series Chase contender one spot to seventh in the point standings. The South Boston, Va., native started this year’s Chase for the Cup 10th in points and, after posting a 43rd-place finish at Talladega due to an expired engine, fell to 12th. Over the next four races, the AT&T Racing team has posted two top-five and three top-10 finishes allowing the team to vault four positions in the point standings. The 19-time Cup Series winner is 431 markers out of the lead and just 74 behind Carl Edwards’ fifth-place tally.

· Possible RCR History in the Making …

With Harvick’s Busch Series win this past weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, RCR’s Cup and Busch Series teams have collected 16 wins (Harvick – eight, Burton –five and Bowyer – three) so far this season. The record was set last year when all three RCR drivers collected a total of 17 wins. Previously, the record was 13 in 1995 when Earnhardt had five wins in the NASCAR Cup Series and Mike Skinner had eight in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

· RCR Drivers Leading the Way at Phoenix …

Harvick, who’s currently eighth in the point standings, and Burton lead all Chase participants with two wins each at PIR.

· Up Close and Personal …

The No. 31 team will be one of five teams featured this weekend on DIRECTV’S NASCAR HOTPASS. With a channel dedicated solely to the AT&T Racing team during the running of the Checker Auto Parts 500, fans will be able to watch all the action through DIRECTV’s multiple camera angles, real-time car telemetry and listen to in-car audio communication.

· Chevy’s 50th Promotion …

To help celebrate the 50th running of the Daytona 500, Chevrolet will be providing 50 race fans from 50 different states a once-in-a-lifetime weekend experience at the Daytona 500 on Feb. 17, 2008, while 10 of those individuals will win a brand new Chevy Impala. Beginning on Oct. 16 and through Dec. 3, fans can visit www.chevy.com/Daytona500 to enter.

· Catch the Action …

Live coverage of the Checker Auto Parts 500 presented by Pennzoil will be televised on ABC Sunday, November 11 beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The race will also be broadcast worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 35th of 36 points paying races will be televised on ESPN2 beginning at 5:30 p.m. EST. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will also provide qualifying updates.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

It’s been a few years since you’ve been to Victory Lane at Phoenix. What are your thoughts on this weekend’s race?

“We haven’t been as good at Phoenix as we needed to be over the last couple of years. It’s been one of the tracks we have struggled on. We’re using Phoenix as a place to go and try to get better at the one-mile race tracks. We’ve worked hard on that program but the other two teams have done a better job than we have. We’re definitely going to lean heavy on our teammates and try to learn something.”

Phoenix is the last Car of Tomorrow race for this year. Do you think that’s a relief to most teams?

“It’s been a struggle and driving the Car of Tomorrow has been tough but we have a whole year of it coming. We better start getting good at it because there’s not going to be time to get good once the year starts. I’m looking forward to running the Car of Tomorrow next year and Phoenix, because where we are in the points gives us a chance to try some things different and hopefully apply it to next year.”

How would you grade the Car of Tomorrow in its first year of competition?

“I think its okay. I think time is still left to tell. We’ve only run the Car of Tomorrow 13 times and there is a tremendous amount of information that we still don’t know about. I think it’s been good but I think there’s room to grow.”

Smile Jeff Burton Ford 400 NNCS Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing, Press Release

NOTES:

· This Week’s AT&T Chevrolet at Homestead-Miami Speedway …
Jeff Burton will race Chassis No. 155 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. Most recently, Burton raced this car to a sixth-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway in November and is the same AT&T Chevrolet he raced to Victory Lane at the same track in April. This car also saw action at California Speedway in February, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway in March, Michigan International Speedway in June, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, California Speedway in September and Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October. (Average Start – 14.67, Average Finish – 6.44)

· Stat Facts …

In eight starts at Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS), Burton boasts three top-five and three top-10 finishes and has no DNF’s to go along with his Busch Series victory in 1998 at the South Florida track.

· Double Down in Homestead …

In addition to his driving duties with the No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet, Burton, a 26-time race winner in the NASCAR Busch Series (NBS), will drive RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in the Ford 300 Saturday, November 17. Live coverage of the event begins at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on ESPN2. The race will also be broadcast on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio.

· Busch Championship …

When Burton cranks his No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet for Saturday’s 300-mile event, he will clinch the 2007 NBS owners’ title for RCR. RCR needs only two points to clinch the title over Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 Chevrolet. The only other time a split NBS title happened was 2003 when Hendrick Motorsports’ Brian Vickers won the driver’s title and RCR’s driving duo of Kevin Harvick and Johnny Sauter won the owners’ title.

· Points Check …

Despite posting the team’s 17th top-10 finish with his ninth-place finish at Phoenix International Raceway last weekend, Burton dropped to eighth in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings. Even though the 2007 Chase contender is 483 markers out of the lead, he sits just 80 points behind Tony Stewart’s fifth-place tally.

· And the Winner Is …

Burton has been named the 2007 Person of the Year by NASCAR Illustrated for his charitable efforts both on and off the track. Representatives from NASCAR Illustrated will present the South Boston, Va., native with this prestigious award on the pre-race stage prior to driver introductions on Sunday, November 18. In addition, Old Spice teamed up with NASCAR Illustrated, and as part of the award and presentation, will donate $5,000 to Duke Children’s Hospital in Burton’s name.

· RCR at Homestead …

Homestead has been a bit of an Achilles Heel for RCR and is one of the few race tracks where team owner Richard Childress hasn’t earned a victory. As a company, RCR’s best finish at HMS came in the 2003 when Harvick finished second. In 23 starts, RCR has two top-five and nine top-10 finishes at the mile-and-a-half, progressively-banked oval.

· Up Close and Personal …

The No. 31 team will be one of five teams featured this weekend on DIRECTV’S NASCAR HotPass. With a channel dedicated solely to the AT&T Racing team during the running of the Ford 400, fans will be able to watch all the action through DIRECTV’s multiple camera angles, real-time car telemetry and listen to in-car audio communication.

· Meet the Driver …

Burton is scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs Thursday, November 16 from 5-7 p.m. at the AT&T store located at 825 N. Homestead Blvd., Homestead, Fla.

· Catch the Action …

The NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be televised on ABC Sunday, November 18 beginning at 3 p.m. EST. The race will also be broadcast worldwide on the MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the final points paying race will be televised on ESPN2 Friday, November 16 beginning at 3 p.m. EST. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will also provide qualifying updates.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

The track configuration at Homestead has changed quite a bit over the seven years NASCAR has raced at the track. Do you like the current configuration?
“It’s now a very oddly built race track. It has a really fast exit to the corners but one of the slowest entries to the corners on the circuit. You have to drive Homestead differently than any other track we go to. You have to go in there and be careful to not have too tight of a box with your set up. A driver needs to be open to different options because it is such a different race track.”

Is it hard to find a good line around the track with the progressive banking?

“I think you definitely have to hunt for the best line. As a driver you have to be open to trying the different lines to find which works best for your car. The problem is when you are trying to get your car set up in practice, what line do you run? It’s really easy to set your car up for one line then move somewhere else and it doesn’t work as well. You really have to get committed to where you want to be and stay there.”
How would you rate the team’s overall performance this season?

“I would give it a B-. When we look at our program from this year, we see that we have some deficiencies that we need to work on. We understand that there are some areas that we have to improve in and a lot of times we pay more attention to the things that we’re not doing well in than the things we are doing well in. It’s hard not to focus on those things. We know that there are some areas that we have to get stronger in and that is what we’re going to focus on. We did a nice job this year but for us to continue to be competitive and put ourselves in position to win a championship, we have to take another step.”

AT&T #31 Driver Jeff Burton honored as 2007 Person of the Year

AT&T #31 Driver Jeff Burton honored as 2007 Person of the Year: Jeff Burton, driver of the #31 AT&T Chevrolet and winner of the Busch race in Miami on Saturday, is well-known for his skill and tenacity on the track, but he is also a noted philanthropist off of it. Today, Burton was named the 2007 Person of the Year by NASCAR Illustrated for his efforts both on and off the track. As part of this honor, Old Spice has agreed to donate $5,000 to Duke Children's Hospital in his name. To congratulate Burton for the award, AT&T has matched the donation with a $5,000 contribution of their own to the hospital. "AT&T wants to congratulate Jeff for this wonderful honor," said Tim McGhee, director of national sponsorships for AT&T's wireless unit. "We have always known that Jeff is not just a great driver, but a great person. We're proud that others will be aware now, too." In addition to being one of the top drivers in the sport, Burton has been an advocate for improved driver safety as well as a top supporter of the Duke Children's Hospital. Burton and his wife Kim have raised well over a million dollars for the hospital and devoted countless hours of personal time to brightening the lives of seriously ill children. The Person of the Year award is an annual honor decided on by NASCAR Illustrated staffers. This is the first time Burton has won the award, and he appears on the cover of the December issues.(AT&T PR)(11-20-2007)

Wink Top-30 drivers: Jeff Burton

SCENEDAILY
DECEMBER 31, 2007
BY SCENEDAILY STAFF REPORT

Jeff Burton and his Richard Childress Racing team continued to build on the success of 2006, winning at Texas and making the Chase For The Nextel Cup for the second consecutive season.

Burton, a 40-year-old native of South Boston, Va., began racing full time in NASCAR in 1994 for the Stavola Brothers. He also spent eight seasons driving for Jack Roush, leaving the team in his ninth year there to join RCR. He has been credited with sparking that team's resurgence. In 2007, Burton earned more than $7.4 million in purses.

During the offseason, SceneDaily is taking a look at the top 30 in 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup driver points. Here's how Burton's season unfolded:

By the numbers: Burton finished eighth in the series standings, earning one win, nine top-five and 18 top-10 finishes.

Season highlights: Winning at Texas was obviously a highlight for the team, as was making the Chase For The Nextel Cup for the season consecutive year. Burton also closed the year on a high note, earning four consecutive top-10 finishes to close out the season and posting top-10s in five of the final six races of the year. At season's end, Burton was named the NASCAR Illustrated Person of the Year.

Key setbacks: The car of tomorrow was difficult to manage for the RCR teams from time to time. Burton's largest setback, though, came in the form of a pair of engine failures that each resulted in a finish of 43rd.

Newsworthy moment: Burton's team was known for an ongoing battle with NASCAR over his sponsor. Cingular changed its logos to AT&T after a corporate merger and when it tried to do so on Burton's car, NASCAR refused to allow the change and legal action ensued. Sprint Nextel, the series sponsor, was involved in the suit as well. In the end, a settlement was reached in which AT&T was allowed to sponsor the car through 2008.

In his words: "We've done a good job. We haven't done a great job. My grading scale is pretty tough. If you look at us in comparison to the entire field, I think you could give us a 'B+' but if you look at us and you grade us on our goals I'd have to give us a 'C.' Our goals were to win more races, lead more laps, win a championship and we've fallen short in several of those categories. So I'd have to give us a 'C', but that's because I have high expectations. ...

"The reality of it is, we're not here to be here. We are here to make the Chase; that's a great thing to make the Chase, but we're here to contend for the championship and we didn't do that in a year where I thought we could. So we're disappointed."
