Scott Wimmer had a solid season last year in the Busch Series, parlaying a part-time schedule into seven top-five and 14 top-10 finishes, as well as a share of the owners championship.
That success didn't lead to a full-time ride, however, so Wimmer is back splitting time with Jeff Burton in Richard Childress Racing's No. 29 Chevrolet in what will be called the Nationwide Series this year. But he clearly would like to run all 35 races for RCR and perhaps challenge for the drivers title.
"I definitely was campaigning for it," Wimmer said. "We were trying to put some things together where I would run 23 races in the 29 car and run the other 12 in another RCR car. We just couldn't get the right situation put together."
Wimmer said there was talk about the possibility of running the early part of the Nationwide Series schedule this year, with an eye on the championship. But that didn't happen either.
"Richard's talking about running that fourth [Sprint] Cup car quite a bit," Wimmer said. "I think he wants to start building a team for that instead of sinking a lot of effort and time into a another Busch Series program."
Wimmer is grateful for having the chance to drive for RCR, which has had one of the best programs in the No. 2 series over the past several years.
"To be teamed up with Jeff Burton and running with him again is huge," Wimmer said. "This last year was the first year I've had a teammate in the six years I've been in NASCAR. It was a big help for me, and hopefully I can learn a lot more from him this year and maybe move into a full-time deal in '09."
