In 1984 Rick Hendrick formed his First Cup team the #5 ( originaly the All Stars Racing team ) With Geoff Bodine driving they won three races that year and has gone on to win 20 more ( including my favorite the " Last Southern 500 " in 2003 with Terry Labonte at the wheel. One Cup Championship in 1996 with Terry Labonte. The late Ricky Hendricks, Rick Hendrick son also drove the 5 car in the Busch series from 2001-2003, Brian Vickers won 3 races and the Busch series title in 2003 ( with Ricky Hendrick listed as co-owner ), Kyle Busch has also won at least 2 races in the 5 Busch car.
Seems to me Rick Hendrick has a few reasons to hang onto the #5.

Even if he gets to keep the number 8, it will be a different style 8. Hendrick style (yellow baby)....and the car sponsor will probably change also, so no more red nation.
I hear Pepsi is gonna be Junior's main sponsor next year....for around $25 million.
