Atlanta came very close to getting restrictor plates a few years ago when it was repaved and speeds went up but now that the track has seasoned and lost some grip the speeds have came down to a safer level.
WOW thanks for all that info again you know your Nascar

You are right. I stand corrected, I was thinking of the roof hatch.

Some how I have missed this post until now. I knew the plates were to keep the cars from going airborne, but didn't know the story behind it. Thanks Flash, I learned another new thing today!

I always heard the talladega raceway was built for 200 mph... anything over that would allow cars to get into the stands... should have know the insurance lobby would have been the real reason! thnx flash!

Restrictor Plate Racing

I would like to see NASCAR do away with the plates but not give up on the safety regualtions they have implemented.
indy cars have boost controls for the engines so if the driver wants to pass the DRIVER can control how fast he wants to go.
It use to be up to the driver to win a race; now it's the teams, sponsors, and NASCAR controling who wins.
NASCAR is like F1 racing; who ever gets in front usually wins because with restrictor plates it is too hard to pass. UNLESS you stay in the rear until after the big accident, then work yourself up to the front.
