This was on Jayski today. So, is Allmendinger a good driver? As good as Montoya?
Official...Allmendinger to drive 2nd Red Bull car in 2007, #84: 2006 Team Red Bull formally announces a multi-year agreement with American open-wheel race car driver AJ Allmendinger to race the #84 Red Bull Toyota Camry for the 2007 Nextel Cup season. AJ completes the 2007 driver line-up for Team Red Bull that already includes 23- year-old Brian Vickers, who’ll pilot the #83 Red Bull Toyota Camry. Rick Viers, the veteran crew chief who guided the 24-year-old Californian through two successful NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races for Bill Davis Racing earlier this year, also joins Team Red Bull in the same role for 2007. A former Toyota Atlantic champion and Champ Car rookie of the year, AJ currently stands second in the 2006 Champ Car World Series standings with five race wins. To speed up his acclimation to stock car racing, Bill Elliott has graciously agreed to step aside and let AJ take on driver duties in the Team Red Bull entry for the upcoming 2006 Nextel Cup races at Atlanta and Texas. More info on the Red Bull teams at redbullusa.com.(Red Bull Racing PR), see quotes from Allmendiner on the #84 Team News and Links page.(10-24-2006)
Here I go again, posting for my own benefit. This was on Jayski.
Allmendinger dropped from Champ Car ride for final race: SPEED has learned that 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice has been tabbed by Gerry Forsythe to replace A.J. Allmendinger in the Champ Car season finale Nov. 12 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Allmendinger announced earlier this week he was leaving Champ Car for NASCAR next year and Forsythe decided to look for the future. "We've got to think about '07 and this will be a good audition for Buddy," said Forsythe, who called Allmendinger on Thursday morning to inform the five-time winner his services were no longer required. Besides giving Rice a long-awaited chance, this also means Champ Car will have an American in the starting lineup since Allmendinger was the lone Yank this season.(Speed Channel)(10-26-2006)
Yes it is an interesting thread Smoke, I just don't know enough about them to give an opinion. But like Dark said, a lot of them seem to be coming to Nascar. Sam Hornish Jr will be driving for Penske in the ARCA and Busch races some next year too. He is an Indy driver, this years Series Champ, I believe.

At least a few of you read this! So...Hornish is coming too?? I don't know how I feel about that.

So do you think if Ryan has another season like he did this year, Hornish will get his spot? Or will they just run a 3rd car? If I was Ryan or Kurt, I would be driving real hard next season.
Within a year or two, there will not be enough room for all these guys coming to Nascar. Or it will weed out the mediocrity in Nascar and then on any given Sunday, 43 cars will have a chance to win.
Penske is talking about running a 3rd car and I sure do wish they would. Look at all the 2 car teams this year, they have all struggled. (Gannasi and Yates come to mind) Penske needs to run a 3rd team and maybe let it do it's first year in the Busch series. Honrnish is only running ARCA and Busch, kinda like they had Ryan do his first year (Although he did run a few Cup too). Ryan and Kurt are not the only ones to blame for the bad year at Penske. Roger has not given the Nascar teams his attention or the equipment they need. Every week I read about them dragging the some ole cars from 2-4 years ago to the track. I could be wrong, but I don't think Ryan has had a new car this year. Roger is just way too focused on the Indy League to devote the time and resources to running his Cup teams. Poor Kurt Busch, here he moves to Penske and they give him Rusty's old worn out stuff to run with. A pity!!!
I am hoping for some improvements next year. It will help too that Dodge is changing the body. Every Dodge team has also struggled this year. Well Kasey Kahne did alright, but the I feel that Everhamn has finally figured something out about the Charger front end, and I think it has to do with his spring set up. One of those "grey areas" in the Nascars rules.
Anyway, yes it is getting crowded in Nascar and Roger Penske had better help his teams more. I feel it would be great if Roger would give the Cup division of his racing enterprise to Don Miller and let him run it. He cares about the Cup teams! Here's to a better year in 2007 for Penske Racing!

'06 Indy 500 champ to run final two races for Penske in No. 39

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Unlike Juan Pablo Montoya and A.J. Allmendinger, open-wheel star Sam Hornish Jr. isn't making a full-time jump into NASCAR, but Penske Racing has laid the groundwork for a possible move in the future.
Hornish, the 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner, said on Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway that he will attempt to run the final two Busch Series races this season in Penske Racing's No. 39 Dodge.
Hornish, 27, will also run selected Busch races in 2007 in the same car, which he will share with Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman. Hornish said that he will run the full Indy Car schedule again for Penske and will only run Busch races that do not conflict with his open-wheel commitments.
"I grew up wanting to be an Indy car driver, but I have watched hundreds of NASCAR races," Hornish said. "I always thought that would be something I'd like to try. I feel like this is the right time in my career where I feel I have a great opportunity."
Penske Racing's Nextel Cup program has struggled in 2006, but its Busch program has performed well, scoring two wins and nine top-10s in 12 starts. Busch scored both of the team's wins this season.
Hornish has already been testing stock cars, having run at both Kentucky Speedway and Iowa Speedway. Iowa Speedway, a relatively flat short track, is already being used as a testing facility for Busch and Nextel Cup cars, and Kentucky has long been used to shake down high-banked, high-speed setups.
"I still have a lot of questions in my mind as to how it is going to go," Hornish said.
Hornish is the third major star of open-wheel racing this year to announce a complete or partial move to NASCAR. In July, Ganassi Racing stunned the industry by hiring Formula One star Montoya to run its No. 42 Dodges in the Nextel Cup Series.
This month, Red Bull Racing finalized a deal that placed five-time Champ Car winner A.J. Allmendinger in its No. 84 Toyotas in the Nextel Cup Series in 2006

Hornish was the IRL champ this year. It looks like Tony started a trend with the open wheel drivers. I really doubt that Hornish is going to do very well in NASCAR though. AJ might do ok, he has some stock car racing in his background, and he's won a few Champ Car(rich man's IRL) events. Hornish's has been primarily open wheel. I hope both do well, but only time will tell.
