what i mean is did you like the fact that it is harder to drive and you actually have to work to drive it, anotherpoint that Daytona avoided the big wreck thanks to the car and how it helps people when they are out of control. Oh and one last thing i like the fact that even tho you are out in front if the pack gets together they can come and get you. very exciting races and finishes

Harder to drive? As compared to a real stock which is or was defined by the NASCAR rule book as having a manufacturers stock body, the new car is much easier to drive. If you'd like a comparison, try driving a big block Impala, Ford Galaxie or Hemi Charger through a set of curves at speed. Stock cars previously used manufacturer designed small & big block engine blocks with beefed up "bottom ends" so "stock cars" were much harder to drive simply because of their bulk and front to rear weight bias. The old stock cars were also about as aerodynamic as a shoe box but were much more exciting to watch race.
Prior to restrictor plate racing, there was hardly ever a "big one" since the cars handled differently from each other and were powered by more or less horsepower.
The pack catching up doesn't have anything to do with the car of tomorrow/today as opposed to a stock car or even last years common body car. Packs catch up by using the draft or "freight train." The ability to draft faster today is simply because NASCAR "opened up" the restrictor plate this year which gives the drivers more pedal (horsepower).
The COT seems to be easier to "save" after getting loose but the COT is no more safer than any other car. As a matter of fact since the COT has no front spoiler to speak of other than the flat cow catcher used now, front down force has been reduced significantly which certainly makes the COT drive tight (no front end grip) and which is proven by the front tire problems many of the teams are having. The tight condition is made worse by the mandatory shock and spring packages and tires currently being mandated by NASCAR.
The "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday!" addage no longer applies to NASCAR Racing since the common body was introduce in 2002 (if memory serves me correctly) and the COT introduced last year bear no sheet metal resemblance to the Dodge, Ford, Chevy or Toyota. It's all in the body wrap (decals). No wonder the manufacturer's sales are way down.
If NA$CAR were to loosen up their mandated rules, with the soft walls of today, a true stock car with roof flaps would be just as safe if not safer than the COT is today while speeds would increase and the competition would improve dramatically.
I doubt that NA$CAR will ever do that since they seem to rather enjoy "controlling" our sport!
The jury is till out on the popularity of the COT and NA$CAR. NA$CAR has had a serious loss of fans since the "common body" and COT were mandated. In the last few years, alot of die-hard stock cars fans have given the France Family the bird and quit watching NASCAR and going to the races. The TV ratings have fallen like a rock although I hear Daytona's ratings were up this year.
The good point for the COT is that the younger crowd really seems to like the look of the car. Many kids have said, "it really looks much like" the sports imports that kids are driving today.
Maybe it's time for us old die-hard fans to just give the reins to the kids of today and quit bellyaching about what once was but, if we did that, we'd be called quitters and you just know we can't accept that!
Great post sir!

"There's things that gnaw at a man worse than dyin'"

The thing I really like about it is that it looks more like a car, rather than a slender sheet of metal with a car design.
I never cared much for the really aerodynamic looking cars that they replaced. I prefer the blunter nose.
But again, that's just personal preference on looks.
I like the way the car looks also, it's looks sporty and mean. I also like how it's safer for the drivers and can smack the wall a hundred times and still be raceable.
I hate import cars and I don't think the COT looks anything like them. It looks like a mean american race car.

i will respond more when i have more time but as for right know, i have to say that you do make some great points, but i really think you are stuck in the past.
The old days are gone and new big business has moved in get used to it. This is the new face of nascar. investers don't care about yester year unless they can explote it. No body wants to see a guy in the lead by 3 laps any more, people want to see it come down to the wire, bumper to bumper action. Don't feel bad because it's not your daddy's nascar anymore, thing change and honestly it is about time nascar did as well.
I don't care to much for the look but I do like the fact that this car is not "dog tracking" meaning that when you look at it comming towards you, it's comming at you showing face first and not the left side of the car. I'd love for Nascar to replace that damn wing and put a spoiler back there again...That thing looks bad no mater how you look at it!!!
I like that the car is really "undrivable" this can only mean that the drivers will actually have to work at it a little harder. Like DW was saying the other day : " The old cars, when dumping them into the corners, the car used to "say" bring it on and with this car....The drivers are saying " Yes, yes ,yes....no.....shoot...no...yes yes yes.....Oh....
It's actualy a drivers car now and not a darn rocket that can take almost anything you through at it.
The only thing good about it is that it's safer. The bad things are that it's much slower, it's guly and it made for the most boring Daytona 500 I've ever seen.

How about demanding that all the cars look like they just came out of the show room?
If they have 4 doors ,so be it. COT cars don't do it for ME. By the way, If NASCAR screws up ,do they fine them selves? What happens to thoses fines?
How often do you you see a Toyota with a 4 barrel carb?
TO me all of the COTs look the same. Is NASCAR stuck in a money grab?
If we did not have the innovation, then there would have been No Superbird , etc.
