Advice For Race Day

Nascar Space members - your help is needed and will be deeply appreciated!

I am about to start planning my very first race trip and I am at a loss as to just what I am doing. I am planning to stay at the track, camping in an RV. I have heard too many horror stories about the long and congested trip to and from the track. I am planning to go to the spring race in Atlanta. I want to see the qualifying and the truck race on Friday, then stalk some drivers on Saturday, and watch the Cup race on Sunday.

Any help you can give me would be oh so helpful. I am taking my daughter and ex with me and they are not race fans. So the planning and all is totally up to me. I need to know everything, so please don't hold back any info you can share about attending the races.

Do we need ear protection? Can I rent a scanner at the track? Is the FanScan worth the money?

I am taking advantage of this empty forum at this time to try to get some information, not only for me. I have noticed that a lot of our members have said that this would be the first race for them this year too.

Please step forward and help us new-to-the-racetrack-members out!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

DRIV3R # 88 will become famous soon enoughDRIV3R # 88 will become famous soon enough
when u get there, u can rent Nextel fanview for $50 a day, or $75 for the weekend, its the yellow hand held tv, its worth it, def for the cup race

u will need ear plugs since its ur first time, after u have had ur cherry popped, u'll be ok, lol

if u need the most up to date souveniers, go to the driver trailers, but if u dont mind having last season's stuff, go to the privately owned trailers that are usually close by, this is good especially for the jackets, one from the current trailer is usually $200, last year's will be $75

If this was the 1950's, Jeff Gordon would be Pat Boone and Dale Jr. would be Elvis....both were great singers, but we know who had the most fans.

You're in for a heck of a treat!

I would bring earplugs or ear cups... I prefer the cups as the plugs bug my ears after a couple of hours but that's a personal thing.

You can get scanners at the track but FanScan is much cooler! Although there can be some issues with screen vision in high sunlight conditions. I have my own scanner but I'll leave it at home if I can get FS.

SHOES! If you're gonna be out there for the weekend.. bring at least 2 pairs of your most comfortable shoes and swap them often.

Look at the weather forcast and be ready for temps 20 degrees on either side of the prediction. Also be ready for rain. I have a light rain shell that I always have in my track bag.

Make Friends with the RVs on either side of you and maybe across the way. They can help keep an eye on your stuff while you're away.

Pick up a copy of the program and usually the local paper will have daily track editions. They'll help you plan where you want to be and at what times for the many events at the track.

Pack suncreen, lip balm, and lots of your favorite pain reliever. You're gonna be sore & headache prone. Nice to have that stuff on tap. Also I throw some waterless hand cleaner and a half dozen paper towels in my track bag.

If you are planning on eating track food, try to hit the concessions at off times cause the lines can be unmanagable at peak times.

You cannot plan for too much comfort... the days will be long but they will be fun-packed!

When you get your Atlanta tickets there will be a card/pamphlet with entry/exit routes on it SAVE IT tape it to the dash or something. Its very helpful and can save you ALOT of time in traffic. By the way AMS has the new entry road ( four lanes in four lanes out ) to and from I-75 in use now, the traffic HORROR stories of years past getting in and out of AMS are a thing of the past! Yeeeeeaahhh!
Have Fun! Atlanta is a great spectator race and Tony Stewart hauls there.......Ryan does ok too.

P.S. weather for the spring race is always an unkown be prepared for anything.

I've never used the FanScan. But the Scanners are nice. I have a scanner that acutally doesn't display the frequencies, it displays the drivers names by number. its excellant since you can scroll through all of them. I believe you can also buy a three way splitter. You will have a great time. I wouldn't worry to much about getting there. You wont miss anything if you get there friday morning!!

Rent some kind of fan scanner. They have different kinds you can get. I would get Nextel FanView, to me that is the best one.

Since it is your first time, you will need ear plugs, cause if you don't, the loud sounds are gonna hurt your ears alot. Those engines are louder than it looks.

I would bring a back up pair of shoes.

Be ready for the weather. In Atlanta, one day it can be 65 degrees and the next day its in the 30's. So make sure you bring proper clothing.

You are going to need sunscreen just in case it's a sunny day. Sitting in the sun for 3-4 hours is a good way to get a sunburn.

The concession lines are usually packed, especially around pre-race time. But as H8Gordon said, I would do it at off times so you don't have to wait in a long line, risking the chance to miss the start of the race.

The souveniers are a good way to stay updated.

You can't avoid the traffic, if you leave for the track early or late, the traffic will be bad. So I would leave early to get you some extra time in case the traffic is really bad.

If you are wanting autographs, some of the drivers will sign them if you ask them. But ask them politely.

The main thing is to prepare properly. Bring coats, proper clothes, sunscreen, etc and you should be good. Make sure you reserve a spot for Monday incase the race gets rained out. Nothin like paying money and not seeing a race.
