He has had a pretty bad year mrsmopar. I'm with you, waiting for this year to be over! Just look at it this way, in about 5 months Ryan will have a fresh start! Hopefully it will be a good one for him.
Even pit stops are a special challenge at the circuit's shortest track.,
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2006) – Martinsville Speedway is by far the shortest of the short tracks. At slightly more than a half mile, it’s a wonder 43 cars can simultaneously drive one lap around the paperclip-shaped track…much less 500 laps…but that’s why short tracks are so popular with the fans; they create plenty of action with one small bobble possibly taking out a quarter of the field.
Just like at restrictor-place races, the cars are all bunched together. At Talladega and Daytona, the drivers have to stay together in order to have a good day. At Martinsville, the drivers have to stay together because there’s no other place to go.
Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, will make his 10th NASCAR Cup Series start at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday and his 184th start in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Qualifying has never been a problem for Newman at any of the short tracks. In fact, in both the Cup and Busch series’ at tracks one mile in length or less, Newman has earned 15 poles, 44 top-10 starts and 34 top-five qualifying runs in 54 races.
In nine races at the 0.526-mile oval, Newman has never started outside the top 10. His lowest start has been 10th, which occurred during his first career start at the track in April 2002. Since then, Newman has had only one other start outside the top five, an eighth in October 2003. His other seven starts included two poles, a second, two third-place starts and consecutive starts from the fourth position in the past two races. Newman’s average starting spot is 4.0, the best among all active drivers.
Newman knows how to wheel his car around the “paperclip” and stay out of the incidents that will inevitably occur during each event. He has had only two finishes outside the top 20 – a 38th and a 41st – and another two outside the top 10 – 18th and 15th. The 18th-place finish occurred during this year’s Virginia 500 in April. Newman’s five other finishes include five top-10s and four top fives. His average finish at the Virginia track is 15.44.
Half of Newman’s 12 career wins have come at the short tracks, along with 29 top-10 finishes and 18 top fives.
Newman has led four races at Martinsville Speedway for a total of 83 laps. He has completed 4,190 laps of a possible 4,500, giving Newman a 93.1 percent completion rate.
Although the No. 12 Alltel team hasn’t had the season it had been hoping for, it has always looked forward to the short track races for the mere fact that Newman performs so well on them.
“Even though we’ve struggled on the intermediate tracks this year, we’ve done well on the short tracks. We always seem to have a good run on the short tracks, so I’m happy that we get one more shot at a short track this season,” Newman said. “With only five races left, we’d really like to have a good top-five finish and earn a win for our team and our sponsors before the season is over.”
Crew chief Matt Borland and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team will take chassis PRS-69 to this weekend’s Subway 500 at Martinsville. The car had two top-10 finishes last year and was used as a back-up car at Richmond in May and Loudon in July. Borland and the Alltel team took this car to both Martinsville races in 2005. In April, Newman had a flat tire at the race's beginning and lost a few laps, but he was able to drive the car back to the front and finish fourth. In October, the car finished 10th at Martinsville. The team also tested this car at Richmond International Raceway earlier this year.
The backup car for Martinsville is chassis PRS-91. This car was run at the last two spring Richmond races. In May 2005, Newman finished third after qualifying second and in May of this year, Newman placed eighth after starting 14th.
The Subway 500 will be broadcast live on NBC and MRN Radio beginning at 12:30 p.m., ET.

From Press Release
October 19, 2006
09:08 AM EDT (13:08 GMT)
TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Ryan Newman's beer battered fried catfish recipe was chosen as the winner in the NASCAR Catfish Cookoff, earning the Ryan Newman Foundation a $10,000 donation.
A panel of judges which included NASCAR President Mike Helton chose Newman's recipe over Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s baked catfish stuffed with gumbo.
Newman's fried catfish with its unique beer batter was a unanimous choice among the judges. Earnhardt's dish, which is served in the trophy room at Dale Earnhardt Incorporated headquarters, also received praise from the judges.
Catfish fillets were stuffed with a unique gumbo and served over grits. The two recipes were judged on the basis of taste, visual appeal, ease of preparation and use of catfish.
The contest was sponsored by the Catfish Institute, a non-profit organization comprised of growers and processors of U.S. farm-raised catfish, to build awareness for America's leading farmed fish.
"Catfish is the favorite fish of NASCAR fans," said Roger Barlow, President of the Catfish Institute. "U.S. farm-raised catfish is an all-American product and a healthful, safe choice; consumers have the satisfaction of knowing that it is farmed in an environmentally responsible way."

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 22, 2006) - For Ryan Newman, Sunday was a day filled with red-hot rotors and jam-packed pit stalls at the 0.546-mile Martinsville Speedway.
Newman started Sunday's Subway 500 from the fourth position, three spots behind teammate Kurt Busch, who had earned his sixth Bud Pole award of the year on Friday.
Newman's car was good at the beginning; just a little loose, but the car became tighter as the run progressed. Crew chief Matt Borland reminded Newman to take it easy on his brakes, as they were already looking red on lap 36.
Newman maintained a top-10 position until lap 65 when Casey Mears took Newman's position by bumping the Alltel Dodge Charger out of his way. They rubbed sheet metal as they raced side-by-side before Mears pulled ahead of Newman. Then, as soon as Newman tagged the rear bumper of Mears' No. 42 Dodge Charger, Mears' car spun, bringing out the caution on lap 65.
"I was only giving back to him what he was doing to me," Newman told his crew. "Make sure NASCAR knows that."
However, Mears' crew chief saw it differently and argued with officials for a penalty, which was assessed Newman -- tail end of the longest line for unnecessary roughness. Mears also received a warning from NASCAR. The penalty caused Newman to restart in the 30th position on lap 73.
Adjustments during the first pit stop on lap 67 did little to help Newman's balance issues with the car. Borland had called for one round of wedge out of the left rear and two rounds in the track bar, but after the restart, Newman's Dodge was still tight.
On lap 92, J.J. Yeley cut a tire and spun across the track, but NASCAR didn't throw the yellow flag and three laps later Newman went a lap down.
The car remained tight and was getting worse as the run progressed - the longest run of the 500-lap race - and Newman began falling further back. By the time the caution did come out again on lap 155 for a spin by David Stremme, Newman was out of position for the "Lucky Dog" award.
Newman came in for his second stop on lap 159 to free up the car. Borland had the Alltel crew take one round of wedge out of the left rear and put three rounds of wedge into the right rear along with four tires and fuel. The stop took Newman from 25th to 29th on the track. After the restart on lap 162, the car began in a loose condition but went to the tight side again, especially in the center of the corners.
A third stop on lap 206 helped the tight condition when the Alltel crew removed two rounds of wedge from the left rear, but then Newman started complaining about the car being loose in the center of the turns.
On lap 222, Ward Burton's car hit the wall, bringing out the fifth of 18 caution flags. Newman told his crew the car was good; there had been a slight chatter in the tires at the start of the run, but it had gone away and the car didn't need any changes.
The field took the green flag on lap 228 and almost immediately, the yellow waved again for a multi-car wreck on lap 232. This time, though, Newman was the Lucky Dog after fighting leader Jimmie Johnson at the front of the field and returned to the lead lap.
Newman restarted the Subway 500 in the 23rd position on lap 239. Again, the car was heading toward the loose side and his car's brakes were starting to get hot again no matter how easy he was on them. However, Newman was still able to pick up quite a few spots during the next caution period when he stayed out and five cars in front of him pitted. Newman returned to the top 20 when he went from 22nd to 17th. He remained in the top 20 until lap 284 when he pitted for the fifth time to make changes on the car.
For the remainder of the race, Newman battled problems with his car's brakes. Short tracks are known for wearing out the brakes on race cars and Martinsville is one of the worst because of its paperclip shape.
It would be a back-and-forth struggle for Newman as he would make it back into the top 20 on lap 335 because of a pit strategy different from those at the front of the pack, but as soon as he had to pit, he'd again be outside the top 20.
On lap 359, Newman was informed that a piece of the car's skirt was hanging near the exhaust pipe, but after a closer look, the metal had been folded upwards and was not blocking the pipes. The metal didn't cause any problems for Newman or the Alltel Dodge Charger. Newman made it up to 11th and was pushing toward the top 10, but when Borland brought Newman in to cut off the piece of metal, Newman dropped to 24th.
On lap 433, Newman informed his crew that the brakes were starting to go, but again, he was able to pick up positions as more and more cars were involved in accidents. Newman ran in the top 20 for the rest of Sunday's race. He drove through the field as hard as he possibly could while trying to make sure the car's brakes did not fail with less than 75 laps left in the race.
After a late-race accident involving Dale Earnhardt Jr., Newman was running in the 13th position and battling with Carl Edwards. The two flip-flopped positions for the remainder of the race, but in the end, Edwards won out and Newman finished 13th, his seventh top-15 finish at the Virginia short track in 10 races.
Next week, Newman and the No. 12 Alltel team return to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Bass Pro Shops 500. NBC and PRN Radio will broadcast the race live beginning at 2:30 p.m., ET.

CECIL, Ga. (Oct. 25, 2006) – Ryan Newman returned to his open-wheel roots Wednesday night and emerged victorious in the South Georgia Motorsports Park 100.
“We had a great car tonight,” Newman said after the race. “The car was really fast and it was a great track to drive at. I had some problems with passing in the beginning, but I knew that would work to my advantage once I got out front.
“I had a lot of fun tonight at South Georgia Motorsports Park. They’ve got a nice facility here and it was really fun to come out and just compete for fun. I am really looking forward to racing in more of the open-wheel races in the future.”
The event, part of the Premier Racing Association’s Silver Crown series, featured Silver Crown “Big Cars” and NASCAR stars Ken Schrader, Dave Blaney and Newman.
SGMP, just 2 years old, is located north of Valdosta, Ga., and is better known for its dragstrip rather than its half-mile oval. However, with nearly 4,000 spectators Wednesday night, that may be changing.
Newman, driving the No. 192 car, qualified second earlier in the day with a time of 17.169 seconds, just behind series point leader Chet Fillip. However, the PRA’s Silver Crown series mixes things up a bit by inverting the top six. The qualifiers must draw for their spot after qualifying and after the selection, Newman moved back one spot to third, while Fillip was relegated to sixth. Marc Jessup began up front.
After a brief autograph session with all of the drivers, the 100-lap race began with Newman quickly moving into second in the race’s opening laps. Jessup, however, wasn’t going to be an easy mark for Newman as the Indiana native attempted to take over the lead. At one point, after just 19 laps, Newman had passed Jessup, but a caution occurred behind them and since Newman hadn’t passed the start/finish line in the lead before the yellow flag waved, he had to restart in second.
Fillip started to pressure Newman in the middle of the race, but after 60 laps, his car began fading and it was just Newman and Jessup up front.
Following a lap-71 restart, Newman battled Jessup for the lead lap after lap, finally succeeding in his quest by lap 75. Newman then pulled away from Jessup and the rest of the field.
However, another caution flag waved on lap 78 and once the field had completed 80 laps, the series’ rules dictate that caution laps no longer count.
When Newman received the green flag on lap 80, he jumped out to a tremendous lead. By this time, Jessup had fallen out of the top five and A.J. Fike had emerged as Newman’s closest competitor. Fike, however, was unable to catch the No. 192 car in the remaining 20 laps and Newman went on to victory lane for the first time in 2006. Fike was second, while Fillip finished third.

Newman Optimistic Of A Cup Win In Last Two Races Of Season
Penske Racing South, Press Release
NNCS Notes:
Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, will make his ninth NASCAR Cup Series start at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday and his 187th in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Newman has had three straight Bud Pole Awards at PIR – 2002, 2003 and 2004 – and is tied with former teammate Rusty Wallace for earning the most poles at the one-mile track. Newman has never started outside the top 25 and has earned two other top-10 starts, including a 10th in his first-career Cup race, which occurred at PIR in 2000, and a seventh during the first spring race held at the track in 2005. Newman’s average start at Phoenix is 8.625.
In eight Phoenix races, Newman has earned just two top-five finishes – a second in 2004 and a third in 2003. His other finishes have all come outside the top 10. Newman has had three DNFs at PIR, all results of accidents, and in each of those three races, Newman has finished 39th or lower. His average finish at PIR is 21.125.
Newman has led three races at the Arizona track for a total of 114 laps. He has completed 2,212 laps out of a possible 2,499 for a completion rate of 88.5 percent.
The Alltel team will take chassis PRS-55 to this weekend’s Checker Auto Parts 500. This is the same car that Newman drove in both races at New Hampshire International Speedway and also to victory in September 2005 at NHIS. The car has been rebuilt a couple of times since then, however. Last November, the team took the same chassis to Phoenix where Newman was involved in a wreck during practice. The car was taken back to Phoenix in April 2006 and was involved in a wreck during the race.
The backup car for PIR is chassis PRS-91. This car was run at the last two spring Richmond races. In May 2005, Newman finished third after qualifying second and in May of this year, Newman finished eighth after he started from the 14th position.
Newman on Phoenix International Raceway:
“Phoenix has not been the kindest track to us in the past. I really like driving there because it’s a short track and I always enjoy driving at the short tracks, but we’ve had some tough runs there.”
“We’re going into PIR knowing that we only have two races left in the season, which is a little bit of a relief after the season we’ve had, but we also know that we’ve got two more races to try and win and I think we have a good shot at accomplishing that before this season ends.”
Quick Stats:
Phoenix International Raceway: 8
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/114
Best Start: 1 (three times)
Best Finish: 2 (Nov. 2004)
November 2005 Start: 11
November 2005 Finish: 12

Newman Hopes To Emerge The Hero In Last Western Shootout
Six years ago Ryan Newman made his NASCAR Cup debut at Phoenix International Raceway.,
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 7, 2006) – It’s another long weekend for NASCAR, as the series heads back to the West for the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Making one last stop in the western states for the 2006 season, Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, will make his ninth start at PIR and his 187th in the Cup Series.
Even though Newman has yet to win at the one-mile track in Avondale, Ariz., the desert facility is still special to the 28-year-old Newman. It’s the site of his first-career Cup start in November 2000. Newman’s first Cup qualifying run resulted in a top-10 start, but the race didn’t go quite as well. A brake issue sidelined the team for numerous laps as it attempted to solve the problem, but it was an overheated engine that occurred after a windshield tear-off got stuck, sticky side down, on the grill that finally eliminated Newman from the event after 176 laps.
However, Newman’s first Cup qualifying attempt at PIR set the tone for the future. Newman leads all active drivers at PIR with three Bud Pole Awards and he’s tied with former teammate Rusty Wallace for the all-time lead.
Newman’s three Bud Pole Awards were earned consecutively, 2002-2004. Newman has never started outside the top 25 and has earned two other top-10 starts, including the 10th in 2000, and a seventh during the first spring race held at the track in 2005. Newman’s average start at Phoenix is 8.625.
However, Newman hasn’t obtained the same results during the race.
In eight races at the track, Newman has earned just two top-five finishes – a second in 2004 and a third in 2003. His other finishes have all come outside the top 10. Newman has recorded three DNFs at PIR and in each of those three races, Newman has finished 39th or lower. His average finish at PIR is 21.125.
“Phoenix has not been the kindest track to us in the past,” Newman said. “I really like driving there because it’s a short track and I always enjoy driving at the short tracks, but we’ve had some tough runs there.”

AVONDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 12, 2006) - It was a rough start for Ryan Newman and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team, but Sunday's Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway ended much better than it began.
After qualifying seventh on Friday, Newman spent 51 laps in the top 10 in the race's early stages. However, a problem then began developing for Newman. By lap 16, the car was tightening up and it kept getting worst as the race wore on.
Crew chief Mike Nelson and Newman discussed options for their first pit stop, but the initial caution period didn't occur until lap 71, after Newman had dropped out of the top 10 and was running in the 24th position.
"The car won't even turn getting into turn one," Newman told Nelson. "We've got to get this car freer."
For the first stop, Nelson called for one-and-a-half rounds of wedge in the right rear, one-and-a-half rounds of wedge out of the left rear, one pound of air pressure out of the left-side tires, four tires and fuel.
The car was OK for a short while after the pit stop, but it was still tight and became tighter as the run went on. Nelson and Newman discussed making a track bar adjustment on the second stop, but again, it would be 80 laps before another caution flag waved.
"The balance is pretty good in clean air," Newman said. "Once I get in traffic, though, the car gets tight."
On the second pit stop at lap 152, the Alltel team put one-and-a-half rounds of wedge into the right rear along with four tires and fuel. Newman was still running just outside the top 20, but finally made it back up to the 20th position on lap 164.
For the next 103 laps, Newman remained in the top 20 even though the car's tight condition was worse than it had been all day.
When Michael Waltrip's car had problems on lap 187, Newman was able to pit for more adjustments. This time, the crew took a half round of wedge out of the left rear and went up one round on the right-side track bar. After the stop, Nelson informed Newman that he could make it through the rest of the race with just one more stop.
On lap 207, Newman had some good news for his crew.
"The balance is OK," he said. "We just need to get some track position."
Newman made it into the top 15 on lap 235, but quickly fell back in the field. The adjustments made on the third stop had loosened the car too much. He had fallen back to 20th on lap 252, but was saved from dropping through the field even further when another caution came out on lap 253.
Newman returned to his pit stall for one round of wedge in the left rear and one round up on the right-side track bar. Nelson also called for four tires, but no fuel. He was trying to get some position for Newman on pit road that would carry over to the track. It helped a bit as Newman picked up two spots in the pits.
Unfortunately, the car was still too loose. The adjustments hadn't done much to help the car and Newman told his crew that his rear tires were chattering. On lap 267, Newman fell out of the top 20.
Things got a little worse for Newman on lap 273 when he was spun by David Gilliland during a multi-car accident heading into turn one. Luckily, Newman didn't hit anything, but he had minor damage to the car's left-rear quarter panel and he needed new tires.
When the green flag waved on lap 282, Newman was in the 23rd position, but it didn't take long for him to advance. By lap 297, he was running 16th.
The final 15 laps proved to take longer than most. On lap 299, Jeff Green's car spun in turn one. When the caution period ended on lap 305, it took only one lap for the yellow flag to wave again when Casey Mears spun in turn two. Clint Bowyer also lost an engine on lap 305 and dropped a trail of oil around the track. After three yellow-flag laps, NASCAR threw the red flag, which lasted for 8 minutes 58 seconds.
On the lap 310 restart, Newman was in 14th position. He held off Tony Stewart for one lap before he succumbed to the No. 20 car, but Newman was still able to hold on to the 15th position.
"That was a decent finish," Newman said. "We kept the fenders on it. I wish we could have done better, but getting spun out in that accident hurt us a little bit track position wise. I wish we could have come back up. It's nice to have tires at the end, but it just wasn't enough."
Next weekend, Newman and the Alltel Dodge crew head to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the 2006 season finale. Race coverage begins at 2 p.m., EST, and will be broadcast live on NBC and MRN Radio.

Homestead Provides Newman With One Final Chance For A Victory In 2006
The 2006 season has been Ryan Newman's most frustrating since he joined NASCAR's Cup circuit fulltime in 2002.,
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 14, 2006) – It has been a tough season for Ryan Newman and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team. In 35 races, Newman has earned only two Bud Pole Awards, seven top-10 and two top-five finishes. While he only has three DNFs in the 2006 season, he has only finished on the lead lap 18 times.
This weekend, Newman makes his final start of the 2006 season in the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and it’s his last chance for a NASCAR Cup victory this year. It’s Newman’s fifth NASCAR Cup Series start at Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday and his 188th in the series, but he still hasn’t visited victory lane in a Cup race at the South Florida track.
Although he has never earned a pole at the 1.5-mile speedway, he has had some pretty good qualifying runs at the Homestead track, including three consecutive top-five starts. Newman’s first start at the speedway in 2002 – his rookie season in NASCAR’s premier series -- came from the 15th position, but since then, Newman has started fourth (2003), third (2004) and second (2005). Newman’s average start at the track is 6.
Even though Newman’s starts at Homestead have been good, he has experienced two DNFs at the track; one came with only seven laps remaining in 2004 when an accident on lap 264 removed Newman from contention. In four races, he has two top-10 finishes and two from the 30th position or lower with his finishes of 37th and 30th coming after accidents. Newman’s average finish at Homestead is 20.
Still, there has only been one Homestead race where Newman did not lead a lap – 2003 – as an accident on lap 122 stymied Newman’s chances for a good finish. Newman has led three of the four races for a total of 133 laps. He has completed 920 laps of a possible 1,072 for an 85.8 completion rate.
With Sunday being the season finale, it’s the last chance for Newman and the No. 12 team to visit Victory Lane this year, and their intensity will be the same as it was at the first of the year in an effort to make sure that’s where they end up after 267 laps.
“It’s been a tough year for this team and I think we’re all ready to see it come to an end and start working on 2007,” Newman said. “This is our final chance to earn a win and we’ll all go out there and give it everything we can.”
The Alltel team is taking chassis PRS-048 to this weekend’s Ford 400. This car was last driven in Texas for the Dickies 500. Newman qualified 24th and finished 34th. This car was also driven in Kansas and California where Newman qualified 15th and 12th, respectively. Before that, this car was driven at Michigan International Speedway in the GFS Marketplace 400. Newman started fourth, but finished 25th after dealing with a variety of problems during the race. This car was also tested at Kentucky this year, but before that, it had not been on a track since the 2003 season. In September 2003, Newman drove the car at Loudon where he started on the pole and finished ninth. In November of that year, he started on the pole at Phoenix and finished third.
The backup car for Homestead is chassis PRS-076. This car was last run at Charlotte five weeks ago. After a rear-end housing cracked, Newman finished 27th. At Chicagoland in July, Newman started 12th and ended up 36th. Before that, Newman drove the car three previous times this season; most recently at Michigan. Newman used this same chassis at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600 where he finished 35th after starting 18th, and at Darlington in May where he placed sixth after starting second. Newman also tested this car at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 3. Last year, Newman raced this car at Chicagoland Speedway. Prior to the 2005 Chicago race, the car was used in May at Darlington and at Charlotte, and in June at Michigan. The car qualified on the front row in each of the four 2005 races, winning two poles - one at Charlotte and the other at Michigan.
The Ford 400 will be broadcast live on NBC and MRN Radio beginning at 2 p.m., EST.
