NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Joe Gibbs will retire as coach and president of the Washington Redskins today, according to a story on the football team's Web site. A news conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
According to the story posted on redskins.com, Gibbs will leave with one year remaining on his contract. He will not entirely leave the organization, though, but instead will serve as a special adviser to owner Daniel M. Snyder.
Gibbs, who owns Joe Gibbs Racing and its three NASCAR Sprint Cup teams, returned to coach the team in 2004 after an 11-year absence. He has gone 31-36 since then, with two playoff appearances.
According to the Web site, Gibbs met with the players Sunday, a day after they were eliminated from the playoffs. In a news conference Monday, he said that he would make a decision on his coaching future.
"I just think it was a hard year for all of us," says the story posted on the site. "It was the toughest for me. It may be hard for people to understand, but when you go through a season like that, for a while it's kind of hard to regrasp reality.
"I think it was good for me to go home and see my grandkids last night."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kyle Busch said he was surprised by Joe Gibbs' decision to step down as coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins, but the new Joe Gibbs Racing driver said it can only help the race team.
Busch is in his first year with JGR, having signed with the team last year after spending his entire NASCAR career with Hendrick Motorsports.
"I knew he had one more year left [on his contract], so I figured he was going to keep digging," Busch said of Gibbs' tenure with the Redskins. "I don't know what his decision process was about retiring, but I'm sure it'll be for the better of Joe Gibbs Racing."
Gibbs' son J.D. has served as president of the race team since 2004, when Joe returned to the Redskins. But Busch said the potential of having Joe Gibbs back around the race team would be beneficial.
"I think it would be pretty cool," Busch said. "[Crew chief Steve] Addington told me early today that whenever you really need something or want something, you'd just go to Joe, and he's like, 'Fine, do whatever you need. We'll figure out a way to pay for it later.' That will pay dividends for us, just being able to go out there and get what we need when we need it.
"All in all, having Joe playing a bigger role in the race team's always nice. J.D. does a great job with it, but it's not like having Joe Gibbs around to run this organization."
Busch said he hasn't had much contact with Joe Gibbs, other than in contract negotiations and an occasional phone call.
"J.D.'s who I go to all the time," Busch said. "I hate to bother Joe. Of course, he's hard to get a hold of sometimes with all the Redskins stuff. But with all that out of the way now, it's going to be easier to get a hold of Joe and get with him. I think it's going to be nice. I think it's going to work out good."

I think you could be right Honcho! With JGR being the "flagship" for Toyota and the "old man" back at the helm, JGR will be coming on strong!
I still think it will be fun to watch the 3 hissy-fit throwin' drivers as team mates!
