NASCAR announced today that Chad Walter, crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet driven by Casey Mears and Tony Eury Sr., crew chief of the No. 88 Chevrolet driven by Brad Keselowski in the NASCAR Busch Series, have been fined and penalized due to rule violations at Texas Motor Speedway.
Both crew chiefs were fined $10,000 and placed on probation until December 31, 2007, for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A — 10.7F: (lug nuts were not fully threaded; threads had been removed) of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Rule Book.
The infraction was discovered during pre-race inspection on November 3rd.

Ummmm.....why on earth would they remove the treads on a lug nut? I may not be the brightest bulb on the string at times (I was a blonde as a child ~LOL~), but wouldn't you want the lugs to hold the wheels on the car via the threads??
A wheel leaving a speeding race car is not a good thing, as Jr can tell you, I am sure! So what possible advantage would this give the teams who did it? It would seem to me that doing this would be a recipe for disaster!!

they would go off and on faster which means faster pit stops possibly and you will not be doing pit stops if the wheel falls off.I think it's a real bonehead move.Plus I think the wheel will come loose faster that way on the track.
Poor JR. looks like his team is going to be used to test the ways Hendrick can "cheat" or "test in the grey areas" whatever you want to call it.

cheating time is all, get it done faster... the risk outways the cost when you finnish better, how far do you go? Ideally the depth of the nut needs to be at least the thickness of the bolt/stud , can you get by with less..yes.. should you ? hmm as long as the wheel stays on it is a great move... when it don't then it is a bonehead move... not like they run 5000 miles before they rotate the tires..so as long as they get away with it, then it is worth it... the first time a wheel pops loose, then we will think it was a bad move, get a driver killed and we won't do it again for a few weeks after he is burried.

NASCAR has several rules regarding lug nuts and wheel studs. Thread size/pitch/nut thickness/material and wheel stud length/diameter/thread pitch/material are all dictated in those rules, For Safety Reasons!!!
What these teams were CAUGHT doing was removeing some of the threads from the inner side of the wheel nuts. This allowed the nut to go further onto the wheel stud before engageing the studs threads ( and made them appear Legal from a outside veiw ) ---as Honcho and BigE said it allows the nuts to be tightened faster and removed faster, may not sound like much but there are 20 nuts that need to removed in a 4 tire stop and 20 more that need to tightened so it adds up.
Its so much easier to pass another car on pit road than it is to pass a car on the track ALL teams are looking for every and any advantage they can get on pit road, some dont care if its legal Our are willing to pay the fine to get the advantage.

Thanks for all you guys answering my question. Still it seems like a bonehead move to make for the safety of the drivers. I can't stand cheatin! Win fair and square! How can you say in your heart that you've won, when you cheated?? Some team I guess are just that desperate and don't care about what is right and wrong. That happens a lot in our society and it is a shame!!

That would be the #1 reason I don't care for HMS!!
