Martin Truex Jr. and the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops team are entering their third season at NASCAR’s highest level. The Dale Earnhardt Inc. team looks to build on the success it enjoyed last season, winning at Dover in June, and securing a place in the 12-car Chase for the Championship.
Truex, along with crew chief Kevin Manion and the rest of the Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats team, enjoyed a remarkable season in 2007. Not only did they capture their first win at the Sprint Cup level, but also won their first pole position at Texas Motor Speedway in November. Truex would go on to finish a career-best 11 th in the final point standings.
Martin began his early racing days in go-karts, before moving through the ranks to the Busch North Series at a successful rate. His dad, Martin Truex Sr., was already an established driver in the BNS and Truex Jr. followed right along. Truex Sr. toured on the North Series for awhile and executed one of the most selfless acts a father could by giving up his own ride so his son could further his racing career.
It all paid off when Truex was offered a job driving a part-time Busch season for Chance 2 Motorsports out of DEI in 2003. By 2004, Truex was rewarded a full-time ride with Chance 2 and went on to win back-to-back Busch Championships and 12 wins over the next two seasons. In addition, Truex was named the division’s Most Popular Driver.
The team made its move to Nextel Cup in 2006, coming on strong at the end of the season and finishing with two top-five and five top-10 finishes, including a second-place result in the season finale at Homestead .
