Exclamation NASCAR to distribute new Nationwide Series spacer

SCENEDAILY
BY SCENEDAILY STAFF REPORT

NASCAR Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash says the series will handle the new tapered spacer much the same way it does restrictor plates.

The new spacer will be used in all non-restrictor plate races in the Nationwide and Craftsman Truck series this year as NASCAR tries to lengthen engine life and reduce horsepower.

Balash said NASCAR will distribute a random spacer to every team at every track. Each will have a serial number so NASCAR can account for them. (Spacers have been available for engine builders to test, but those won't be used in competition.)

"We'll handle it like the restrictor plate," Balash said. "We want to make sure there's no massaging that takes place. We'll basically be helping the team install them and getting the carburetor put on and sealed."

The spacer, which sits between the carburetor and intake manifold, will take out 70 to 80 horsepower, according to Laerte Zatta, Toyota Racing Development's program manager for the Nationwide and truck series.

"For us, that was a great thing," Zatta said. "We do two events with an engine. We are trying to do three events. They've lowered the RPMs, less power. We manage to pass to the teams that savings. I think it was a good decision all the way around."

Question but what about going fast?

HUH??? Well, I am all for preserving the life of an engine and all.....BUT.. isn't the lose of horsepower goin' to effect the speed?? I mean come on, this is RACIN'! The rules are simple, go fast, turn left, try to keep the wheels on the ground, and the shinny side up! If a few engines have to give their lives for the sake of racin', what's the big deal? ~LOL~ At least they could go out in a blaze of glory doing what they were built to do!
Seriously, how much will the reduction of 70-80 hp do to the speeds?

BigE?...Honcho?...Flash?

This is another way to slow the cars down too. They don't want them to be faster than the Cup cars on a regular basis. NASCAR has always made rules "to save the teams money". Usually it doesn't save them a nickel but NASCAR can then say they are trying to keep the cost of racing in the Nationwide Series down.

70-80 hp is a bi deal i would think. considering most 4 cylinder cars have just over 100 hp or less..
looks like it would drop them way down in speed and the time to get up to speed would have to take longer too..
i agree to let them just get out there and go or blow!

less horsepower? in drag racing and street rodding a phenolic spacer is used to straighten out the airflow which is something to enhance performance.. not reduce it... unless it is restricting the air flow...

there was a guy who got in trouble a few years ago in cup racing who matched the restrictor plate to the intake manifold... had inserts to guide the air flow ... it helped the performance some ... with the thin restrictor plate the air is also swirling around without a good path down the plenum of the manifold... smooth airflow is a good thing... swirling random air flow causes high and low air pressure areas... less efficient..

to me the spacer must be somewhat a restictor plate? dunno need more details.... mrs12

A spacer usually helps the lower end torque or the acceleration at lower speeds.I think what they are going to use is a spacer with 1 big tapered hole in it instead of 4 small holes in it

NASCAR went with the tapered spacer to limit power in the Nationwide engines at ALL TRACKS. The traditional restrictor plate is essentialy a flat plate with 4 holes smaller than carburator throttle bore holes to restrict airflow. This works very well on the Superspeedways were the engines are always at full throttle but causes major tuneing and driveability problems at tracks were throttle control is required, ie short tracks/roadcourses where you lift going into the corners and sqeeze the throttle down coming out.
The tapered spacer is like a funnel with the large end under the carb and then tapering down to one single smaller opening at the intake manifold. This setup helps the driveability and reduces flat spots in the throttle curve while still limiting full throttle power.
