Put on some rain tires and see who's the better driver and/or who's got the most nerve?
Even the motorcycle guys race in the rain, not to mention the others in motorsports that aren't afraid of it.
I'm sure it's some sort of marketing thing. Somebody wouldn't get enough $$ if nascar brought itself up to the level of real racing.
If they did race in rain, can you imagine the antics of those who think it necessary to place electronic (fake: only seen on TV broadcast ) signs on the road courses that number the corners! What would they do, put up stupid signs like "slippery when wet", "caution", "drive safe"???
All they need are some tires, lights and wipers right?
With each car costing over $300,000.00, it would be a little foolish to risk them IMO. 43 cars would mean a potential lose of over 12 million dollars!

not to mention...cost of rain tires... windshield wipers capable of speeds near 200 mph....and water in the currently designed nascar configured engines... water in the air filters reek havoc during cautions as it is... many teams use the air flow as a cooler... they are not figuring on keeping things dry....

also i dont think they would want to run a window net if it was rainning. they would probably use lexan like the windshields and that could pose a major risk to the drivers in the event of a crash

well i think it would take a little more than wipers... but i do see the point that if they really wanted to they could make it work. but nascar has become more show than anything else. i love my drivers but they are for the most part puppets.
NASCAR learned at Suzaka Japan that the biggest detrement to Cup cars raceing in the rain was visibilty. So much rain mist was thrown in the air that the drivers could not see and even worse the spectators could not make out cars on the track!!! No Spectators, No Money, No Rain Race.

Well that may be how you feel about your drivers, but it ain't how I feel about mine!!

I also heard about DW say this once, with rain tires if they were just turning left all day the tires would get unequal and go flat. So the whole idea wouldn't work out.

I found this Q & A on another site today and thought it would fit in here, it says somethings that no one had mentioned yet!
Racing in rain won't work
Q: With some racing series going regardless of conditions, by just running on rain tires, why can't NASCAR adapt the same idea? If these guys played football, they'd be playing. Can't these drivers demonstrate safe driving based on conditions rather than speed?
A: In theory, what you suggest could be done. But I guarantee you, if fans paid a king's ransom for tickets only to sit through a cold rain for five hours to watch drivers slog around at 60 mph on rain tires, there would a world-class uprising. Could it be done? Yeah. Would it be an acceptable show for fans? No way, no how. It would be awful to watch and worse to sit through.
~LOL Now that is the best reason I have heard yet why NASCAR doesn't put rain tires on the cars. It is true, it would be oh-so boring!
I know I wouldn't pay to sit in the rain and watch it!!
