Ryan Newman, Penske Racing South Pre-Chicagoland NNCS Race Preview
Penske Racing South Press Release
NNCS Notes:
· Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, will make his fifth NASCAR Cup Series start at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday and his 170th in the NASCAR Cup Series.
· In Newman’s first-ever Cup Series race at the 1.5-mile trioval in Joliet, Ill., Newman started from the pole position in July 2002. Since then, Newman has only one start outside the top-10 – a 14th in 2003. His other two starts were from the eighth position in 2004 and from the outside of the front row last year. His average start at the Midwest track is 6.25.
· In 2003 at the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland, Newman recorded his only career win at the track. He has one other top-five finish - a fifth in 2002. His last two races in Joliet have not ended as well. He finished 34th in 2004 and 29th last year. Newman’s average finish at the track that opened in 2001 is 17.25.
· Of the four races Newman has driven at Chicagoland, he has led three of them for 163 laps. He has one DNF at the track, the result of being involved in a crash in 2004. Newman has completed 962 of a possible 1,068 laps for a 90 percent completion rate.
· Matt Borland, crew chief of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, and the Alltel team will take chassis PRS-76 to this weekend’s USG Sheetrock 400. Newman has driven this car three previous times this season; most recently at Michigan. Newman used this same chassis at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600, where he finished 35th after starting 18th, and at Darlington in May, where he placed sixth after starting second. Newman also tested this car at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 3. Last year, Newman raced this car at Chicagoland Speedway. Prior to the 2005 Chicago race, the car was used in May at Darlington and at Charlotte, and in June at Michigan. The car qualified on the front row in each of the four 2005 races, winning two poles - one at Charlotte and the other at Michigan.
Newman on Chciagoland Speedway:
“Chicagoland is a good track for me. We’ve done well here in the past with a win in only my second Cup start at the track and I think we have a good chance of getting a solid finish this weekend. The Alltel Dodge Charger crew always gives me a good car for qualifying, so if we can start up front and stay out of trouble, we should have a great weekend in Chicago.”
Quick Stats:
Chicagoland Speedway: 4
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/163
Best Starting Position: 1 (July 2002)
Best Finishing Position: 1 (July 2003)

Budweiser Race Preview
USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, Joliet,IL
Quotes from: DALE EARNHARDT JR. / Driver, #8 Budweiser Chevrolet:
On being the defending race winner at Chicago:
“That was a cool win for us last year, because we had struggled so bad at tracks like Chicago… To win there was a huge boost to our confidence. Our car was great that day. I hope we bring a car back as good as that one, because it was just awesome. It was fun winning a race with (Dale Earnhardt Inc. technical director) Steve Hmiel (serving as interim crew chief at the time). I’ve had so much respect for Steve for years, and to win a race with him on my pit box was pretty special. But the best part was to get a win with that team – that group of guys. They had been beaten up by the critics and a lot of fans last year. I had told them going in there was going to be a lot of pressure when they put on those red Budweiser uniforms, but I never thought it was going to be as cruel as it was for them. That win will always be for them.”
On climbing to third in the point standings:
“I feel good about where we’re at. We still need to get better. We obviously couldn’t hang with Tony (Stewart) and the guys up front Saturday night at Daytona. But we got out of there with little harm done, and even climbed a spot or two in the points. We’re racing big-picture here, one race at a time.”
On pulling the Cup/Busch double again this weekend:
“We’re running the Busch race this weekend because Chicago is in Menards’ back yard, plus the extra track time never hurts. It would be nice to pull off two Busch wins in a row, and give DEI a third Busch win in a row. I’m looking forward to climbing back into one of Tony (Eury) Sr.’s cars. That was a lot of fun last week. Sometimes doing the Busch Series/Cup Series double wears you out, because you go back and forth with the schedule all day. But when you’re in a car that’s capable of winning, it’s always fun.”
The No. 8 Bud Team at Chicago:
Previous Starts: 5
Best Start: 9th (July 14, 2002)
Best Finish: 1st (July 9, 2005)
This Race, Last Year: ST: 25th / FN: 1st / LED: 11 laps
This Week’s Bud Car: #39
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the #8 Budweiser team enter the Chicago race weekend third in points, the highest it has been all season. With nine races to go before the Chase for the Championship field is set, Dale Jr. trails only point-leader Jimmie Johnson and second-place Matt Kenseth. Through 17 races this year, Dale Jr. has one win (Richmond), five top-fives and seven top-10s.
CHICAGO WEEKEND NOTEBOOK:
Dale Jr. has climbed from sixth to third in the point standings in the last three races.
Has seven top-15 finishes in the last eight races.
Has scored 13 top-15 finishes in 17 races in 2006.
The Bud team has one victory and two top-10 finishes at Chicagoland Speedway.
Dale Jr. became the fourth different race winner at Chicagoland when he won this race last year, leading 11 laps en route to the victory.
Dale Jr. will compete in Saturday’s Busch Series race in a #8 Chevrolet prepared by his longtime crew chief Tony Eury Sr. Dale Jr. won last week’s Busch race at Daytona, leading 88 of 100 laps to earn his 21st career Busch Series win.

Harvick Set to Feature Third Expertise Challenge Race at Chicagoland
Wasserman Media Group, LLC., Press Release
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (July 5, 2006) – GM Goodwrench driver Kevin Harvick is set to feature the third of 12 #29 Goodwrench Expertise Challenge races this Sunday, July 9th when the green flag waves for the running of the USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. When the Goodwrench marketing executives sat down to set the 12-race schedule for this national promotion they couldn’t have picked a better one to challenge Harvick and his GM Goodwrench team to win. Harvick has two victories (2001 and 2002), two top-five and three top-ten finishes, which is tops among active drivers at Chicagoland.
“Chicago has been really good to us,” said Harvick. “We have won a couple races there and had a lot of success. A lot of it goes back to the very first test that RCR had there. It was a great test and we applied a lot of that stuff over to the next couple of years and have been able to manage a lot of success there. I really look forward to going back there every year.”
Twenty-nine lucky fans will receive an all-new 2007 Chevy Avalanche if Harvick wins 2 of the 12 selected NASCAR Nextel Cup races. GM Goodwrench will also set up a $200,000 scholarship fund to encourage young men and women to pursue careers as automotive technicians after the two wins occur. With one win already under Harvick’s belt this year and his combined expertise of Joilet, Illinois’s 1.5-mile D-shaped oval, the challenge could quite possibly play out in Harvick’s favor.
Fans can join the challenge by visiting a Chevrolet dealership or a Chevy display at select NASCAR events to get a ticket with an official promotion code. They then visit goodwrench.com/expert, enter the promotion code and submit the registration form to receive a sweepstakes entry. They can also visit goodwrench.com/expert to get a promotion code and complete the registration process. The next #29 Goodwrench Expertise Challenge race will take place at New Hampshire International Raceway on July 16th.

No. 29 GM Goodwrench driver Kevin Harvick on Chicagoland Speedway…
Talk about your spin in the grass and how it played out for a victory at Chicago?
“I didn't go through the grass on purpose. I spun out and the grass is way away from the racetrack there, so it's not something that you can drive through. It actually probably won the race for us. We were able to pit and the caution came out a few laps later and everybody else had to pit. We were able to stay out. So it probably won us the race that year.”
What's unique about the racetrack?
“Probably that you go through the corners pretty much wide open. You let off sooner than you do at most places, and you drive it all the way through the corners under power. That’s not extremely different from other tracks, but there is a lot more throttle there than at most places. You get back in it (the gas) a lot quicker than you do at most places.”
With more wins among active drivers at Chicagoland, do you think you have it figured out a little better than anyone else?
“I think everybody has got the driving part figured out. Right now, it’s more about the little things, like shock package. Shocks are probably the biggest part of it. It’s really more about picking apart your racecar and coming up with that unique set-up. We had it the first two years we went to Chicago and were pretty close last year as well.”

Your welcome! I figured there were enough Jr. fans here to appreciate it! I was hoping to get a Kasey Kahne one, too. If I run across one I will put it up!

Kluever To Make NEXTEL Cup Debut This Weekend At Chicagoland
Roush Racing Press Release
CONCORD, N.C. – Todd Kluever has a big weekend ahead of him at Chicagoland Speedway. Not only will he be competing in Saturday’s Busch Series race, he will be attempting his first NEXTEL Cup Series start on Sunday as well.
The race at Chicagoland will be the first of seven NEXTEL Cup races scheduled for Kluever this season in preparation for him to take over Mark Martin’s famed No. 6 Ford in 2007. Kluever’s other NEXTEL Cup races will be at Michigan, California, Kansas, Lowe’s, Texas and Phoenix. This weekend the No. 06 Ford Fusion will sport a special Post-it/3M paint scheme for both the Busch and Cup events.
“I couldn’t be more excited for this weekend,” Kluever said. “It’s hard to believe two years ago I was racing in the ASA Series and watching it fall apart. I didn’t know what was going to happen to my racing career. Now I’m going to be making my NEXTEL Cup debut driving for Jack Roush. If anyone would have told me that two years ago I never would have believed it. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, especially with an organization like Roush Racing.
“I tested the Cup car a few weeks ago at Kentucky and had an awesome test. Frank Stoddard will be my crew chief and Jimmy Fennig will be there as well so I’ve got two really talented, knowledgeable guys helping me. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to race 700 miles in one weekend. Sunday will be my Mom’s birthday so a good finish would really make for a fun birthday party that night.”
Roush Racing is a subsidiary of Livonia, Mich., based Roush Enterprises that operates 14 motorsports teams; five in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup with drivers Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards, six in the Busch Series with Martin, Kenseth, Biffle, Edwards, Todd Kluever and Danny O’Quinn, Jr., and three in the Craftsman Truck Series with Martin, David Ragan, Erik Darnell and Michel Jourdain, Jr. For sponsorship inquiries, contact Robin Johnson, Roush Racing, (704) 720-4645.

Bill Elliott's First Of Five Races In No. 00 Burger King Car Begins At Chicagoland Speedway
Michael Waltrip Racing Press Release
JOLIET, Ill. (July 3, 2006) – This weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, Bill Elliott prepares for the first of five races that he is scheduled to drive the No. 00 Burger King NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series entry for Michael Waltrip Racing as the organization plans to field multiple full-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Toyota Camry entries in 2007.
“This will be our first race in the Burger King car,” Elliott said. “The five tracks that we are going to are the kind I really enjoy racing. To get ready for Chicagoland, we’ve been testing and preparing for this race and we are glad it’s finally here. We tested at the Milwaukee Mile and Kentucky Speedway not long ago. They even tested one of the cars just yesterday with David Reutimann at Nashville Superspeedway.”
This weekend the 44-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series winner’s focus is topping his best finish of seventh-place, which occurred at the 1.5-mile D-shaped tri-oval in 2002.
“I’ve always qualified well at Chicagoland Speedway and finished well there too,” Elliott stated, who has two top-10 finishes in three starts at the track. “The last time I was there was in 2003. We started third and we finished 11th in the No. 9 car. When tracks age, the racing is better and I like the track more.”
Last month at Michigan International Speedway, Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) announced a partnership with Burger King Corporation (BKC) and Domino’s Pizza (DPZ) to be co-primary sponsors of its second 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series team.
“These five races are strictly meant to prepare us for next season,” Waltrip said. “It also keeps us in loop as to what’s going on in the garage right now. There’s a lot of energy built around these races that Burger King is a part of. Just yesterday, I pulled up to the Burger King drive-thru and they handed me a Michael Waltrip Racing No. 00 Burger King Racing Coca-Cola cup with my breakfast. That even got me more keyed up about what’s going on this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.”
Live pre-race coverage of the USG Sheetrock 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event at Chicagoland Speedway on July 9th begins at 3 p.m. Eastern on TNT and will be broadcast by MRN Radio.

“Kenny Francis made some good adjustments, and the track was in better shape than it was in practice. The car felt awesome. I’ve sat on poles before with that type of feeling. Jeff Burton just put down a killer lap today. Everything felt really good. The McDonald’s Dodge Charger was good. They made some good adjustments. It was better than practice, and the track conditions were almost perfect. It felt like a top five. I was hoping we could have been first, but Jeff Burton put down an awesome lap.
“I think we’ll be ready to race Sunday. The team has done an awesome job, and we’re ready to go fast. I think with no problems we should be able to run up front, and hopefully we’ll be in position to get another victory. A lot of things have to go right, but we’ll see how it shakes out. The team has been working really hard and preparing great cars. They’ve put a lot of effort and dedication into what they do. We’ve been working well together and it seems like we get better every race.
“I feel like I’ve made some strides, and hopefully that will help us in the long run. We’ve been on a roll all season long, and hopefully we can keep it going and get in The Chase. After that it’s anybody’s race. I love being in the car as much as possible, and running The Busch car is just more seat time. I don’t feel like it’ll help me a lot for Sunday’s race, but it can’t hurt, either.”
BOBBY LABONTE (No. 43 Cheerios Most Popular Driver Charger)
“The guys made some adjustments between practice and qualifying. We picked it up a little bit, and obviously the track is cooling down a little, too. We got a lucky draw, and hopefully we’re going to have a good racecar for Sunday. We’ve got to practice the Busch car, but if we make it, I’m going to throw out the first pitch at the Sox game.
“All in all the guys did a great job today. I feel real good about the car. We’ve run it about all year long. I might have got a little smarter as the day went along, and we got a little better lap out of the car in qualifying. We’re finding our groove. Hopefully we can keep plugging along and get better. We’re knocking on some doors. We’re working hard to get there, and we’re going to get there. We’ve got to get our car handling good for Sunday. The grip is going to go away, so we’ve got to get it handling.
“Qualifying like this is great for the team. If you go back to the hotel tonight and you’ve qualified 35th, it doesn’t matter how good the car is. You’re still 35th. Hopefully the guys will come in tomorrow morning, geared up and feeling good. It is a good momentum builder. We’ve been pretty good, and I think we’re knocking on some doors. We’ve just got to put it all together. It’s just now half over, so it’s looking good.”
KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger)
“It was interesting coming from the Busch car over to the Cup car. I drove the Miller Lite Dodge like a Cup car, but it was like I was a little anxious in the center of the corner being a little loose. One lap and that was all it was going to be. We’ll see where we stack. I don’t think it was all that special going out first, but we’ll see where we fall in. I don’t think it hurt us, but on the mental aspect I think it did hurt a little bit.”
COMMENT ON RECENT STRING OF FOUR STRAIGHT TOP 10 FINISHES
“It’s a good feeling. There’s still more work to be done, and I think this is a good track to test our ability. The mile and a half tracks are where you have to be successful if you want to win a Nextel Cup Championship.”
KYLE PETTY (No. 45 Wells Fargo Dodge Charger)
“We had a little bit of a pickup, and that was good. The guys worked hard getting the car ready to qualify. We went through three setups in practice, and we were basically just doing race stuff. I had to pick up a little for them today. I couldn’t lose anything this time.”
SCOTT RIGGS (No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge Charger)
“The guys on this Valvoline Dodge did a good job of making changes. The car was a little loose getting in the corner and tight in the center and off. They made some adjustments and kept a cool head. Going out early is going to hurt us for sure, but it’ll give us a good idea of what our changes did and give us a good jump for tomorrow. We’ll probably end up about 15th. The team thinks it’ll be better, but I’ll stick with 15th. We’ve already got a pole. Now we need to win a race.”
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Mobil 1/Alltel Dodge Charger)
“It was a good improvement from practice so that was a good thing. We’ll have to see what we need to do to this Mobil 1 Dodge to make it faster in race trim and be competitive all weekend. We picked up almost three tenths from practice, so we made some gains. Only getting one qualifying run hurt us a little bit, but being where we are halfway through is pretty good I guess. Hopefully we’ll get a top 10 starting spot, lead a bunch of laps and win this race. The track is pretty good. It’s got a few bumps here and there, and that’s good. It gives it character. In general I think we’ll see a pretty good race with the track widening out. It’s really a fun-shaped race track. I look forward to the race. We’re looking from the outside in instead of the inside out right now. We’ll have to see. I know we have the potential to be in The Chase and run better. It’s just a matter of making it happen. This will be a good opportunity for us, based on the size of this race track where we’ve struggled in the past to know if we’ve turned things around or not.”
