427 cubic engines were allowed in Cup all the way up untill 1978 ( they had restricter plates on them after 1973 ) very few teams ran them after 1975-1976 after they found that the weight and restrictor plates of the BIG BLOCKS made them uncompetitive. 358 cubic inches has been in effect since the early eighties for Cup cars.
