The violations were found during opening day inspection on July 5. Gordon has been penalized 25 championship driver and 25 championship owner points. Crew chief Gene Nead has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.(NASCAR PR)(7-13-2007)

Smile Robby Gordon Motorsports To Field Marcos Ambrose In Nextel Cup Debut

Wasserman Media Group, LLC., For Robby Gordon Motorsports, Press Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 7, 2007) – Robby Gordon Motorsports will field Australian Marcos Ambrose in the Busch Series rookie’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series debut at Watkins Glen this weekend.

After one of the most controversial incidents in NASCAR’s recent history last weekend, Ambrose has accepted a “peace offering” from Gordon to drive the No. 77 Camping World Ford Fusion, which will also carry some signage from Ambrose’s regular sponsor Kingsford Charcoal.

Ambrose led 37 laps, more than any other driver in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 in Montreal last weekend and was on course to record his first NASCAR Busch Series win when he was turned around by Gordon while leading at the second corner at a restart with two laps remaining.

As a penalty, Gordon was eliminated from the following day’s NEXTEL Cup race, and while he strongly disagreed with the calls during the Busch race, he has accepted NASCAR’s decision and wants to put the incident behind him.

Ambrose will continue his NASCAR Busch campaign on Saturday in the No. 59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, but will now do “double duty” in the Robby Gordon Motorsports entry.

Gordon will drive the No. 55 Verizon Wireless Ford Fusion in the Busch race and the No. 7 Jim Beam Ford Fusion in the NEXTEL Cup Series race.

The Sunday event will be a joint effort between Robby Gordon Motorsports and Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, with Ambrose’s regular Kingsford crew doing the pit work and his new Crew Chief Ernie Cope calling the shots from the box on Sunday.

Ambrose was originally scheduled to make his NEXTEL Cup debut in a Wood Brothers/JTG Racing entry this weekend, but several circumstances meant the team had to put their plans on hold.

Ambrose is considered somewhat of a road racing specialist who won two Australian V8 Supercar Championships on road courses for Ford before turning his attention to NASCAR at the beginning of last year.

He started his career in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, has progressed to the NASCAR Busch Series this season and now gets his chance to make his debut in North America’s highest level of competition, NASCAR’s NEXTEL Cup Series.

He currently sits eighth in the NASCAR Busch Series points and second in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.

WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY…..

ROBBY GORDON:

“There are a couple of reasons why I’m doing this,” said Gordon.
“The first reason is that it’s unfortunate that Marcos got put in a position in Montreal where I was thinking, ‘OK, if I’m not going to win, he’s not going to win.’

“At the same time, I think he’s a talented race-car driver, and obviously he has the ability to compete at the highest level. He showed that last weekend in the Busch race, and I felt that this opportunity would be a make-up.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get to finish the race the way either one of us wanted to finish it last weekend, and now we’ve got an opportunity to try to put on a good show again this weekend at Watkins Glen.

“He will be driving a brand new, purpose-built road racing car in the Camping World colors with a bit of Kingsford branding thrown in for good measure.

“As a team owner, I’m excited about giving him this opportunity. I look forward to running two cars this weekend, I look forward to getting them in the show, and at the end of the day, I hope it comes down to the two of us to win the race.”

MARCOS AMBROSE:

“Well, they say that America is the land of opportunity, and I guess this is proof of that,” said Ambrose.
“A bit of old outback Australian culture involved playing a game of Australian football, having a fight and then heading to the pub together for a beer – I guess this is a bit like that.

“This is part apology and part compliment on Robby’s behalf. I believe we can have a solid run this weekend and give Ford, Camping World and the rest of Robby Gordon Motorsports’ sponsors a good return on their investment.

“In some respects this is a no-lose situation for me because I get to break into NEXTEL Cup without the regular burden of things like owner and championship points.

“Obviously, this indicates there is no animosity between us, and we will both be out there looking for the best result possible in our Fords.”

Smile Robby Gordon to Drive The #22 In The Camping World 300

Veteran driver Robby Gordon has accepted the invitation extended by team owner Armando Fitz to drive the #22 for Supercuts in the Camping World 300 this weekend at the California Speedway.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Robby in the past, and knowing that he is a talented driver, I am eager to see what he can do for Supercuts and our team,” Armando Fitz stated. “We are glad it worked out so that both teams will be benefiting from the arrangement.”

Fitz Motorsports, who remains in the top-10 in owner points, is looking forward to having the southern California native behind the wheel this weekend. The hometown hero Robby Gordon is also glad to be able to give his fans two nights of racing action.

Gordon stated, “I'm excited about the opportunity to run in California, it’s actually my home race track. It will help out not only Fitz Motorsports, but Robby Gordon Motorsports as well due to the fact that we’re going to get to learn about the tires during Saturday’s race which we can apply to Sunday’s race. Armando and I have been friends for a long time- I drove for his father-in-law ten years ago and it’s kind of cool to come back and drive again- it should be fun.”

Crew Chief Paul Wolfe, who has had the opportunity to work with five other drivers this season, is eager to have Gordon’s skills on the track this weekend.

Wolfe stated, “It should be an exciting race this weekend in California with Robby in our Supercuts car. He has a great deal of experience and a fearlessness that might be just what our car needs. We ran well at California in the spring, and we are taking the car that ran in the top-10 in Michigan, so I think as far as the equipment goes we should be good to go. Just looking forward to seeing what Robby can do with it.”

I can't wait to see which race Marcos will race since he didn't get a chance to race at The Glen.

Thumbs up Gordon Gets New Crew Chief

RacingOne Report

Robby Gordon Motorsports officially named Peter Sospenzo as the crew chief for the No. 7 Ford Fusion.

Historically with multicar teams such as Penske, Hendrick Motorsports and Ginn Racing, Sospenzo brings renewed optimism to NEXTEL Cup's only single car owner/driver combination.

"This is the most unique opportunity in the garage," Sospenzo said. "First we have one of the most talented drivers in any form of motorsports behind the wheel in Robby Gordon. He drives the wheels off everything he gets into and drivers in the garage respect him. They don't run all over him because they know what a fierce competitor he is. Robby has also done a remarkable job with this team. You can chart the progress over the past three years and can clearly tell which direction RGM is headed. The race cars are very well built and with the expanded facility and strong backing from sponsors we're looking forward to getting this team into the top twenty by the end of the year - and then coming out strong in 2008 at Daytona."

When Sospenzo became available after the Dale Earnhardt Incorporated merger with Ginn Racing, the choice for Gordon became clear.

"This is an extremely tough business and Peter Sospenzo brings a strong racing background to RGM. He is the first crew chief hired by our organization that has taken a car to victory lane in the Cup Series. He has won races with other drivers in Nextel Cup and we look forward to having a guy with his experience on our team."
