# New Paint Scheme for Jeff Burton: AT&T Inc. has a new look for Richard Childress Racing's #31 Chevy driven by Jeff Burton. Burton will be zipping around the track in a new paint scheme splashed with the AT&T logo. The stylish revamp coincides with the first full season of competition of the Car of Tomorrow, as well as RCR's switch from a Monte Carlo SS to an Impala SS. "AT&T is proud of its sponsorship of the # RCR 31 ride, and we wanted to make sure the car would have a lasting impression while circling the track during the 2008 season," said Tim McGhee, director of National Sponsorships for AT&T's wireless unit. "The entire AT&T Racing team is incredibly excited for the 2008 season, and the new paint scheme will be the icing on the cake," said Burton, who finished eighth in this year's Chase for the Championship standings. "Our goal is to win a championship, and with our new ride we'll be taking the checkered flag in style."(AT&T PR), for an image of the car see my #31 Paint Scheme Page.(12-20-2007)
that paint looks just about the same as what they had last year but if they change it to much Sprint will probably try to sue them.

New car will be an equalizer, but just not yet, Jeff Burton believes
DAVID POOLE
The Charlotte Observer
Jeff Burton believes the new car being used full time in the Sprint Cup Series in 2008 will eventually give more teams a chance to have more success at stock-car racing’s top level.
But not necessarily this year.
“The box that NASCAR has put us in with this car is a much tighter box than we've had in the past, there's no question,” Burton said Monday as Sprint Cup testing resumed at Daytona International Speedway.
“The opportunity for more teams to have more success I think is there long-term.
“Short term, it's such a radical difference than what we've had you're going to be in a position where some teams are just going to, plain and simple, do it better than the others. ...This car is a baby and there are so many things we don't know about it.”
The new car was used in 16 races in 2007, but will be used for all of the events this year.
“The team that takes advantage of what is the best is always going to run the best,” Burton said.
“End of story. That's what Richard Petty did, that's what Dale Earnhardt did. I'm not saying they weren't great race car drivers because they obviously were. But a great race car driver in a bad car doesn't make great results. A great car and a bad race car driver doesn't make great results. You have to have both.
“When you have something different some people are going to hit it. The more we have this car and the longer we run it, the more equal it will become. ...But let's be clear. I don't care what NASCAR does, the teams that have the best-run organizations will have the best equipment and therefore will go the fastest around the race track. It's just that simple.”
Burton said there’s no way everyone could agree that all the decisions NASCAR made with the car were the right ones. He doesn’t see how anyone could argue with its safety advances, but knows that doesn’t mean some people won’t.
“I don't think there's any doubt this is a safer race car,” Burton said.
“It's kind of funny, six years ago we sat here and NASCAR was on the hot seat for not doing enough. The story was NASCAR was lagging behind in safety compared to other forms of the sport. So then NASCAR went and made a tremendous commitment to building a car that was a tremendous amount safer, and they get blasted for that, too. In many ways NASCAR can't win.”

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
What are your thoughts as we head into a new season?
“I’m very optimistic about the 2008 season. We have worked really hard and hopefully we worked harder than the other teams. The fact is that this sport is highly competitive, there are a lot of good teams out there and everybody is trying to do the same thing and that’s to win. Time will tell if we have done enough work or not during the off-season. I’m not sure. I know that I can’t ask for anything more out of my team. I think we put as much effort in as we possibly could. We just have to hope that all our work will be good enough in the end.”
This is the first time the Impala SS will debut at Daytona. How do you approach this race compared to last year’s race?
“If you approach this race the same way you approached it with the car we raced last year, then you’re destined to be disappointed. It’s a completely different package and mindset. Learning what that mindset needs to be is what’s really important. Some teams may have already figured that out but the majority of the teams are still figuring that out.”
What would it mean to you to win the 50th running of the Daytona 500?
“Over Christmas I went to Ward's (Burton, his brother) house, and his Daytona 500 trophy was in his house. I don't know what it was about it, but I saw that trophy and it was like it was the first time I had ever seen it. Any win is a big win, but when you can look at -- if you look at a trophy like that and have that sitting in your house, that's a different kind of win. It's one of those that last forever and it has so much meaning. The 50th anniversary only enlightens and enhances that. It would be really special.”

· Stat Facts …
In 15 Cup starts at California Speedway, Burton has posted one pole, five top-five and six top-10 finishes.
· Holdin’ Down the Streak …
Burton has remained in the top 12 of the point standings for 65 consecutive races, the longest current streak of any driver in the Cup Series.
· Since We’re Talking Stats …
Burton is ranked eighth in NASCAR’s Average Running Position category (13.8) and is currently the sport’s fourth-best Quality Passer (303) – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved while running in the top-15 during green-flag conditions. He is 10th in the Driver Rating category (92.8). The Driver Rating is a formula that combines the following categories: wins, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum points a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The Driver Rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.
· Double Down West Coast Style …
In addition to racing the No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet Impala SS in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race, Burton will drive the No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS for RCR in the Stater Bros. 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at California Speedway on Saturday, February 23. This weekend’s race is the first of 12 that Burton is scheduled to drive the Holiday Inn Chevrolet. The race can be seen live on ESPN2 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).
· One Trophy Missing From the Shelf …
RCR has earned a Cup Series victory at 18 of the 22 tracks on the 2008 schedule. The only tracks on the current schedule where RCR hasn’t earned wins are California Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway. Additionally, RCR has Cup Series wins at 21 tracks, the three defunct tracks being North Wilkesboro (N.C.), Riverside (Calif.) and Rockingham (N.C.).
· California Driver …
Jeff Burton isn’t the only member of the AT&T Racing team with driving experience in California. Crew chief Scott Miller was behind the wheel on six occasions at the now-defunct Riverside International Raceway from 1981-1984, with a top finish of 14th at the nine-turn road course in Southern California. Miller raced in the NASCAR Winston West Series from 1983-1986 accumulating two poles, one win and six top-five finishes.
· Making a Pit Stop …
Before heading to the west coast to compete in this weekend’s Auto Club 500, AT&T driver Jeff Burton will visit Darlington Raceway on Wednesday, February 20. The winner of the 50th running of the Southern 500 will be on-hand to help construction crews pave the historic race track and visit with media. Track president Chris Browning will also present Burton with a piece of the historic start/finish line from the track “Too Tough to Tame.”
· Up to Speed …
The Auto Club 500 at California Speedway will be televised live on Sunday, Feb. 24 beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST on FOX. The race will also be broadcast live on Motor Racing Network and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the second of 36 points-paying races on the 2008 NASCAR Cup Series tour begins Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. EST and will broadcast live on SPEED.
JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
You finished fourth in last year’s event. What do you remember most about that race?
“I thought we had an honest chance to win that race. The No. 17 was really good there at the end and the No. 29 came on strong there at the end, too. I messed up and spun the rear tires on the last restart. I restarted second and just messed up. I don’t know if I had anything for Matt (Kenseth) or not but it was a good day and a disappointing day at the same time. Anytime you can restart second with two laps to go, you know you have a great shot to win. Unfortunately, I messed up that chance.”
Are you concerned about running the Impala SS at California Speedway?
“I’m not concerned about it at all. You’re going to see racing the same way you have been seeing it. This car drives pretty well on big tracks. I have very little concern about the quality of racing.”
How do think the RCR cars will stack up against the competition?
“I think we have room to grow. I think we still have some ground to catch up on. I think we have made some gain with the COT program but we still have more things to work on. My assessment is the (Joe) Gibbs’ cars, Hendrick cars and Roush cars look good. We look good, too, but some of those cars make us seem like we’re just a step off and we have to continue to work so we can close that gap.”
Why is it so important to run well at California Speedway?
“Leaving California knowing you can run well there is very important because it kind of shapes your year. It lays the groundwork for the mile-and-a-half and two-mile racetracks – where you are in the scheme of things. It’s real important to get off to a good start because if you don’t then you start wondering how are we going to fix this. It’s difficult to turn the ship around when things are not going so well. It’s important to go to California and compete at a high level because it builds confidence in the equipment that you have.”

Meanwhile, RCR prepared race cars have also led 2,695 laps at the 1.54-mile quad-oval. Childress, a former driver on NASCAR’s senior circuit, recorded his best finish at Atlanta with a ninth-place effort in the Atlanta Journal 500 on Nov. 2, 1980.

Qualifying for the fourth of 36 NASCAR Cup Series events will take the green flag at 6:30 p.m. EDT Friday, March 7 and will be telecast live on SPEED.
JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
How important is it to run well on mile-and-a-half tracks?
“Because there are so many mile-and-a-half race tracks on the schedule, it’s really important to be successful on those types of tracks. Some people say the real season starts at California. I don’t believe that. I think the real season starts Saturday in practice (at Daytona) but the way the points are paid and with so many mile-and-a-half and two-mile tracks on the schedule, it’s important to have a solid intermediate program. If not, then you don’t have a chance of competing for the championship. So, it’s a part of the program that we have worked exceptionally hard on and I hope we have done it well enough. The effort has been good so we’ll just have to see how we stack up.”
How does it feel taking a car to Atlanta that you have never driven before?
“These cars are obviously completely different than the old cars in a lot of ways. Because of the front end on the cars, we can’t travel the cars very much before they hit the race track. Of course, when you go to qualify you’re going faster which makes the car want to travel more. There’s a big transition between qualifying trim and race trim. In the old cars we found ways to understand how to switch over. What that car did from race trim verses qualifying trim we had a pretty good understanding of what it took. We are still trying to figure that out with these cars. On a fast track like Atlanta, you are going to see cars that are way off of the pole. I think you are going to see cars struggle and the teams that qualify well are not going to have trouble. I think you are going to see a bigger disparity than what you normally see just because we don’t know a lot about it. The more we run them, the more we’ll learn. We have teams in the garage that claim that they don’t do anything from race trim to qualifying trim and we have teams in the garage that say they have major changes and a lot of that is driver preference. I think what it really boils down to is getting the driver accustomed and comfortable with what it is that particular team has to do to be successful in qualifying.”
Do you enjoy competing at Atlanta Motor Speedway?
”Atlanta is one of my favorite racetracks. I really enjoy going there and I’m excited about running there this year. It’s one of those places where I think we have a good shot of winning. To me, it’s a great challenge. The difference between qualifying and racing there is so big. The track gets so slick during the race and becomes a blast to drive on. You have to get up on the wheel and drive the car. It’s so much fun. As a race car driver, that’s the kind of racing you hope for.”
Are there things you can learn at Atlanta that you can apply to other race tracks?
“I think so. There are things that we can learn from each race track and apply them to other race tracks more so than others. Some tracks have a bigger impact than others but I think a lot.”

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
What are your thoughts on the new surface at Bristol Motor Speedway?
“I thought the new surface was really good. The Cup Series race didn’t yield the same kind of race the Truck and Nationwide races yielded and I don’t know why, but it will. If you want to go to a race to watch the wrecks, you probably won’t like the new surface as much. If you want to watch a better race with more action and true side-by-side racing, with guys passing each other instead of wrecking others, then you’ll like the new surface. I think the new track is going to provide better racing and add more excitement. I’m a huge fan of the new surface and it’s a step in the right direction, for sure.”
Are you concerned that the top groove didn’t work during last season’s fall race after the track was re-surfaced?
“Anytime you get the opportunity to run (a groove) somewhere else, you’re going to figure out how to do that. It’s a whole lot easier to drive on the outside than it is to move guys out of the way. During the Nationwide race, I was able to run the top groove and we were wicked fast. So, I did that in my Cup car, too. We were really fast during Friday’s practice. I was running the high line and everything was good. But for half the race, I was trying to make that work and I had to give up on it. Once I gave up on it, we got good and up through the pack we started coming. I don’t know why it happened but it did and it won’t stay like that for long.”
Assess your late-race battle with Kyle Busch and overall performance in last year’s race.
“We ran really well there. The AT&T Chevy was good on long runs and we caught the strategy right. Scott Miller did a great job calling the race and got us in position to win. We missed a win by half a car length but we ran well and I think we learned a lot. Now the track is different so we have to re-learn everything but we feel good about where we are.”
From a driver’s standpoint, what are your thoughts on this weekend’s race?
“You are going to have to trust the fact that the racing is going to be better at Bristol, better than it’s ever been. The race will be very competitive and will be more exciting. We learned a lot about the Impala SS and the best races are ahead of us.”
