Rudd Leads Final Cup Test
Sixteen of the 26 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series teams remained for the four-hour makeup testing session on Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. Ricky Rudd, driving the No. 88 Ford for Robert Yates Racing, was the fastest with a lap of 186.405 mph. Rounding out the top five were Roush Racing’s Jamie McMurray (185.410), Richard Childress Racing’s Kevin Harvick (185.143), Evernham Motorsports’ Scott Riggs (185.067) and two-time Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin (184.904).

By A.J. Perez, USA TODAY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Boris Said was one of the "scrubs" left at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday.
Half of the 14 teams that tested during the make-up session will have to race their way into next month's Daytona 500. The rest are safe, having finished within the top 35 in owner's points in 2006.
"There will probably be 25 people going for those spots," noted Said, a road-racing specialist who says he will attempt to make seven Nextel Cup races this season. "If you are in the top (four) of the scrubs (the first day of qualifying), you're in the show."
Those who miss out in the qualifying session Feb. 11 will have one last chance to make the field of 43 four days later at the Gatorade Duel, two 150-mile qualifying races. Said concedes that one-car operations such as his SoBe No Fear team enter at a severe disadvantage.
"We are an underdog team," he said. "We only have five full-time employees."
That didn't stop Said from unexpectedly capturing the pole here at the Pepsi 400 last July. He was in the lead until Tony Stewart passed him with two laps to go. Said finished fourth, a feat he's not overly optimistic he can pull off at the prestigious 500-miler here Feb. 18.
"It's the hardest race in NASCAR to make, especially now with all the new Toyota teams coming in," he said. "Having to make it on time is going to be a nail-biter. It will be like a win for us."
Ditto for Morgan-McClure Motorsports. Cup veteran and 2002 Daytona 500 champion Ward Burton will try to put the No. 4 car on the Daytona grid. The team also will try to qualify Busch driver Eric McClure, nephew of team owner Larry McClure, in the 500.
Eric McClure said his team has about 1/20th the funding of some of NASCAR's multicar efforts, such as Roush Racing and Hendrick Motorsports. Throw in the new crop of Toyota teams and some expanded established teams such as Ginn Racing (formerly MB2 Motorsports), and McClure becomes a realist.
"We're definitely at a disadvantage when we compete against these guys," McClure said. "You have to work a little harder and a littler smarter. It seems like the past few years, there's been a Cinderella story at the Daytona 500. I really believe we can be that this year."
Think Green
Haas CNC Racing's Jeff Green retained the quickest time after the first week of testing concluded Thursday afternoon. He made that run (186.722 mph) Wednesday afternoon.
Dale Earnhardt Inc. (Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr.) and Hendrick Motorsports (Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears) were among the teams that didn't return for the rain date, a session that was scheduled after Monday's afternoon session was wiped out.
The fastest time Thursday was run by Robert Yates Racing's Ricky Rudd (186.405 mph).
This week's test consisted of about half the Cup teams, with the others slated to run around the 2.5-mile superspeedway next week.

Four-time Nextel Cup champion Jeff Gordon and heralded rookie Juan Pablo Montoya headline the drivers attending the Nextel Cup test session Monday through Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway.
While about half the teams practiced last week, the rest of the teams will get their shot on the 2.5-mile oval as they prepare for the 2007 season and the Daytona 500.
Among the drivers who will get their first restrictor-plate test with new teams are Mark Martin with Ginn Racing and Jeremy Mayfield with Bill Davis Racing.
Mayfield will be one of five Toyota drivers at the test as they work on the debut of the Camry. Joining him will be Mike Skinner (in a third BDR car), AJ Allmendinger (Team Red Bull), Michael Waltrip (Michael Waltrip Racing) and David Reutimann (MWR).
In addition to Gordon and Martin, the other top-10 drivers from last season testing this week will be Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch.

The Wire
AJ Allmendinger will finish his week of testing at Daytona International Speedway early.
Allmendinger, the open wheel star and newest addition to the Red Bull driver lineup, will step aside Tuesday to allow teammate Brian Vickers to return.
Vickers, who has more stock car experience than Allmendinger, will help the team try to find the speed that has eluded them so far in the Daytona test sessions. Vickers scheduled test session was last week, but team officials confirmed Monday that they would bring him back to Daytona. During last week’s session, Vickers and Team Red Bull posted the slowest laps among the Toyota’s that tested.
Allmendinger managed a 34th place lap on the speed charts on Monday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - All eyes turned to Kurt Busch's No. 2 Car of Tomorrow Dodge in Jackson Hewitt Preseason Thunder testing after he recorded a lap of 191.188 mph around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway.
Today, which was the final day of NEXTEL Cup testing, teams had the option of bringing out a third car (C) and Penske opted to use their COTs with Busch and Ryan Newman.
Busch's speed in his 2C Dodge, that was using a 1 1/8 plate, was over six mph faster than Jeff Gordon's "Car of Today" speed of 184.596 mph in the a.m. session.
"It's good to have the data," crew chief Roy McCauley said in regards to the 1 1/8 plate. "But I don't see us from my standpoint racing that. If I had to guess it looks like it will be a one inch."
Both of the Penske cars tried a number of combinations throughout the day.
"We worked on gear and plate (one inch and and 1 1/8), Mike Nelson and Ryan did the opposite," McCauley said. "That was the trend just to see what way we would go. We were just trying to get a baseline where things are at.
Newman's team started with a 15/16 plate and then went to a one inch and kept the same gear in it for the first two runs.
With Busch's speed by far the fastest on the day that raised the question in the garage area how legal the car actually was.
"It's 100 percent legal to the rules that I have," McCauley said about the No. 2 Dodge COT.
Paul Menard led the rain-shortened afternoon drafting session with a lap of 187.099 mph, which was the fastest over the two weeks of Cup testing.
Kyle Busch (186.765 mph), Jeff Green (186.722 mph), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (186.606 mph) and David Ragan (185.536 mph) rounded out the top five in the seven sessions conducted at Daytona
