"Obviously, we were very disappointed with the way things turned out in Daytona, but we knew going in the possibility existed that we wouldn't make the show. We can't spend a lot of time dwelling on it. We can only make sure that when we show up in California, we don't have the same result. This is a good race team; there's no doubt about that, and there were bound to be hiccups along the way. Hopefully, we got ours out of the way early, and we can get to Fontana and get things started in the right direction. We tested the 360 OTC car we're taking in Las Vegas, so we know we have a good Toyota Camry for this weekend. We just have to make sure we stick to the fundamentals and get ourselves a good qualifying run and make the show. There's absolutely no reason why we wouldn't be able to do that. We have everything it takes."

Jeremy Mayfield on Atlanta Motor Speedway…

“Last weekend was a tough one. The season has been a tough one, but last weekend we were really disappointed in the outcome because we never gave ourselves the opportunity to make the race. There are over 50 full-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup teams that show up every weekend now, and it’s tough enough when you get beat fair and square by them, but when you show up and beat yourselves, that’s when you can’t help but angry and disappointed in yourselves. The good news was, of course, that our 360 OTC Toyota Camry was quick enough to make the show, so all is not lost. We know what the problem was last week, and we know it’s not going to happen again. We’re aware of what we are struggling with and what we can do to fix it. The No. 22 team has been strong in qualifying and our teams work really well together, so when we get to Atlanta this weekend we know that we have just as good as shot of being there to race on Sunday as everyone else.”

Wink Jeremy Mayfield Post-Coca-Cola 600 Recap

Bill Davis Racing, Press Release

CONCORD, N.C. (May 29, 2007) – After making great strides last weekend during the Nextel Cup All-Star weekend, Jeremy Mayfield and the 360 Racing team looked forward to their return to the 1.5-mile track. Mayfield, who celebrated his 38th birthday Sunday, qualified his No. 36 Bill Davis Racing entry in the 24th spot for the running of the Coca-Cola 600 and spent much of the evening in the top 15 before engine problems late in the race relegated the team to a 25th-place finish.

Standing outside the top 35 in points, qualifying is always a bit stressful for the team, but after a successful test session several weeks ago and their performance last weekend, Mayfield and the crew hoped they had this one in the bag. The first of 49 competitors to take to the track for his two-lap qualifying run, Mayfield made his way around the track at an average speed of 182.303 miles per hour and landed his 360 OTC Toyota Camry solidly in the field for Sunday evening’s event.

Mayfield lined up on the starting grid in the 24th spot and wasted no time making his way toward the front of the field, breaking into the top 15 by lap 45 of the 400-lap event. Mayfield communicated to his crew that his Camry was tight going into the corners and loose off. Interim crew chief Tommy Baldwin made plans to make an air pressure adjustment during the first pit stop, which came on lap 49. Mayfield returned to the track for the lap 52 restart in 15th place.

Mayfield fell back slightly near the lap-80 mark as the car became tighter, but rallied back to his spot in the top 15 by lap 100. Breaking into the top 10 just 17 laps later, Mayfield let his team know that the car was one of the best he’d driven in a long time. Mayfield went one lap down to the leader just before a caution flag flew on lap 141 and was the beneficiary of the lucky dog pass during that caution, putting him back on the lead lap. After making a pit stop for four tires and fuel on lap 144, Mayfield lined up for the restart in the 14th position. It wasn’t long before Mayfield once again radioed to his crew that the car was great and broke back into the top 10.

Mayfield was posting some of the quickest times on the track and running in eighth when a yellow flag flew on lap 252. Baldwin made the decision to take on only fuel during the ensuing stop and Mayfield was the first car out of the pits. The No. 36 car led laps 253-256 before falling several spots to cars with fresher tires, but remained within sight of the leaders. Mayfield made an impressive save after he lost control of his car coming off turn four on lap 290. After sliding through the frontstretch grass and spinning back out on the track, Mayfield gathered it together before hitting anything and drove to the attention of his crew on lap 292. The crew made several stops to repair very minor fender damage and sent their driver back out on the track in 11th.

Mayfield and the 360 OTC team were gearing up for their best finish of the season when smoke began rising from their Toyota Camry on lap 383. Ducking into the pits, the team went under the hood to diagnose the problem and, after assessing the situation, pushed the car to the garage, cutting their evening shirt. Mayfield was credited with a 25th place finish.

The Nextel Cup Series next travels to The Monster Mile in Dover, Del. for the running of the Autism Speaks 400 Sunday afternoon. Qualifying for the event will be held Friday and Sunday’s race is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. ET start. The race will be broadcast on FOX, MRN Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. The 360 OTC Racing team plans to spend Tuesday testing at North Carolina Speedway in preparation for this weekend’s event.

Exclamation Jeremy Mayfield leaving Bill Davis Racing at end of season

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Jeremy Mayfield will not return to Bill Davis Racing next season, the team said Wednesday.
Mayfield joined BDR this year as the team expanded to two cars, but he's struggled to make races and has only qualified for eight of the 21 events this season.

"Jeremy has done all we asked of him and more as part of what has been an enormous challenge in 2007 for the entire BDR Cup program," team owner Bill Davis said.

This season has been difficult for all new teams, particularly the Toyotas who have to earn their spots in the field and adjust to both a new car and the Car of Tomorrow.

Davis said the adjustments were the main reasons why Mayfield has struggled.

"It has been a huge undertaking to bring Toyota online for their first season at the same time all the teams in the sport were facing the dual competition platforms as we transitioned to the Car of Tomorrow," he said.

"Add to that the challenge of facing the healthiest overall car count in years ... and it has made for some trying times for all involved."

Mayfield's No. 36 Camry team was new for 2007 and did not have a guaranteed starting spot in the first five races of the season because it was outside the top 35 in owner points. After missing the first four races of the year, Mayfield never could get in the top 35.

Mayfield also has gone through several crew chief changes this year as the team searched for the right chemistry.

"I've been in this sport long enough to know that it takes time to bring a brand new car up to speed in what is probably the most competitive racing series in the world," Mayfield said. "When I made the decision to move here to BDR with an untested car and a sponsor completely unfamiliar with NASCAR, I knew it would be somewhat of a gamble.

"I believed then, and I believe now, that Toyota has a bright future in the Cup series and is making progress every weekend. But I think I have delivered what I can to the effort and looking at the total picture — what's best for me, what's best for the team — I believe this is the right time for me to consider other opportunities."

No replacement driver was named.

Digg it del.icio.us AIM Mayfield's future now in limbo
Driver looking to revitalize his career

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – A year ago, Jeremy Mayfield had lawyers in a Statesville, N.C., courtroom trying to save his Nextel Cup ride with Evernham Motorsports.

Now, he’s trying to save his career.

Mayfield, 38, announced last week he would bring a quick close to his troubled tenure at Bill Davis Racing at season’s end and seek a new ride for the second time in a year.

The five-time Cup winner’s bitter falling out with team owner Ray Evernham last year and the struggles of this season at BDR – his No. 36 Toyota team has qualified for nine of 22 races – have taken their toll.

When qualifying was canceled Friday because of bad weather, Mayfield squeaked into the field for Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen at Watkins Glen International through tiebreaker provisions in the rulebook.

With opportunities slim this season to perform in races, Mayfield knows any time on the track is precious if he is going to try to restart his career one more time.

“It’s not a good feeling when you have to go home and miss a race, especially after last year when I missed several races with Ray’s deal which I had no intentions of ever doing – that was his doing,” Mayfield said.

“I sat home then. I was excited about this year and then we missed the first four races. Man, that just makes you feel like ‘out of sight, out of mind’ and if you’re not careful, you’ll be forgotten about in this business.”

Such a proposition seemed ridiculous when Mayfield burst onto the Cup scene with his first win in 1998 with Penske-Kranefuss Racing and led the series points for several weeks before finishing a career-best seventh.

He won two more races in 2000, including his second Pocono victory that included the now-famous bump-and-run pass of the late Dale Earnhardt on the last lap. Mayfield seemed poised for greatness.

By the next season, Mayfield’s run with Penske had soured and he left the organization before the end of the year. He rejoined the series in 2002 with Evernham’s Dodge team but struggled from the start.

Although Mayfield won two races with Evernham – including a victory in 2004 that allowed him to qualify for the first Chase for the Nextel Cup – his tenure at the organization was rocky and by last summer the turmoil landed both men in court.

Evernham wanted to replace Mayfield in the No. 19 Dodge at Watkins Glen, but Mayfield sought an injunction to prevent the change. In court documents filed at the time, Mayfield alleged Evernham was an absentee owner distracted by his “close personal relationship” with his development driver, Erin Crocker.

Ultimately, the matter was settled out of court, but again Mayfield was left without a team. Starting over with BDR, along with new manufacturer Toyota, was to be his second chance. Now he seeks a third.

“You have this path in life where you’re kind of wild to start with and you don’t really know what’s going on – you see that with a lot of young drivers that come in here,” Mayfield said. “Now I feel like I’ve matured in my personal life and I want to go racing and race to have fun.

“That’s what I love to do most and I hope I get that opportunity again because I certainly appreciate it a lot more now than I did at any other point in my life.”

Make no mistake, Mayfield has regrets.

“If I had a dream team, I’d go back to my No. 12 car days at Penske. I wish I had that opportunity now,” he said. “There were a lot of things that happened, things between (Michael) Kranefuss and Roger (Penske) and me not getting along with Rusty (Wallace).

“As a driver I could have done a lot of things differently. I wish I had that opportunity over again and I definitely wouldn’t be leaving there, I can tell you that.”

Smile Jeremy Mayfield Dickies 500 NNCS Race Preview

GMR Live Marketing For Best Buy Racing, Press Release

MOST RECENT RACE AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY:

In the April, 2007, race at Texas Motor Speedway, driver Jeff Green and the No. 66 Haas CNC Racing team fought a tight handling condition for most of the day.
The handling issues caused Green to eventually go two laps down to the race leaders, and his Best Buy Racing team finished the event in 26th position.

CHASSIS – Haas CNC Racing Chassis No. 028 –

New to the Haas CNC Racing stable this season, this chassis is the same car Jeff Green drove at both Pocono Raceway races this season, as well as both Michigan (International Speedway) events. Green posted a 19th-place finish with this car at Pocono Raceway in August and a 22nd-place finish at Michigan two weeks later, then finished 23rd with this chassis at California Speedway in September. Most recently, Green finished 32nd with this chassis at Lowe’s Motor Speedway three weeks ago.

Q&A WITH DRIVER JEREMY MAYFIELD:

After your first week with the team, how do you feel about how everything is going so far?

“I’m really happy. I feel like I’m in a really good position with a team that’s on the rise. Obviously we’re disappointed with how we qualified and finished this past weekend, but Harold (Holly, crew chief) and I learned a lot about each other and how to speak each other’s language in terms of how the car is handling, so it was a great learning experience for the both of us. “After we wrecked on Sunday, I spent a lot of time talking to Matt (Borland, Haas CNC Racing’s competition director) in the garage while the team was working on the car, talking with him about how the car was handling. He’s a really smart guy, and he was just absorbing everything I was telling him and gathering information to make the car better at Texas. There are really good people on the team, and Matt is really working hard to take everyone to the next level.
“As I said last week, we all know success is not going to come overnight, but we’ll just keep working and making gains on it and doing our best to get better every week, and we’ll get there. I have no doubt about that.”

Q&A WITH CREW CHIEF HAROLD HOLLY:

How did you feel about your first race with a new driver?

“Well, it definitely wasn’t what we were looking for in terms of a good finish or even a good starting spot, but I was very pleased with how the team performed during the race. Our pit crew turned some of their fastest pit stops of the season. We had a couple of four-tire stops that were under 13 seconds and helped us gain some spots coming out of the pits, so I’m very proud of the job they did on pit road.

“As far as Jeremy, I’m enjoying getting to know him. We’re still just feeling out the situation, figuring out how he likes his cars to handle and getting on the same page, but he’s been great to deal with and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and 2008. There’s no doubt the guy’s a talented driver. We just need to get a little more time together under our belts and I think we’ll see some really great things.”

JEREMY MAYFIELD’S HISTORY AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY:

In 11 NEXTEL Cup Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway, driver Jeremy Mayfield has four finishes of 20th or better, including two top-10’s and one top-five. Both of Mayfield’s top-10 runs came while driving the No. 12 entry for team owner Michael Kranefuss. Mayfield’s best finish was a fifth-place run in the March, 1999, event, and his best starting position came one year earlier, when he started on the pole in the March, 1998, race at Texas.

HAAS CNC RACING’S HISTORY AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY:

In eight Nextel Cup Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway, the Haas CNC Racing team scored its best starting spot in April, 2006, when Jeff Green qualified fourth. The team’s best finish at Texas came in this race one year ago, when Green finished 13th.

Smile Skog named Mayfield crew chief

By DAVID POOLE
dpoole@charlotteobserver.com

Jeremy Mayfield has a new crew chief at Haas CNC Racing. Dave Skog has been named to lead the No. 66 team.

Skog, 41, has been head of the team's engineering department. He'll take over for veteran crew chief Harold Holly, who is leaving the team.

Skog, who is from Canada, has been Mayfield's crew chief before. They worked together in 2002 when Mayfield drove the No. 19 Dodge owned by Ray Evernham.

Mayfield took over as driver for the No. 66 team at Atlanta late in the 2007 Nextel Cup season. The team finished 31st in owner points, so the No. 66 is guaranteed starting spots in the first five races on 2008.

"Dave's tenacity for learning the car of tomorrow was a huge factor in our early success with that program," said Joe Custer, the team's general manager. "He has firmly established himself as a leader in our organization."
