DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- Juan Pablo Montoya was fined and placed on probation Wednesday for making an inappropriate gesture last Thursday during a NASCAR Busch Series practice session at Phoenix International Raceway.

Montoya received a $10,000 fine and is on probation until December 31 for violating Section 12-4-A of the Busch Series rule book, which classified his gesture as "detrimental to stock car racing."

A former Indianapolis 500 winner and Formula One star, Montoya has gotten off to an inconsistent start in the Busch Series, winning the road-course race at Mexico City but finishing 20th or worse in five of his eight starts. The Colombian currently is 17th in the series points standings.

Montoya also is running the full Nextel Cup circuit and has one top-five finish and two top-10s in NASCAR's premier series.

From my understanding the gesture was unintentionaly caught on a live in car camera while sitting on pit row during practice? Sure sounds like he was caught goofin off as he has stated. Maybe someone will explain to him that he is now in the public eye much more than ever before and that he should act appropriatly.
I do think its right he and any other public figure/pro athlete/etc should be punished or fined for displays of inapropriate behavior. I personaly am sick and tired of seeing that kind of thing in public.

Juan Pablo Montoya flipps the bird to a camera man heading to Busch practice...not good for him...im pretty sure Chip is REAL happy right now.

Fined 10K and on probation....for God knows how long.

Don't you think it makes him look a WHOLE lot better as a driver? NOT!

Just goes to show you once again JPM doesn't get it! This is NASCAR and he isn't very popular with real NASCAR fans and never will be if he keeps up his irrational tactics. He is arrogant, selfish and will never be a team player. It's all about Jaun and I don't wanna hear his name over and over again like we hear it every weekend. He has a lot to learn and should start with manners. He may want to consider going back Formla one before it's too late and he really get's himself into big trouble with NASCAR, his teammates and the fans. Just my opinion.
