Furthermore, the commentators of the Amp Energy 500 said that passing on the last lap below the yellow line is LEGAL on the last lap, and Regan Smith said the same thing during the post race interview.

That was Smith's ONLY shot at a win. A bunch of cars staying in one place in a long line IS NOT RACING! It is NOT competition!

What happened at the conclusion of the Amp Energy 500 is another example of how the CoT and NASCAR's awful and sometimes inconsistent rules has marred the sport.

Regan Smith should have won.
I agree with Spagnum. You musta been watchign something else, then tuned into the last 2 laps for the talladega race. What u missed was all the good plate racers and drafters got taken out due to edwards stupidity. It was mostly rookies up front and if not, then it was the guys who are less of a plate racer and more intermediate tracks. That whole race was 2x2 and 3x3. The last 2 laps were the only laps that had just single file racing. Dont comment unless you saw the whole thing.

I agree. This was really not one of the best Dega races I have seen. ESPECIALLY when no one is supposed to race Mr Stewart on the last lap!

So your saying Regan Smith should have not avoided a terrible accident??

I mean LORD, we still have to think about safety, Tony TRIED to run Regan off the road, and swerved HARD to the left to BLINDLY either cut Regan off, or side swipe him.

Nascar is corrupt.. Regan WON, but Tony was GIVEN the race, he did not have what it takes to actually win it hands down.

So just strip it away from someone else and give it to Tony.

Ford and Chevy sandbagged through the reg season, and now are at full throddle..
Toyota does not have what it takes to Win at Daytona or get a cup championship..

Just in case you missed those facts...... oh, and I think it's a little much to EXPECT Toyota to win the Cup championship the very first year they're in, although they certainly proved this year they were capable of being competitive for it...

Im pretty sure the rule says the only reason you can go below the line "ever" is if youre forced there or avoiding an incident. You can never pass below the line even if youre forced there. At least thats my understanding. Think about it like being forced out of bounds in football, you can't keep running down the sidelines and score a touchdown can you? same situation. I dont agree with the guy getting 18th or whatever, thats kind of lame.

NASCAR statement on 01's pass below the yellow line

NASCAR statement on 01's pass below the yellow line

By Official Release
October 6, 2008
04:26 PM EDT

At Sunday's drivers' meeting, NASCAR reiterated the rule about passing under the yellow line and provided the same information to all drivers and crew chiefs in a hand out, as it has done in past Daytona and Talladega races.
The verbatim language is ...
This is your warning: race above the yellow line. If, in NASCAR's judgment, you go below the yellow line to improve your position, you will be black-flagged. If in NASCAR's judgment you force someone below the yellow line (in an effort to stop him from passing you), you may be black-flagged.
"During the last lap of [Sunday's] race at Talladega Superspeedway the driver of the No. 01 violated NASCAR policy by driving under the yellow line to improve his position," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. "In NASCAR's opinion he was not forced below the yellow line. NASCAR correctly took immediate action to enforce the policy by penalizing the No. 01 and scoring the No. 20 as the race winner.

Helton concluded by saying ...
"Since the end of the race there has been some confusion as to what is allowable during the last lap at Daytona and Talladega. To be clear, as we go forward, there will be no passing under the yellow line at any time during NASCAR races at Daytona or Talladega, period. This includes any passing below the yellow line near the start/finish line on the final lap."

Did Helton and the rest of the NA$CAR officials really watch the same race as the rest of us?

here is my opinion on the race...first off, it was a great race..a few mishaps but it was still a very good race..second, i believe that regan smith should of won the race...yes he went below the yellow line but he was clearly forced below it...when he faked high and then darted low, tony went down to block him but he forced him down there...if regan smith didnt move when tony came down, they would of wrecked the whole field...so what did regan do? went below the yellow line..and got penalized for it..and tony....was given the victory...
nascar gave it to tony because he is a veteran driver who hasnt won in awhile...are they going to do this everytime someone different (who never has won a race) is about to beat a veteran? and also..by placing smith in 18th place is bull..he didnt have time to give back the position even if he did do something wrong..nascar should of placed him 2nd..well he sould of won the darn race.

You know its the same arguments that everyone is making. Some think he was forced down, and others think he went below it on his own. I really really wish Tony got in that wreck...and the guy that ended up winning the race was...Dale Jr!! That would be very interesting to see what everyones opinions would be. And Stephanie. maybe you shoulda posted that statement in the thread I made about getting sick of people saying nascar has favorites! Awarding him the win because he is a veteran and hasnt won in awhile? Nascar does not have favorites and is not rigged. They try to make the correct decisions. Srry if they arent perfect every single time. Maybe you should become the president of the sport.
