Nemechek reprises role as fastest qualifier for Cup race at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Joe Nemechek drove his Chevrolet to the No. 1 starting spot for Sunday’s Aaron 499 in Saturday's qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway.

Going out next to last among 46 cars entered, Nemechek ran 187.386 mph in the No. 78 Chevrolet to earn his fourth career pole at this 2.66-mile track and his 10th pole overall. He last started first in a Sprint Cup race at Michigan in August 2005.

Tony Stewart, who has six career runner-up finishes without a win at Talladega, got bumped to the No. 2 spot by Nemechek's lap. Stewart ran 186.896 mph on his lap.

Stewart was the only driver not among the go-or-go-home cars to qualify in the first two rows for the first impound race of the 2008 Cup season. Teams cannot adjust on their cars before Sunday's race.

Ken Schrader, driving the No. 70 Chevrolet, and A.J. Allmendinger, in the No. 84 Toyota, will start on the second row.

Schrader is making his first start for the Haas CNC Racing team. Allmendinger is returning to his ride after failing to qualify for the first three races of the year, after which Red Bull Racing put Mike Skinner in the car for five races.

"I would like to say that was all driving skill, but it wasn't," Allmendinger said of his lap at 186.423 mph, crediting his car and his team.

"It was important for the team to make it, but it was doubly important for me to make it."

Four of the five fastest cars set up in race trim for the start of Sunday's race were Toyotas. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin, Stewart’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, will start fifth and seventh, respectively, while Brian Vickers, Allmendinger's teammate, lines up eighth.

TALLADEGA, ALABAMA (TICKER) —Through all the controversy and the multiple wrecks, Tony Stewart never lost his focus.

Stewart won his third career NASCAR Nationwide Series race, taking the checkered flag at the Aaron’s 312 with an average speed of 133.096 on Saturday.

In a Toyota, Stewart led 80 of the 117 laps and held off a challenge from Dale Earnhardt Jr. and others for his first win on the Nationwide circuit since winning the Hershey’s Kissables 300 in 2006.

After the race was green-flagged with two laps to go after the eighth caution of the day, Stewart led all the way to the finish line, getting a challenge from Earnhardt in turns 2 and 3 of the last lap, before ‘Junior’ fell off to finish in sixth place.


The 36-year-old Stewart, who won his first pole in 23 NASCAR races at Talladega on Friday, had spent the prior two days defending his decision to announce that he is looking for a new racing team other than Joe Gibbs Racing, for which he’s been a driver for all of his 10 seasons.

Stewart also had to overcome several serious wrecks that wiped out rookie Dario Franchitti on the 10th lap and a huge 16-car pileup with 47 laps to go that halted racing altogether.

That crash was caused when veteran Kevin Lepage, who was coming back out on to the track after a pit stop and did not build up enough speed going into turn 1, causing Carl Edwards to practically run him over while other racers began spinning out. The multi-car wreck, which red-flagged the race, left 30 of the original 43 drivers left in the race when finally began again.

David Stremme finished second, Bobby Hamilton Jr. was third while Jason Leffler came in fourth.

Clint Bowyer, the current series point leader, finished 25th in a Chevy, 24 laps behind the leaders.
