FONTANA, Calif. - Hendrick Motorsports' Jeff Gordon led the afternoon NASCAR Sprint Cup test session at California Speedway Thursday.

Gordon paced the field with a fast lap of 180.505 mph. Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards was second with a lap of 179.888 mph.

The teams can test again tonight for a third session and return to the track Friday. There are five sessions during the two-day test, but drivers can only compete in four of them.

Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann, Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Mark Martin and Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five.

Hamlin was sixth fastest in his second car, followed by Hendrick's Dale Earnhardt Jr., Yates Racing's David Gilliland, Gillett Evernham Motorsports' Kasey Kahne and Penske Racing's Kurt Busch.
