That shouldnt be a big deal. Driving that slow, and holding onto the kid. The letting him get air part is kinda dumb, but she shouldnt get child abuse.

Boy, 14, selling candles for charity robbed at gunpoint

06:00 PM CDT on Thursday, August 7, 2008

By DAVID SCHECHTER / WFAA-TV

A 14-year-old boy is recovering after robbers punched him unconscious, as he sold candles for charity.

Nearby, an off-duty police officer saw it all and came to his defense.

The soft-spoken 14-year-old was working at his summer job: selling candles for a kids' cancer charity.

"He's a very good kid," said his mother.

Sometimes he spends his modest earnings on his mother.

"Once and a while, I take her out, you know," he said.

Yesterday afternoon he tried to sell a candle to a man at a gas station who grabbed his money.

He's afraid of retaliation - so we'll call him George.

"He was trying to take $8," he said.

In exchange for those $8 - the man knocked George out.

"He's a kid. He hit him like a man," his mother said.

A Dallas police officer saw the incident from the restaurant next door.

He ran over and arrested the robber.

"He came running. He stuck his gun out. He pointed it at the guy and guy, like surrendered," said the boy.

Two friends in a black truck drove away.

George spent the rest of the day in hospital but not before the officer got George's $8 from the robber and gave them back to him.

Urine bottles: Another result of high fuel prices?
By Associated Press

ONTARIO, Ore. -- Police say there's been an alarming rise in urine-filled plastic containers found along a three-mile stretch of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon.

A litter crew for the Oregon Department of Transportation picked up an estimated 200-300 urine filled plastic bottles, along the highway, about half of which were found in a short stretch dubbed "Three Mile Hill."

Police say that drivers - particularly commercial trucks - are typically driving very slowly through the area.

Police think the price of fuel may be causing drivers to travel slower than normal to save fuel while at the same time passing rest areas or truck stops.

Under Oregon law, improperly disposing of human waste is a misdemeanor which can carry a fine of up to $250.

Groom charged with being too near bride at wedding

BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York state man has been arrested for getting too close to his bride on their wedding day. Police said Timothy Cole quarreled with a wedding guest at a party Friday after wedding his ex-wife in Batavia.

Officers knew the 45-year-old Cole from previous arrests and realized his bride had an order of protection against him. Cole was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, and ordered jailed without bail.

The Daily News in Batavia says Cole was convicted of criminal contempt on July 1.

The Genesee County public defender's office says Cole hasn't been assigned an attorney.

Man says he's porn inspector, demands free videos

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) -- A man claiming to be a police detective tried to get an adult novelty shop to give him free X-rated videos, saying he wanted to make sure the performers weren't underage, authorities said.

He made three tries within nine days last month and was turned down each time. The store manager called police after the third try.

Authorities said Monday that the man showed a badge and left a business card from the Longmont police "age verification unit." Cmdr. Tim Lewis said there is no such unit.

"It was inventive on his part, I'll give him that," Lewis said.

The business card didn't have anyone's name on it, but the store gave officers surveillance video of the man. Police are looking for him.

Gas pump malfunction sells premium for 38 cents

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Gas prices have been falling - but not that much. A problem with a pump cost a San Antonio convenience store when premium gasoline accidentally sold for 38 cents a gallon. Manager Jim Duke at a Dill Food Market says that grade of gas was supposed to be selling for $3.89 a gallon.

Duke says the "pump malfunction" involving a misplaced decimal point was fixed by Wednesday afternoon.

Nobody reported the mistake, which WOAI-AM reported apparently started Tuesday afternoon.

Duke said he noticed a lot of vehicles were being filled with premium and people were paying at the pump. He went out to check Wednesday and noticed the price error.

Duke said the independent gas station lost a lot of money. Just how much is still being tallied.

Police: Girl, 12, drove mom to bar

08:19 PM CDT on Thursday, August 14, 2008

Associated Press

LONGVIEW, Texas - A Texas mother remained in jail Thursday after police said she made her 12-year-old daughter drive her to a bar.

Jennifer Lynn Rosenburg was arrested Wednesday and accused of child endangerment.

Police stopped a minivan Wednesday that had turned into a driveway without using a turn signal and then ran into the home at a low speed. The driver was Rosenburg's 12-year-old daughter, who said she had just dropped off her mother at a bar, police said.

Police found Rosenburg, 35, at the bar, and she admitted having her daughter drive her there, according to a police report.

She remained in the Gregg County Jail on Thursday night on a $2,500 bond. A jail official declined to say whether she had an attorney.

Child Protective Services is investigating, spokeswoman Shari Pulliam said in a story on the Longview News-Journal's Web site Thursday.

Police: Texas robber locks keys in getaway car

11:26 PM CDT on Thursday, August 14, 2008

Associated Press

STANTON, Texas - Memo to anyone planning a drug store robbery: don't lock your keys in the getaway vehicle.

Police said John Wilkinson, 24, of Big Spring, did just that after he allegedly robbed the Stanton Drug Store of Zanax and hydrocodine with what was later found to be a caulking gun.

They said Wilkinson used the caulking gun, wrapped in a dark cloth, to get the drugs Thursday afternoon.

Afterward, he allegedly headed back to his vehicle, which was parked and running in front of the drug store, and discovered he was locked out, the Midland Reporter-Telegram reported in its online edition Thursday.

Stanton Police Chief Mike Adams said Wilkinson then tried to get away on foot. Police, who thought he had a gun, shot him in the top of his shoulder during the short chase.

Wilkinson was treated at the Midland Memorial Hospital and taken to the Martin County Jail on a charge of armed robbery. A jail official said late Thursday he did not know whether Wilkinson had an attorney.

No bond had been set.
