Wink Previews of this weeks race

Auto Club 500 Preview Notes

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, will make his ninth NASCAR Cup Series start at California Speedway on Sunday and his 190th in the NASCAR Cup Series.

In Newman’s first-ever start at the 2-mile Southern California track, he sat on the pole in April 2002. Since then, Newman has earned a 10.75 starting average with three top-10s and a top-five, which came in 2003 when Newman started fourth. Three of Newman’s four other starts at California have been from the top-15. His worst start came from the 28th position in September 2005.

May 2004 brought Newman his best finish at the Fontana, Calif., track -- a third place. Newman has earned three top-10s, including two top-five finishes. His other top five came in September 2004 when he finished fifth. Overall, Newman has an average finish of 18.

Newman has led three races at California Speedway for a total of seven laps. He has completed 1,788 laps of a possible 2,005, giving Newman a completion rate of 89.1 percent.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger team will take chassis PRS-104 to this weekend’s Auto Club 500 at California Speedway. This car was tested last year at Kentucky and was taken as the back-up car to Fontana in February, Las Vegas and Texas in April, but the car has never been on the track during a race.

The backup car for California is chassis PRS-71. This car was tested at Indianapolis and Charlotte last year, but never saw any action during race time.

Newman on California Speedway: “We struggled a lot last year at the intermediate tracks and we spent a good part of the off-season focusing on improving that part of our program. We didn’t have a great test at Las Vegas a few weeks ago, but we’re looking forward to getting to California and seeing if all the testing we’ve been doing since Homestead will pay off. I think we’re going to have a good car this weekend and we’re all anxious to get back to the intermediate tracks to see what we’ve improved on and what we still need to work on.”

Quick Stats:
California Speedway Starts: 8
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/7
Best Starting Position: 1 (2002)
Best Finishing Position: 3 (May 2004)
February 2006 Start: 11
February 2006 Finish: 20

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his seventh Cup start at the newly-repaved and renovated Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It will be Newman’s 191st start in the Cup Series.

Newman has an average start of 9.5 at LVMS, which includes one Bud Pole Award in March 2005. Three more of Newman’s starts at the intermediate track were from top-five starting positions. His worst finish came in March 2001 during Newman’s first race at the track when he qualified 35th.

Three of Newman’s six starts at Las Vegas have ended in top-10 finishes, including a career-best fourth in March 2002. The other three starts have seen Newman finish 27th or lower, including a 43rd in last year’s race after being involved in an accident that removed the Alltel Dodge from competition after only 88 laps.

Newman has led three races for a total of 97 laps. He has completed 1,421 laps of a possible 1,605, giving Newman an 88.5 percent completion rate.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team will take chassis PRS-71 to this weekend’s UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This car was tested at Indianapolis and Charlotte in 2006, but it never saw any race action.

The backup car for Las Vegas will be chassis PRS-104. This was the car Newman drove two weeks ago in the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway. He qualified the car 19th and finished 12th. This car was also tested last year at Kentucky and was taken as the backup car to Fontana in February, Las Vegas and Texas in April.

Newman on Las Vegas Motor Speedway: “Our team didn’t have a great test out here in January, but we had a great run at California Speedway two weeks ago, which is set up a lot like Vegas. This team has come a long way from how we ran on intermediate tracks last year. We’ve got a lot of races coming up on these types of tracks and I think we’re all anxious to get back on track and see if we’ll keep our momentum going from California or if there’s still some work we need to do. We had some problems with turn one during the pre-season test, so we’ll have to make some adjustments to the car to make sure we don’t have those same problems during the race.”

Quick Stats
Las Vegas Motor Speedway: 6
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/97
Best Starting Position: 1 (March 2005)
Best Finishing Position: 4 (March 2002)
March 2006 Start: 11
March 2006 Finish: 43

Smile Newman Happy with Car Going into UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400

Friday, March 9, 2007
9:14 PM

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, may not be starting up front for Sunday’s UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400, but he’s happy with the way his car is progressing as preparations continue for the 267-lap race.

“We were really loose during practice and we made some changes to the car before qualifying and got it feeling much better,” Newman said after posting the 39th-fastest lap during Friday's time trials. “I wasn’t expecting to be up in the top 10. I’m more concerned with getting the changes made to this car to make it better for Sunday. We can make our way to the front, but if we don’t make a car good enough to go to the front, than even strategy won’t help us.”

Newman’s lap of 30.131 seconds was almost a second of off pole sitter Kasey Kahne’s time of 29.212 seconds.

“The car felt much better during qualifying even though our position doesn’t show it,” Newman continued. “We’ve got two more practices tomorrow to tweak the car and we’ll be using every minute of it to keep improving the balance. The guys are working real hard in the garage and I’m sure this car will feel even better when the green flag drops on Sunday afternoon.”

The UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 will air live on Fox and PRN Radio beginning at 4:30 p.m., EDT.

Line-up for UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400:

1. Kasey Kahne, No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge
2. David Stremme, No. 40 Coors Light Dodge
3. Elliott Sadler, No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge
4. Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge
5. Jeff Burton, No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet
10. Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge
39. Ryan Newman, No. 12 Alltel Dodge

Thumbs up Kobalt Tools 500 Preview

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his 11th Cup start at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It will be Newman’s 192nd start in the Cup Series.

Newman has an average start of 3.3 at AMS, including six consecutive Bud Pole Awards from March 2003 through October 2005. Newman has three other top-10 starts at the track and a 17th, which occurred in October 2006.

Only four of Newman’s 10 previous starts resulted in top-10 finishes and his best finish was a fifth in March 2004. Last year, Newman finished 18th in March and 30th in October. His average finish at the intermediate track is 16.6.

Newman has led nine races for a total of 159 laps. He has completed 3,159 laps of a possible 3,173, giving Newman a 99.6 percent completion rate. He has finished all but one race at AMS. He was 29th in October 2003 after an accident eliminated him from the race with only five laps remaining.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team will take chassis PRS-71 to this weekend’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This is the same car that he drove to an eighth-place finish last weekend at Las Vegas. It was tested at Indianapolis and Charlotte in 2006.

The backup car for Atlanta is chassis PRS-104. This was the car Newman drove three weeks ago in the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway. He qualified the car 19th and finished 12th. This car was also tested last year at Kentucky and was taken as the backup car in 2006 to Fontana in February, Las Vegas and Texas in April.

Newman on Atlanta Motor Speedway: “Our intermediate program has improved so much since 2006 and it has shown in a big way over these last two races. I’ve had cars that may not have been so great in practice or qualifying, but once we got to the race, the cars were good. The top-10 finish at Las Vegas last week was a huge boost for this team. We’re taking the same car to Atlanta and we’re going to tweak it a little bit more to get it as close to perfect as we can, but we know going into this weekend’s race that we have a top-10 car and we hope we can make it a top-one car and get it into Victory Lane.

Quick Stats:
Atlanta Motor Speedway: 10
Races Led/Laps Led: 9/159
Best Starting Position: 1 (Six times)
Best Finishing Position: 5 (March 2004)
March 2006 Start: 2
March 2006 Finish: 18

Wink Food City 500 Preview

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his 11th Cup start at Bristol Motor Speedway. It will be Newman’s 193rd start in the Cup Series.

Newman has an average start of 7.4 at BMS. Newman has earned two Bud Pole awards at the 0.533-mile track. Newman has six other top-10 starts at the track; his two other starts were a 14th in August 2002 and a 21st in August 2006.

Newman has five top-10 finishes at the Tennessee short track, including a career-best second in August 2004. In 2006, Newman had two top-10 finishes – a ninth in the March race and an eighth last August. Newman’s average finish at Bristol is 19.7.

Newman has led three races for a total of 57 laps. He has completed 4,620 laps of a possible 5,000, giving Newman a 92.4 percent completion rate. He has finished all but one race at BMS; an accident in August 2005 left Newman 39th after only 317 laps.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Avenger team will take chassis PRS-503 to this weekend’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. This Car of Tomorrow was tested at Bristol earlier this month.

The backup car for Bristol is chassis PRS-509. This car is new and has never been on a track.

Newman on Bristol Motor Speedway: “This team has always done well at short tracks and I always look forward to racing at Bristol. Things will be a little different with the new COT cars being used, but I think it will be interesting as well. We’ve tested these cars, but we’ve never seen 43 cars on the track at one time, so I think this is the ultimate test to see how the cars race and how they hold up safety wise. I think all the drivers and teams are just as anxious to see this race take place as the fans are.”

Quick Stats
Bristol Motor Speedway: 10
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/57
Best Starting Position: 1 (Twice)
Best Finishing Position: 2 (August 2004)
March 2006 Start: 6
March 2006 Finish: 9

Thumbs up Ryan Newman Pre-Martinsville NNCS Race Preview

Penske Racing South, Press Release

NNCS Notes (Goody’s Cool Orange 500):

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his 11th Cup start at Martinsville Speedway. It will be Newman’s 194th start in the Cup Series.

Newman has an average start of 4.0 at Martinsville and has never started outside the top 10. Newman has earned two Bud Pole awards at the 0.526-mile track. His lowest start came in his first-career race at Martinsville when he qualified 10th.

Newman has five top-10 finishes at the Virginia short track. His best finish was third in October 2004; he’s had three other finishes inside the top 20. Newman has two finishes that resulted in DNFs – a 38th in April 2003 after a brake failure and a 41st in April 2002 following a radiator malfunction. Newman’s average finish at Martinsville is 15.2.

Newman has led four races for a total of 83 laps. He has completed 4,690 laps of a possible 5,000, giving Newman a 93.8 percent completion rate.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Avenger team will take chassis PRS-511 to this weekend’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway. This Car of Tomorrow has never been on a track.

The backup car for Martinsville is chassis PRS-509. This car was the back-up car for Bristol, but has not seen any action on a track.

Newman on Martinsville Speedway:

“Our debut in the new COT cars didn’t go as well as we had hoped last week in Bristol. Our car was decent in practice, but we didn’t qualify great and we had to make a green-flag stop early on, which put us a lap down.”

“This team is hoping to have better luck this week in Martinsville. We’ve been great in qualifying at this short track and we’ve had a few good finishes there as well. Our best finish is a third and we’d like to improve on that this week.”

Quick Stats:

Martinsville Speedway: 10
Races Led/Laps Led: 4/83
Best Starting Position: 1 (Twice)
Best Finishing Position: 3 (October 2004)
April 2006 Start: 4

Cool Newman Shows His Skill at Martinsville

Friday, March 30, 2007

Ryan Newman's Friday qualifying run in his No. 12 Alltel Dodge Avenger wasn't the one he wanted, but he was able to save his primary car during a spin on his first of two laps.

After taking the green flag, Newman was entering turn one when he spun. Fortunately, Newman saved the car and missed hitting the wall. Newman turned the car around and completed the first lap with a time of 57.100 seconds. On Newman’s second lap, he posted a time of 20.182 seconds, which put him 24th on the grid for Sunday’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

“It was pretty eventful. I had a little too much rear brake in it and got into (turn) one a little bit harder than I should have and turned it around," Newman said when he returned to the garage. "I feel bad for the guys on the Alltel Dodge team. They did a great job in practice and I feel like I let them down a little bit in qualifying.”

"It killed the tires. It killed the speed. It killed a little bit of the mentality. We’ll get it back. We should have been pole material, and I just tried to use too much brake getting in and lost the back of the car getting in and spun it around. We had to regroup to get it back and we got a lap in. That wasn’t a perfect lap, either. It could have been a lot worse, but I’ve wasted the first lap before and won the pole on the second. After being P-5 in practice, I’m a little bit disappointed, but I know we’ve got a good car.”

Newman’s lap was nearly three-tenths slower than pole sitter Denny Hamlin’s time of 19.911 seconds. During the first practice, Newman was fifth fastest with a time of 19.987 seconds.

Sunday's Goody’s Cool Orange 500 will air live on Fox and MRN Radio beginning at 1:30 p.m., EDT.

Line-up for UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400:

1. Denny Hamlin, No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet
2. Jamie McMurray, No. 26 IRWIN Industrial Tools Ford
3. Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet
4. Ken Schrader, No. 21 Little Debbie Ford
5. J.J. Yeley, No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet
12. Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge
24. Ryan Newman, No. 12 Alltel Dodge

Cool Samsung 500 Preview

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his eighth Cup start at Texas Motor Speedway. It will be Newman’s 195th start in the Cup Series.

Newman has an average start of 19 at TMS and won the Bud Pole for both races in 2005. He has one other top-five start at the 1.5-mile track.

Newman has one win at the Fort Worth, Texas, track – his only top-10 finish at TMS – in March 2003. His average finish at Texas is 27.85 with five finishes of 25th or below.

Newman has led three races for a total of 80 laps. He has completed 1,978 laps of a possible 2,343, giving Newman an 84.4 percent completion rate.

Crew chief Mike Nelson and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger team will take chassis PRS-071 to this weekend’s Samsung 500 at TMS. This is the same car Newman drove at Las Vegas and Atlanta earlier this year. Newman earned his first top-10 at Vegas since March 2005 and won the Bud Pole at Atlanta.

The backup car for Texas is chassis PRS-076. This car has not been at the track this year.

Newman on Texas Motor Speedway: “We did really well at the intermediate tracks at the beginning of the season. We had good runs in California and Las Vegas and won the pole in Atlanta. I’m looking forward to getting back in the car at Texas and seeing what else we can do at these (intermediate) tracks. Two years ago, we were able to earn both poles at the Texas races and I think we can do that again. We’ve got the same car from Atlanta and we’ve had time to tweak it and we think it’ll be really good this weekend as well.”

Quick Stats:

Texas Motor Speedway: 7
Races Led/Laps Led: 3/80
Best Starting Position: 1 (Twice)
Best Finishing Position: 1 (March 2003)
April 2006 Start: 14
April 2006 Finish: 40

Wink Subway Fresh Fit 500 Preview

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

The Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday will be Ryan Newman's 10th Cup series start at the 1-mile track in Avondale, Ariz. It is Newman's 196th start in NASCAR's top series.

Newman's average start at PIR is 8.4, while his average finish is 20.4.

In nine races, Newman has three consecutive poles – 2002-2004 – and a career-best, second-place finish in November 2004. Newman has six top-10 starts and two top-five finishes.

Newman has completed 2,524 laps of a possible 2,811, giving him an 89.7 percent completion rate. He has led three races for 114 laps.

Chassis PRS-513 is a new COT car. It was tested earlier this month at Richmond International Raceway. That is the only track time the car has seen.

Chassis PRS-509 is the back-up car for Phoenix. This car has been the backup for both of the two previous COT races, but it was not used. This car was also tested at Richmond.

Ryan Newman on Phoenix: "We've done well in qualifying at Phoenix, but we need to translate that into better finishes. We'll be back to the COT cars in Phoenix and this team has been working hard to figure out this new car and how it works. We haven't had bad runs in this car, but we got caught up in an accident at Bristol and we had the spin during qualifying in Martinsville, so we'll be looking to have better runs in Phoenix this weekend."

Red face Another Early Draw Hinders Newman; Leaves Him 19th

Thursday, April 19, 2007

Another Early Draw Hinders Newman; Leaves Him 19thThu, 04/19/2007 - 10:31pmOnce again, Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge Avenger, drew an early qualifying position -- third out of 50 cars -- and that adversely affected his two-lap run in Thursday's time trials for this weekend's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The quicker of Newman’s two laps put him on the provisional pole with a time of 27.517 seconds, a speed of 130.828 mph, but it was only seven cars later when Dale Earnhardt Jr. knocked Newman from the top spot.

“We put down the two best laps that we had and it was a good run so far, but the track will get better as qualifying goes on, so we won’t be on the pole much longer,” Newman said after climbing from his Alltel Dodge. “If we had gotten a later draw, we probably would be able to start near the front on Saturday night, but there’s too many cars left to go. We’ve got a good car for the race, though. We’ll be all right.”

Saturday night’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 will air live on FOX and MRN Radio beginning at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Line-up for Subway Fresh Fit 500:

1. Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet
2. Jamie McMurray, No. 26 Crown Royal Ford
3. Denny Hamlin, No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet
4. Scott Riggs, No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge
5. Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet
6. Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge
19. Ryan Newman, No. 12 Alltel Dodge
