Father-Daughter Team To Deliver New Project -- 'The Humpy Show' -- To SPEED™
Wheelers Bring Best of Both Worlds Together As Show Looks To Connect NASCAR’s Past And Present Superstars; Pilot Will Air During Daytona Speedweeks Coverage
SPEED TV, Press Release
Never one to shy from the cameras, longtime Lowe’s Motor Speedway President & General Manager H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler will put his skills as NASCAR’s ultimate promoter, storyteller and diplomat on display for SPEED viewers beginning with a one-hour pilot Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. ET, when The Humpy Show debuts with guests Buddy Baker and Kurt Busch discussing great NASCAR rivalries.
“Without question, Humpy is one of the true trendsetters in the world of motor sports,” said SPEED President Hunter Nickell. “His passion for constantly moving forward with uniquely creative ideas while always maintaining a healthy respect for the past is a philosophy embraced by SPEED … we’re thrilled Humpy is going to share some of his valuable time and insight with our viewers.”
Calling the shots behind the camera will be Wheeler’s daughter, Patti, whose team from Wheeler TV delivered the idea to SPEED.
“There were and still are swashbuckling characters who have hilarious, compelling and sometimes poignant stories … some of which happened forty years ago and some of which happened last week,” Patti said. “And no matter how hard we try as journalists and television producers, we never seem to portray these stories as well as Humpy and his racer friends do while sitting on their own back porch. “The Humpy Show” captures the colorful stories of today and the rich heritage of NASCAR like nothing you’ve ever seen in sports television before.”
Humpy, a 2006 inductee into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, created and has been involved in bringing many innovative ideas to the motor sports industry, including the first superspeedway to host night racing (NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, 1992); Legends Cars, the first successful attempt to mass produce race cars; extravagant pre-race entertainment shows; at-track condominiums; the annual AutoFair, the world’s largest automotive extravaganza; and many other unique motor sports activities.
"I love being creative and working with creative people, and Patti is one of the most imaginative people in television,” Humpy said. “In addition to her real forte for live sports television, she is exceptional at creating programming that is informative and entertaining. With Patti involved, dullness certainly makes an exit … working with her is like catching passes from Tom Brady."
During his 33 years at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Wheeler has increased the track’s seating capacity from 75,000 to 160,000 and made it one of the most modern facilities in sports entertainment.
