It isn't that complicated. I personally think that it will make racing for the win a little better maybe. Although those just keep it safe drivers like Jimmie will probably still keep it safe. It is only 10 (5 for winning and 5 for leading) points really, because not always the person that leads the most laps wins.
I still think the concept of the chase is stupid, but what do I know?

I love these changes! This is something NASCAR needed to do for a long time. Maybe France is actually thinking about the fan base and not money? This will definately help the likes of Gordon, Stewart, Johnson, etc who are capable of winning 5 races a season, maybe more. NASCAR did a great job with these changes, and I support them 100%. Now winning actually means something, and the championship is going to be more deserving. I actually perfer this system over the Winston Cup format, that's how much I like it. As much as I liked the Winston Cup format, it still did not give alot of meaning to wins, but it did give a meaning to championships, where this format does both. Kudos to NASCAR.

While it may not seem like it means much, but when the Chase comes around, it does mean something. You get 10 bonus points for EVERY win you have during the first 26 races. Kasey Kahne would lead the standings once the Chase started if this format was placed in 2006. That's where NASCAR made winning mean something, and I'm happy they made winning mean something.

Exactly. Like, if we applied this to other seasons...Jeff Gordon (the year he had 13 wins) would have a 130 point lead in the first race of the chase. So if a driver dominates, he will pick his destiny, kinda/sorta.

yikes I am with ya h8gordon... too complicated..... next they will add points for laps completed... deduct points for bumping errrr taking the air off other drivers...lol and then penalize them for inappropriate hand gestures and words/ comments detrimental to nascar.... might even loose points for having non-approved decals inside the car in view of the camera... etc... might lose points for wearing the wrong brand of undies tooo!!!!!!! might as well watch RC racing with 5 yr olds!!!!!.... wouldn't it just be easier to give the .... say top 5 finishers extra points at the time they complete the d@#$ race? ... add in a 5 point bonus for leading at halfway.... more points for finishing on the lead lap, maybe even for even finishing the race!.... arghhhh!!!!! don't we have enough rules.... can ya tell I am gettin a bit flustered ?

Meh, it's an improvement, but I'd like to see them do away with 5 points for leading a lap. To me, you should get something for leading the most laps, but not for leading just one. Woohoo, they lead one lap out of how many? I'm tired of seeing teammates pull over to let the other get 5 points. Plus, getting half of the extra points someone has for winning a race, when all you did was maybe stay out for a lap, makes no sense to me.

I do like that they are giving points to drivers that have won races. I hope it cuts down on the comments from drivers, "we just have to be consistent". "Just" is the main word in that statement that stands out to me, and it's irritating.

I wonder why they decided on 12 instead of another number.

New Points Chase Format

from Nascar.com

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Race victories will become more important than ever in 2007 as a result of adjustments to the points system and the Chase for the Nextel Cup format announced Monday by NASCAR.

The adjustments are designed to establish more balance between winning and consistency, but there is a new emphasis on the former.

"The adjustments taken [Monday] put a greater emphasis on winning races," NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said. "Winning is what this sport is all about. Nobody likes to see drivers content to finish in the top 10. We want our sport -- especially during the Chase -- to be more about winning."

The Chase -- consisting of the season's last 10 races -- will further reflect the importance of racing to win, via a variety of adjustments.

During the format's first three years, the top-10 drivers in points after the 26th race of the season (at Richmond International Raceway) qualified for the Chase; in addition, any other driver outside the top 10 but within 400 points of the standings' leader was also eligible.

Starting this season, the 400-point cutoff is eliminated and the top-12 drivers in the points after Race 26 will qualify for the Chase.

All 12 drivers will have their point totals re-set to 5,000; each will then receive a 10-point bonus for each race victory they had during the first 26 races.

The Chase drivers will be "seeded" to start the Chase based on the number of wins amassed during the regular season.

In line with the Chase adjustments, wins throughout the season will be more valuable.

Race winners throughout the 36-race season will now receive 185 points, a five-point increase.

Counting the five-point bonuses available for leading at least one lap and leading the most laps, a race winner now can earn a maximum of 195 points, creating a possible maximum of 25 points between first- and second-place finishers.

The 2006 season of Kasey Kahne provides a dramatic illustration of the adjusted Chase format's implications.

Kahne qualified for last year's Chase, but started it in 10th place -- despite having won a series-high five races. Under the new format, Kahne would begin the Chase in first place, with 5,050 points.

Better than plan B:

"Let's throw it down to Wally Dalenbach for the NEXTEL Communications Chase Lotto!"

I like it I think its actually simpler. Top twelve after race 26 are in the Chase everyone starts over at 5000 points plus a 10 point bonus for each win during the first 26 races. Think about it chances are several will have the same amount of wins and unless someone has a real blowout year ( like 11 wins or something ) they will all start the final 10 races Real close in points! ( possibly several ties )
I,m also glad they got rid of the 11th places sorry your a loser bonus and remember only Ten go to NY so even the teams running in the back have to run hard ( before if you were in the top ten you couldnt fall out so you were gauranteed a trip to NY ) to get there.
I like the 5 extra points for winning too, now theres no way the second place car can get the same amount of points as the winner
