Speeds pick up during drafting test at Daytona

Speeds improved during the afternoon session of Jackson Hewitt Preseason Thunder on Tuesday, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. bettered the morning best by more than 2 mph.

Earnhardt raced around Daytona at 186.606 mph, completing the 2.5-mile track in 48.230 seconds. Chevrolets held the top-three spots during the session, which was designed as a drafting practice.


Ricky Rudd was the only driver to post a pair of top-10 times in the afternoon session, although Greg Biffle came in at ninth and 11th.

Jamie McMurray, the only driver to top 184 mph in the morning session, was the last of eight cars to reach the 186 mph mark. He led the morning session.

Mike McLaughlin, who is substituting for Tony Stewart, posted a pair of top-10 times in the morning session, including the second-fastest. His afternoon time dropped him to 17th.

Fords and Chevrolets packed the top 10 all day, although Dodges picked up speed significantly in the afternoon session, posting three of its drivers in the top 10.

The fastest Toyota of the day was Dale Jarrett, who was 14th in the morning session and 15th in the afternoon.

(DAYTONA BEACH Fla.)-The weather cooperated Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway and under a bright blue Florida sky, teams participating in this weeks NASCAR Nextel Cup testing were able to get in a full session, including the first laps in drafting of the week..

In drafting, where cars are bunched together to take advantage of the aerodynamic draft created by multiple cars running together, Dale Earnhardt Junior put down the fastest lap on the 2.5-mile track with a speed of 186.606. Earnhardt led the Chevy contingent who had the top three fastest times overall.

In the midst of Tuesday’s schedule, reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and Daytona 500 champion Jimmie Johnson reflected on his place in the sport.

“I’m glad it’s here,” he said. “I’m happy to be back at the race track. I rolled in thinking ‘man, I won here last time we were here for this race!’ At the same time I thought, ‘I’m also the champion!’ It’s been a great, emotional ride for myself [and] for the team.

“We’ve always been confident, but winning the championship, I feel, will really change the way we approach the year. We know it’s time to get back to work.

“We learned more about ourselves through all of that and we're excited to get into '07,” Johnson said. “We feel like the Car of Tomorrow, what it brings and the challenges for that car; it's going to help the No. 48 team and help Hendrick Motorsports. And, with the current car that we have, we feel like we're on top of things there, as well.”

Johnson arrives in Daytona as one of the more dominant drivers over the past five seasons at this racetrack.

In five Daytona 500 starts, Johnson has four top-five finishes, including his victory last season. Johnson also has three top-10 finishes in the Pepsi 400. In 10 Cup Series races at Daytona, he’s finished off the lead lap only once – in his first Daytona 500 in 2002, when he was one lap down. He won the 2005 Budweiser Shootout exhibition race and finished fifth in his only NASCAR Busch Series start here, in 2001.

“It's time to look forward to 2007,” Johnson said. “[We’ll] fall back on the confidence of 2006, but we have a whole new set of circumstances to deal with and a whole new year to worry about.”

The Toyota teams, all of whom ran decent on Monday, seemed to lose their advantage Tuesday.

Dale Jarrett, driving the No. 44 car, was the fastest among the Camry’s, finishing the day in 15th place.

The other two Toyota teams testing finished well down the order, as they struggled to find enough speed in the draft. The slowest of the three was the No. 83 car driven by former Hendrick driver Brian Vickers.

"We just want to come down here and have a good test," said Vickers, whose best lap was nearly a second off the pace, at 182.994 mph.

"It's our first time testing - not only as a group of people but the cars as well. All of it's a learning process for us.

"We've just got to have a good smooth test, nothing go wrong, get laps on the car, try stuff and learn to communicate."

Most Dodge teams tested with the new nose that will feature on the Charger this year. Evernham's Kasey Kahne was among those running it on his car since the opening day of practice.

"The car we have here, the one we're starting the season with, has a new nose which will be a little bit different," Kahne, said.

"We've been doing a lot of testing with it. We're hoping it helps us run better into traffic at some tracks."

Testing continues Wednesday. A make-up session from Monday afternoon’s rainout will take place on Thursday from 9-1, although how many teams will actually take advantage of that extra session remains to been seen.
