Do restrictor plates make racing safer?

Do restrictor places make racing safer? What do you guys think?

The up side is that they keep speeds under 200 mph, and I'm not entirely positive if the safety technologies in place could keep drivers from getting hurt in crashes above that speed. The down side is that it forces everyone into the pack, and one little hiccup creates an enormous wreck. I'm pretty sure that I don't count multi-car crashes as safe events.

I'm curious to know your thoughts about it.

It has always been my understanding that they started using the restrictor plates to keep the cars from going air borne at the high rate of speeds they can reach on the superspeedways. So that does make it safer, but as a result they all travel in one pack and that makes it more dangerous. I could be wrong, if so someone please straighten me out!

Restrictor plates have positives and negatives. I think everyone knows that yes, they slow down the cars, but bad side, they put everyone into the "pack" and like someone already said, it causes the "big one". I know that the roof flaps also help in preventing the car from flipping. I guess in a sense it's safer cause they are not going as fast. But those huge wrecks are dangerous as well, not only to the drivers, but people on pit road. JMO......

All the restrictor plate does is restrict the amount of air going into the carborator(sp), therefore making the engine produce less horsepower, creating slower speeds.

The new car doesn't have roof flaps.

Are you sure about that? I just read an article on NASCAR.com where at least one of the drivers was talking about the size of the roof flaps.

MIKE HONCHO will become famous soon enough
I wish they would take off the plates they could still regulate the speed with the size of the rear gear.

I just watched some replays of the crashes and they show the roof flaps deploying pretty clearly.

Daytona and Talladega already have a gear rule in effect which resulted in several blown engines due to the higher race speeds generated by the new COT car and restrictor plate package. The engines where turning in excess of 8900 rpm during todays race.
The restrictor plate came into being at the Superspeedways after Bobby Allisons Buick became airborne after an engine failure and took out over 100 feet of the front stretch fence. Amazingly NONE of the Fans where seriousely Injured. The INSURANCE COMPANY that covers NASCAR will never ever allow NASCAR to have cars traveling over 200 mph!!! Atlanta came very close to getting restrictor plates a few years ago when it was repaved and speeds went up but now that the track has seasoned and lost some grip the speeds have came down to a safer level.
