Race Results question

I'm a NASCAR newbie, and I have a question:

How can a guy finish "out of the race" but still place ahead of folks still "running"? Earnhart got 60 points yesterday, even though I thought he went to the garage -- did he drive another car?

forgive my ignorance.

Thanks!

But unless I missed something, I don't think that post addresses my question.

your answer is

Jr ended up driving the #5 car...after they both crashed, Busch apparently left the track, thinking he was done for the day...They got his car back up and running and so JR ended up in it...Kinda funny since Busch is the one that took him out...don't you think???

Points are awarded for the finishing position, which are listed in that post. It is very conceivable that a car could have a DNF (did not finish) and still get more points than a car that is still running at the end, but laps down. You also have to add in the bonus points for leading a lap, etc. It's all in the math!

Here is another way to look at it. Each finishing position has a point value. The finishing position is determined by the number of laps completed. A car can wreck, say after completing 200 laps and be so damaged it can no longer run. This car is still ahead of any cars running that have completed less than 200 laps, even if they are still running they are still behind the broken car until they surpass 200 laps.

Jr didn't get any extra points for driving the #5 for Kyle Bush. Bush got a better finish and more points because of Jr.

race finish

I wonder if Jr driving a HENDRICK car will weigh in with his future? On Nascar.com he states that it was a really good car..Seems like he enjoyed driving the 5 car. He may realize there is other options if Teresa don't give in..............

Junior has more potential than DEI can offer IMO, kinda sad because you know Dale Sr. would have made way more of DEI than has been done since his passing. For Jr's sake I hope he gets controlling interest or goes somewhere where he can reach his potential.
