If you listen to the drivers and the owners, there are no team orders, it still every driver for himself. Single car teams can compete in this sport, perfect example is Robby Gordon, he had a good finish in the Daytona. But that being said, even the small teams now have some type of an affiliation with the multi or super teams.

Here is a snippet from an article about the Robby Gordon/ GEM affiliation:

Gillett Evernham Motorsports today announced a technical, manufacturing and marketing services agreement with Robby Gordon Motorsports which will race Dodges in the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Gordon’s team will use Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodge engines when practice begins next week at Daytona International Speedway. BAM Racing and Petty Enterprises also use Gillett Evernham Motorsports engines and receive technical assistance.
“We pride ourselves on being a leader in technology, innovation, and provider of top flight equipment to other Cup teams. This is another example of a team coming to us for help in areas where we believe we excel,” said co-owner George Gillett Jr. “This is an agreement to help a fellow Dodge team new to the family.”

Also DEI has an agreement with RCR to develope motors. other teams get motors from HMS.

whether we like it or not it is here... and brought in via Jack rousch.. lol he had a 5 car stable... a program with yates that they shared engine development..and a satellite team with boris said driving... more cars, more data....more testing opportunities... I am not a big fan of it but it is here.. hendrick supplies motors for several teams ... and those teams act in a matter like team cars.. not full team cars, but when drafting opportunities are needed guess who is right there... the DLP toyota with JJ yeley is a unofficial team car for gibbs... dei, rcr , and the now defunct andy petree racing had the RAD team... dale drove for rcr, owned dei.. and andy petree was a former crew chief of dales ... the dei/ rcr thing is a natural progression.... the dodge teams of petty/andretti have affiliations.....now add robby g... yes and the waltrip/ bill davis racing thing... am I leaving any out.. oh yeah ganassi... umm what can be said there... how many forms of racing is he involved in? and rcr is working with a F1 team in england I think.. then the added teams in development in busch and truck series.. yes I said busch... hate change.. still tend to cal it winston cup too! so shoot me! there are so many cooperative teams across the board it is impossible to list them all... just a fact of life...
